Asking nicely will take you far, PM reminds state leaders
KOTA KINABALU: Harsh words and raised voices will not benefit anyone when making requests from the Federal Government, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that when fighting for state rights or asking for allocations, those who choose to work with Putrajaya and discuss matters calmly can achieve much.
'For example, in the PETRONAS and Petros Sarawak issue, we discussed things properly with Abang Jo (Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg) and came to a solution,' he said at the Sabah-level Kaamatan celebration in Penampang on Friday (May 30).
He said this was also the same on the international stage, where Malaysia aims to be friends with as many nations as possible for mutual benefit.

He said the Federal Government has no intention of stopping any state from acting in its own interests, and has no issue giving Sabah and Sarawak more in terms of revenue, including for oil and gas.
'However, we should discuss it and have close working relations rather than try to win an argument by shouting or cursing here and there," he added.
Earlier, Anwar said the government would always listen to views and requests from states, be it for infrastructure or socio-economic development.
He pointed out that close ties between Sabah and Putrajaya would bring more benefits than difficulties.
'This is not about (the upcoming state) election but about our shared responsibility and to protect our harmony. State-federal relations must be maintained,' he added.

Royal guidance strengthens govt leadership, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describes the wise and just reign of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, as a lasting symbol of the greatness and unity of the country. 'The decrees by His Majesty have consistently served as a noble guide for the Madani government in formulating policies and carrying out its responsibilities, upholding the aspirations of the people and ensuring that the wellbeing of all segments of society is preserved and uplifted,' he said. The Prime Minister said this in a speech at the investiture ceremony where Sultan Ibrahim presented federal awards, stars and medals in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara yesterday, reported Bernama. In congratulating Sultan Ibrahim on the occasion of His Majesty's official birthday, Anwar said he and all the Malaysian people prayed for His Majesty, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, as well as the entire Royal Family, to be blessed with long-lasting health and to always be under the protection and blessings of Allah. The Prime Minister stressed that national unity is no longer an option, but rather a key requirement to ensure the continuity of the country's development. He said unity is the foundation of a country's development and is a catalyst for Malaysia's progress. 'Malaysia will only remain strong if we stand together united. 'Stability and national unity are the basic conditions for all progress. In a world that is rapidly changing and full of challenges, unity is not an option, it is a necessity,' he said. Anwar said the Federal Government, under the auspices and guidance of His Majesty, will continue to be committed to implementing a comprehensive reform agenda based on the Madani principles. Anwar also said Malaysia will remain steadfast in facing various global challenges and continue to play a role as the catalyst and leader of regional diplomacy through its Asean 2025 chairmanship. He said although the world is facing various challenges, including geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, Malaysia remains firmly anchored. 'Malaysia is among the earliest countries to act in protecting the interests of industry and businesses and the welfare of the people. 'Comprehensive and inclusive strategic measures have been taken, with the involvement of various parties to ensure the country remains economically stable and competitive,' he said. The Prime Minister also described this year's Asean Summit as the best in the history of Asean, when Malaysia as chairman brought together three giants – namely the Gulf States or Gulf Cooperation Council, China and Asean – to ensure the survival of civilisation while spurring the economy of the people and country.

More tamu desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the MADANI Government, through KUSKOP, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement today. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added.

Three MPs seek to join proceedings involving Anwar as observers
KUALA LUMPUR: Three members of parliament have applied to the High Court for permission to join proceedings involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bid to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court. The questions include whether Anwar has immunity from a civil suit filed against him four years ago by his former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Anwar, who is the Tambun member of Parliament, filed to have the questions referred to the Federal Court and to postpone the main trial until the apex court delivers a decision. The High Court is scheduled to hear this application tomorrow before Judge Roz Mawar Rozain. The three applicants, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut), Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (PN-Kemaman, and Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), submitted their request via e-filing yesterday to be allowed to attend the hearing as observing counsel. Their application, filed under Order 92(4) of the Rules of Court 2012, Article 128(2) of the Federal Constitution, and Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, argues that they have a vested interest in the matter as members of parliament. According to legal firm Wan Jawahir & Takiyuddin, acting for the trio, the legal questions raised, particularly Articles 39, 40, 43, and 128(2) of the Federal Constitution, are of public importance and may influence parliamentary debates and public discourse. "Given the significance of these constitutional matters, we believe these MPs deserve access to the proceedings in an official capacity as observers to better inform their roles and responsibilities in Parliament," the firm said in its application. They also requested the court to allow Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, and Datuk Seri Zulkifli Noordin to attend as observing counsel representing the three parliamentarians throughout the proceedings. Yusoff's lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, confirmed receiving a copy of the application and said it may be presented to the court during tomorrow's session.
