More tamu desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the MADANI Government, through KUSKOP, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year.
He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month.
'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement today.
He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000.
Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year.
'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said.
According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000.
As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak
'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said.
The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added.

Loke: Public transport agencies, companies should continue to be led by professionals, not politicians
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Jun -- Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mendengar ucapan daripada Menteri Pengangkutan Anthony Loke semasa Forum Ilmuwan Malaysia MADANI Siri 6 bertajuk Pengangkutan untuk Rakyat: Mengimbangi Antara Kemampuan Rakyat, Kualiti dan Kemampanan Pengangkutan Awam di Menara Prasarana hari ini. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) HAK CIPTA TERPELIHARA PETALING JAYA: The government's approach of appointing experts and professionals, rather than political leaders, to head public transport agencies and companies should continue, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said that experienced and qualified individuals leading public transport agencies were crucial to ensuring more professional and transparent management, rather than being determined by political interests. "My stance is that there should be no political appointments in public transport operators. It must be led by professionals. "We have seen the results; when we appoint professionals and experienced figures to lead organisations, significant changes have occurred," he said at the Malaysia Madani Intellectual Forum Series 6, held at Menara Prasarana here on Wednesday (June 4). He added that Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) served as proof of professional-led management, as the company had shown better performance and service improvements. The forum tonight discussed the topic "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport", and was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Besides Loke, other panellists were Prasarana Malaysia Berhad Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Loke said the improved performance of the national public transport system was the result of continuous efforts to upgrade trains and facilities across all lines, further driven by a professional and experienced management team. Citing Singapore's transport system, he said that although the country was often regarded as having the best public transport, it also faced various technical issues. Meanwhile, Mohd Azharuddin said that Prasarana was now moving forward positively in terms of passenger numbers, operational reliability, and station facility performance. "If you look at the results, our passenger numbers were very low during the pandemic. However, in the last two to three years, various efforts have been made to restore the situation. "In 2022, our daily passenger numbers were around 681,000. Now, in 2025, that figure has increased to approximately 1.31 million people per day," he said. – Bernama

Cabinet to discuss policy on low-altitude airspace, drone mobility
PETALING JAYA: The government will look into a policy for the use of low-altitude airspace and drone mobility, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Responding to a question regarding the use of low-altitude airspace for mobility at the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani, Anwar said drone operations so far have been limited to remote areas, and acknowledged the need to study the matter further. "We will take this into the cabinet meeting tomorrow," he said at the forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." Also present at the forum were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Commenting on the same matter, Loke said Malaysia does not yet have a strategy in place when it comes to low-altitude mobility, particularly the use of drones below 1,000 metres. "We don't yet have a strategy on things like supposed parking or urban mobility. Drone mobility is still in its early stages, especially in terms of technology to carry people or passengers. "There are many proposals from private companies to introduce cargo drones, but we don't yet have a legal framework," he said. However, Loke saidthat for now, the government is focusing more on land-based transport systems. "Even with autonomous vehicles, we don't yet have a legal framework. There are guidelines and pilot projects being carried out in Cyberjaya, but no legislation yet. I think we will look into it, but for me this is not an immediate priority," he said.

Former TV station employee faints while facing 743 data tampering charges
KUALA LUMPUR: A former television station employee fainted in the dock after part of the 743 charges of data tampering involving the company's customer management system were read out to her in the Sessions Court here on Wednesday (June 4). Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, who was serving with Astro at the time, collapsed and fainted as the court interpreter was reading the 30th charge under the Computer Crimes Act 1997 before Judge Norma Ismail. The court then set June 26 for the reading of the remaining 713 charges, after the accused pleaded not guilty to the first 30. The court allowed Nora Idayu bail of RM10,000 with one surety, with the added conditions that she must surrender her passport to the court until the case is concluded and report to the nearest police station once a month. According to the 30 charges, in her capacity as an associate with the Department of Commercial Support Unit at Astro, she allegedly modified data by converting 30 ordinary customer accounts into corporate accounts in the Astro customer management system (AMDOCS CRM), resulting in unauthorised database alterations. The offences were allegedly committed at the Astro Office at Menara Icon, Jalan Tun Razak here. The charges, under Section 5 (1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, provide for a penalty of up to RM100,000 fine or imprisonment of up to seven years, or both, upon conviction. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Rohaiza Abdul Rahman, while the accused was unrepresented. – Bernama
