Virtual Racing thrills families at NSTP booth during Karnival Jom Heboh

KUALA LUMPUR: Visitors to the Karnival Jom Heboh (KJH) at KL Base were treated to an exciting dose of futuristic fun at the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) booth, which featured a virtual racing experience powered by augmented reality (AR) technology. The interactive activity allowed participants to use a gaming steering wheel to control a physical toy car on a designated track. A television screen in front of the drivers displayed the actual course, enhanced with car designs and digital power-ups, creating an immersive virtual racing environment. Rahmat Hilmi, 40, from Keramat praised the unique experience, adding that it brought families together. "It's really something different from the other booths. It brings that family vibe where everyone, regardless of age, can take part," he said. He also suggested a few improvements, including increasing the visibility of the activity from afar to attract more visitors. "Right now, people have to walk past the booth before they notice the TV screen. "Maybe clearer signage or better promotional visuals could help catch attention from a distance," he added. The booth offered the activity at a family-friendly price of RM20 for four people, which many found worthwhile. Meanwhile, checks from morning until 3pm did not see as many visitors flooding into KJH as compared to previous locations. One of the visitors, Ahmad Naqiuddin Shah. 27, who lives nearby the carnival at Jalan Klang Lama said it could be due to the hot weather. "I came because it just so happens to be near my house which is only 15 minutes away. "It might not seem lively right now, especially earlier in the afternoon due to the hot weather. "But maybe people are looking forward to the concert tonight when the temperature is cooler. "But I would recommend people to come because KJH is known for its fun and family-friendly activities. And on the bright side, there is ample parking for visitors," he said. KJH, the roadshow-style carnival will continue its tour across other states, including Penang, Johor, Kelantan, and Sarawak. Adding to the excitement at KL Base will be a special appearance by cast members from the hit film Ejen Ali 2, which is currently screening in cinemas nationwide. In addition to the AR racing experience, visitors can look forward to a host of exciting programmes throughout the day. At 4.30pm, the first Drama Meet and Greet session featuring cast members from Bukan Ipar Sempurna, Fazleena Md Daud, Atira Karma, Jiha Sham and Cahaya Nilam, will take place at Studio Tonton Drama Sangat. This will be followed by a second session at 6.15pm for fans of Aku Bukan Ustazah 2, where Ahmad Syafiq, Fikhree Bakar and Shaza Bae are scheduled to make an appearance. The festivities will culminate in the much-anticipated Konsert Jom Heboh at 9pm on the Pentas Utama stage. The concert will showcase performances by a star-studded lineup including Shiha Zikir, Bunga Isme, Puteri Khareeza, Ameerais, Aisha Retno, Khai Bahar and the group A.X.P, led by Amir Sofaz.

[Watch] Your Personal Oasis: Sony's Palm-Sized Solution To Malaysia's Heat

Subscribe to our FREE While Sony has long been our go-to brand for capturing memories on cameras, filling our rooms with crystal-clear TV displays, and providing the soundtrack to our lives through headphones, their latest innovation tackles something completely different: our eternal struggle with Malaysia's unforgiving heat. Enter the REON POCKET PRO, a personal cooling device that looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie, yet fits discreetly around your neck. Think of it as your personal air-conditioner, but one that you can wear without anyone noticing. It's fascinating to see Sony venture into personal comfort technology. We're used to seeing them dominate entertainment, but this shows they're thinking about our daily comfort in ways we didn't expect. The Reon Pocket was Smart Cooling Meets Smart Design: Comfort Without Compromise The device, launching in Malaysia this July at RM1,199, promises up to 34 hours of cooling relief – particularly appealing for those endless outdoor wedding functions or long commutes in our tropical weather. It's smart enough to adjust its cooling based on your body temperature and surroundings, much like your car's climate control, but for your body. What makes this second-generation device interesting is how it addresses real-world concerns. It's 50% quieter than its predecessor (because nobody wants to sound like they're carrying a mini-fan), and its subtle grey design means it won't clash with your work attire or weekend wear. Granted, while portable fans and cooling towels might set you back just RM20 to RM100, Sony's betting on those who want a more sophisticated solution to beat the heat. From Screens to Comfort: Sony's Climate Game-Changer The most intriguing part? The cooling area is now twice as large, with two cooling modules working together like a tag team to keep you comfortable. It's like having two air-conditioners instead of one, but in a package that fits in your palm. For Malaysians who've mastered the art of planning their day around avoiding the heat – ducking from one air-conditioned space to another – this could be a game-changer. Whether you're queuing for your favourite nasi lemak, waiting for the bus, or attending outdoor events, having your personal cooling system might change how you experience our tropical climate. While it might seem like an unexpected move from a company we associate more with entertainment systems, Sony's venture into personal cooling technology reflects a growing trend among tech companies to think beyond screens and speakers in improving our daily lives. The REON POCKET PRO might not play your favourite songs or take stunning photos, but in a country where 'it's too hot' is practically a national catchphrase, it might just become the most practical Sony device you own. 55-year-old woman charged with trafficking underage boy and girl

JOHOR BARU: A 55-year-old woman was charged in the Sessions Court here today with two counts of trafficking underage children last year. The accused, Haliza Palok, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out by the court interpreter before Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok. According to the charge sheet, Haliza was alleged to have trafficked a boy, aged between 10 and 12, and a girl, aged between 13 and 15 by exploiting them for illegal activities under Section 5(1)(c) of the Children and Young Persons (Employment) Act. The alleged offence was committed at Jalan Kargo 2, Senai Airport City, Senai, at 6.54pm on Dec 19 last year. The charges were framed under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 that carries a sentence of life imprisonment or a minimum of five years' jail and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor from the Immigration Department, Tan Yen Thung, proposed bail of RM20,000 for each charge with two sureties. Tan also proposed the court impose additional conditions including monthly reporting to the Johor Immigration Office and surrendering the accused's international passport to the court. However, lawyer Amarpreet Singh Rajwinder Singh, representing the accused, requested minimal bail, stating that his client was unaware of being charged today and that both she and her husband were unemployed. The court later granted bail of RM17,000 for both charges with two guarantors, along with two additional conditions as proposed by the prosecution. The accused was also prohibited from interfering with prosecution witnesses. The case is fixed for mention on Aug 27 for the submission of documents.

Mom of four charged with trafficking, exploiting children in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A 55-year-old woman has claimed trial to two counts of trafficking and exploiting underage children. The accused, Haliza Palok, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before Sessions Court judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok on Friday (May 30) here. In the first charge, Haliza was accused of trafficking a boy, estimated to be between 10 and 12 years old, and exploiting him for activities in violation of Section 5(1)(c) of the Children and Young Persons (Employment) Act 1966. For the second charge, she was accused of committing the same offence against a girl believed to be between 13 and 15 years old. She was alleged to have committed the offences at around 6.54pm on Dec 19 last year, at Jalan Kargo 2, Senai Airport City. The charges were framed under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which provides for life imprisonment or a minimum of five years' jail and whipping, upon conviction. The prosecution was led by Immigration Department deputy public prosecutor Tan Yen Thung, while Haliza was represented by Amarpreet Singh, who appeared on behalf of lawyer Mohd Amierul Sharafi Shahazan. Tan requested bail to be set at RM20,000 for each charge with two sureties and for the accused to surrender her passport and report to the department once a month. Amarpreet asked for a lower amount, citing that his client and her husband were currently unemployed. He added that the accused, a mother of four, suffers from hypertension and had not been informed earlier that she would be charged in court. 'The accused was only told to go to the Immigration office to give her statement. She and her family had only a few hours to prepare the bail money,' he said. Judge Thalha then set bail at RM17,000 in total with two sureties, and allowed the prosecution's additional conditions. She also instructed the accused not to contact or disturb the victims and fixed Aug 27 for the next mention. It is learnt that the two children, believed to be from the Philippines, were made to work at a battery factory. It was also learnt that the accused had allegedly acted as a middleperson who 'supplied' workers to businesses.

Driver who robbed to pay off loan shark debts pleads guilty

MELAKA: A 29-year-old e-hailing driver who reportedly resorted to crime to pay off his girlfriend's debts has pleaded guilty to robbing and injuring a senior citizen here. Melvin Yen Wei Shern, 29, admitted to the offences when the charges were read to him before Sessions judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah in Ayer Keroh on Friday (May 30). According to the charge sheet, the offences were committed at a goldsmith's shop in Kampung Jawa, Melaka Tengah district, at about 11am on May 22. He was charged with robbing and intentionally causing hurt to Koh Kim Lye, 70, under Section 394 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years with a fine or caning upon conviction. DPP Wardah Ishhar urged the court to set bail at RM20,000, to which Yen's lawyer Kent Tan Chow Teng did not object. The court then fixed June 10 for sentencing. When met after the proceedings, Tan said his client's family declined to post bail as they wanted him to learn his lesson. He said a relative informed him that Yen was trying to settle a debt of about RM200,000, which his girlfriend was said to owe to three illegal moneylenders in another state.
