Mom of four charged with trafficking, exploiting children in Johor
JOHOR BARU: A 55-year-old woman has claimed trial to two counts of trafficking and exploiting underage children.
The accused, Haliza Palok, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before Sessions Court judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok on Friday (May 30) here.
In the first charge, Haliza was accused of trafficking a boy, estimated to be between 10 and 12 years old, and exploiting him for activities in violation of Section 5(1)(c) of the Children and Young Persons (Employment) Act 1966.
For the second charge, she was accused of committing the same offence against a girl believed to be between 13 and 15 years old.
She was alleged to have committed the offences at around 6.54pm on Dec 19 last year, at Jalan Kargo 2, Senai Airport City.
The charges were framed under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which provides for life imprisonment or a minimum of five years' jail and whipping, upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by Immigration Department deputy public prosecutor Tan Yen Thung, while Haliza was represented by Amarpreet Singh, who appeared on behalf of lawyer Mohd Amierul Sharafi Shahazan.
Tan requested bail to be set at RM20,000 for each charge with two sureties and for the accused to surrender her passport and report to the department once a month.
Amarpreet asked for a lower amount, citing that his client and her husband were currently unemployed.
He added that the accused, a mother of four, suffers from hypertension and had not been informed earlier that she would be charged in court.
'The accused was only told to go to the Immigration office to give her statement. She and her family had only a few hours to prepare the bail money,' he said.
Judge Thalha then set bail at RM17,000 in total with two sureties, and allowed the prosecution's additional conditions.
She also instructed the accused not to contact or disturb the victims and fixed Aug 27 for the next mention.
It is learnt that the two children, believed to be from the Philippines, were made to work at a battery factory.
It was also learnt that the accused had allegedly acted as a middleperson who 'supplied' workers to businesses.

Panic over bogus audit call leaves woman RM108,520 poorer
TANGKAK: A 58-year-old woman became RM108,000 poorer after she was duped by scammers posing as officers from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police. The victim received a phone call on May 9 from an individual who claimed she was under investigation for her involvement in a non-existent investment and loan fraud scheme. District police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the caller's convincing impersonation triggered panic, prompting the victim to comply with instructions to "cooperate" by transferring funds from her bank accounts for audit purposes. "She was told her bank account was being investigated and needed to be audited. "She was then instructed to transfer all her savings to two third-party accounts," he said in a statement today. Roslan said the victim made 16 transactions amounting to RM108,520. She lodged a police report yesterday after attempts to contact the bogus officers failed. Roslan urged the public to remain vigilant and verify any suspicious calls claiming to be from enforcement or government agencies. "Do not panic. Always cross-check through official sources before taking action. Scammers rely on fear and urgency to manipulate victims," he added. He also encouraged the public to stay updated on scam tactics via the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Those who believe they have been scammed are advised to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) via the 997 hotline to initiate prompt action to freeze fraudulent accounts.

FBI probing ‘targeted terror attack' in Colorado
WASHINGTON: Several people were injured Sunday in what the FBI called a 'targeted terror attack' in the US state of Colorado, where a group was protesting for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. 'We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado,' FBI chief Kash Patel said on X. Local media cited eyewitnesses describing a man throwing something resembling a homemade Molotov cocktail at a group calling for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Asked if it was a terror attack against the protesters, Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn insisted it was 'way too early to speculate motive' behind the incident, which took place shortly before 1:30 pm (1930 GMT). In one video apparently of the attack, a shirtless man holding clear spray bottles in his hands is seen pacing as the grass in front of him burns. He can be heard screaming 'End Zionists!', 'Palestine is Free!' and 'They are killers!' towards several people in red t-shirts as they tend to a person lying on the ground. Other images showed billowing black smoke above a park. Redfearn told reporters that 'initial callers indicated that there was a man with a weapon and that people were being set on fire,' adding that police arrived 'very quickly.' 'When we arrived, we encountered multiple victims that were injured, with injuries consistent with burns and other injuries,' he said. Police on the scene 'immediately encountered that suspect, who was taken into custody without incident,' Redfearn said. The Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish activist group, said on X that it was 'aware of reports of an attack at today's Boulder Run for Their Lives event.' That event, it said, was a 'weekly meeting of Jewish community members to run/walk in support of the hostages' who were seized during Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, sparking the war in Gaza. Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in New York voiced outrage at the attack. 'Terrorism against Jews does not stop at the Gaza border -- it is already burning the streets of America,' he said in a statement. 'Today, in Boulder, Colorado, Jewish people marched with a moral and humane demand: to return the hostages. In response, the Jewish protesters were brutally attacked, with an attacker throwing a Molotov cocktails at them,' he said. 'Make no mistake -- this is not a political protest, this is terrorism.'
