Woman (46) jailed after being caught on camera setting fire to power box

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Carroll caused €25,000 worth of damage.
Carroll, of Cherry Orchard Avenue, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to arson at Cherry Orchard Parade, on January 18th, 2018. She has 39 previous convictions.
Passing sentence on Thursday, Judge Elva Duffy said it had been a deliberate decision to set the fires and Carroll had caused serious damage. She took into account her apology and personal circumstances.
Judge Duffy noted Carroll was now doing a certain amount to help herself and making efforts to deal with her addiction. She imposed a two and half year sentence and suspended the final 12 months on strict conditions.

Garda Niall Dillon told Derek Cooney BL, prosecuting, that gardaí monitoring cameras in the early hours of the morning observed Carroll attempting to set a fire. A second fire was already lit. Gardaí attended at the scene. Two people, Carroll and a male, fled the scene into a housing estate at Cherry Orchard Parade.
The pairs movements were tracked on Garda cameras and they were observed going into the front garden of a house nearby. Gardai approached them but Carroll jumped railings and fled.
She was apprehended following a short foot pursuit after she tripped over a kerb. She resisted arrest 'wildly' kicking, spitting and shouting obscenities at gardaí. She was placed in a patrol car but jumped out and ran away while gardai were arresting her male co-accused.
She was arrested again and continued to resist gardai until she was restrained and brought to the garda station. At the station she continued to shout and spit. She made contact with a garda's face with her head.

She told gardai she had been 'playing with fire' and said she had 'nothing else to do.' She said she chose those spots because of the cameras. She denied she was being paid or that she owed money.
She outlined how she had used rubbish, tissues, tyres and a lighter to set the pole on fire.
The court heard the case had been delayed after Carroll had 'gone to ground' and took a bench warrant.
Kevin McCrave BL, defending, outlined that Carroll had a difficult upbringing and that a number of family members had tragically taken their own lives.
He said she had become a heroin addict at the age of 16 and was aware she was on 'borrowed time.' He said she is sick of being an addict and wants to get off the 'merry go round' of drug addiction.
Counsel said she was highly intoxicated on the night and accepts what she did. He said she wishes to apologise to everyone. He said she wants to go to drug treatment and is willing to engage with addiction services.

The president did not mention Coristine by name but the former DOGE worker, who is now working in the Social Security Administration, was identified in a Metropolitan Police Department report about the attack. Trump shared a photo of Coristine Tuesday evening on Truth Social, where he appeared bloodied and beaten following the attack. Coristine was with an unnamed woman in downtown D.C. at 3 a.m. Sunday when a group of juveniles approached their car, according to the police report of the incident. The report explains that the suspects approached the victims standing next to the vehicle parked on the 1400 block of Swann Street and demanded that they hand it over before assaulting one of the victims. During the attack, an MPD cruiser pulled up, prompting the attackers to flee. Two of the suspects were apprehended by the on-scene officers. At the same time, one of the victims [Coristine] was treated by emergency services personnel for injuries sustained during the assault. The pair arrested was two 15-year-olds, a male and a female, from nearby Hyattsville, Maryland. They were subsequently charged with unarmed carjacking. Coristine's iPhone 16, worth $1,000, was reportedly stolen during the incident. Marko Elez, a software engineer who also worked at DOGE, before he resigned over a racist social media post, said he took the photo of his friend following the attack. 'My friend Big Balls is a hero. I took this photo after Edward protected a young woman from an attempted carjacking by eight thugs near Dupont Circle,' Elez wrote on X. 'Violence like this in the heart of D.C. is completely unacceptable.' Musk also posted about the incident on X but likewise did not name Coristine. 'A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in D.C.,' Musk said Tuesday. 'A Doge team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her. It is time to federalize D.C.' Coristine claimed to have caught the eye of the world's richest man by simply changing his name on LinkedIn to 'Big Balls.' He left his role with DOGE shortly after Musk left the government in June and quickly landed a new role with the Social Security Administration.

If Mangione is convicted, federal prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.

'Deeply loved' father shot dead in Stoke Newington named
A "deeply loved" father who was shot dead in north London has been named by police. Erdal Ozmen, 45, was found with gunshot injuries by Metropolitan Police officers who were called to Dynevor Road in Stoke Newington, a little after midnight on Tuesday and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Ozmen, was "a father-of-one and was deeply loved by his family", Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who is leading the murder investigation, said. Appealing to the public, he added: "Were you in the Dynevor Road area late on Monday night into early Tuesday morning? Did you see anyone acting out of the ordinary? "Did you hear anything at all which perhaps seemed unusual - maybe people shouting, or a loud vehicle?" A post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out and Mr Ozmen's family are being supported by specialist officers. The motive for the murder remains unclear, officers said. No arrests have been made. Residents said they woke to the sounds of gunshots. Liza Dodds, 58, a youth worker who lives opposite Dynevor Road, said: "My husband woke up and said there was gunshots. The instant reaction was 'how do you know?' "We both got up and had a look. A police officer was doing CPR where the person fell. It seemed like they were going forever." Another resident said: "I heard a few gunshots and the first thing I thought was that it was fireworks, because you don't expect it to be a gun. "I was trying to sleep but then later I heard sirens from the police cars." One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "We were out when it happened so we didn't hear or see anything. "But when we came back at around 1am, the whole area was cordoned off and the police officers told us that it will be a crime scene for a couple of days."
