Italy's Paris wins World Cup downhill to prevent Swiss sweep, Odermatt closes in on overall title

Dominik Paris prevented a Swiss sweep of the podium by winning a men's World Cup downhill race in Kvitfjell, Norway on Friday, but the Italian veteran couldn't stop Marco Odermatt from closing in on another overall title.
Paris claimed his record-extending fourth World Cup win in Kvitfjell after speeding down the 1994 Olympics slope in one minute, 44.67 seconds, beating Odermatt by 0.32 seconds and Stefan Rogentin by 0.63.
Odermatt's second-place finish all but seals another overall title for the 27-year-old Swiss star. The three-time defending champion's 80 race points put him 440 ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen, who does not race downhill or super-G, and 655 clear of Swiss teammate Loic Meillard.
Swiss skiers Franjo von Allmen and Alexis Monney were fourth and fifth, respectively. Their countrymen have dominated downhill races this season with 14 of 21 podium spots so far taken by Swiss skiers.
"It's nice to be captain of such a great team," Odermatt said. "The young guns, they are coming, they are pushing me a lot. I try to stay on the top."

Toronto's James Crawford was the top Canadian, finishing 26th, 2.65 seconds behind Paris. Brodie Seger, of North Vancouver, B.C., finished 28th, Jeffrey Read, of Canmore, Alta., placed 32nd and Raphael Lessard, of Granby, Que., was 46th.
Odermatt can win a second straight Crystal Globe in downhill if he wins Saturday's race. It would be his first win in Kvitfjell.
"I tried several times before in the downhill and never came better than seventh place. A great step," said Odermatt, referring to his best finish in Kvitfjell.

Swiss skiers' dominating run started in the Norwegian resort last year with a win by Niels Hintermann. The 29-year-old Hintermann said last month he was declared free of lymph node cancer.
The 35-year-old Paris won World Cup downhill races in Kvitfjell in 2016, 2019 and 2022, and Friday's victory took his tally altogether to 19, joint-second on the all-time downhill winners list with Peter Muller of Switzerland. Only Austrian skier Franz Klammer won more (25).
"It's a good hill for me," Paris said after his first win for 14 months. The Italian had only two top-10 finishes this season.
Friday's race was initially scheduled to take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on Feb. 2, but that was called off when fog prevented both training runs.
After Saturday's downhill, a super-G is scheduled for Sunday.

CALEDON — After Richard T. Lee's first round of the RBC Canadian Open his wife was telling him how on the PGA Tour's app a fireball appears beside a golfer's name on the leaderboard. That small mental image was enough to fuel Lee on Friday, as he fired a 6-under 64 in the tournament's second round to briefly hold a tie for second. He and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford finished the day in a four-way tie for third at 9 under, three shots back of American Cameron Champ. 'I was thinking about that all today, and I was like, 'oh, I want to see a fireball next to my name again,'' said Lee, smiling by the clubhouse at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. The 34-year-old Lee was born in Richmond Hill, Ont., but moved to Vancouver when he was just a year old. He has been playing golf on the Asian Tour for most of his professional career and is currently third on its order of merit. Golf Canada often invites the best Canadian golfers from around the world to play in the national men's championship but Lee, until Friday, had never made the cut. That hasn't stopped him from aspiring to play in North America's top men's golf circuit, however. 'It's the PGA Tour,' said Lee, adding that he plans to enter the PGA Tour's qualifying school again. 'Any kid out there wants to play out here and perform the way of all the best players out there.' A group of eight Canadians made the cut at the national men's golf championship on Friday, matching the record previously set in 2023 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto and again at Hamilton Golf and Country Club last year. Taylor had a 5-under 65 round to share third with Lee. Taylor Pendrith (68) of Richmond Hill, Ont., was tied for 13th at 7 under and Mackenzie Hughes (66) of Dundas, Ont., was tied for 18th at 6 under. Silverman rolled in a nine-foot putt to birdie the par-5 No. 18 to guarantee he'd see the weekend. 'I saw the cut was at 2 under, but it didn't look promising at 80-something guys, so I felt like I had to make it,' said Silverman. 'It's good when you feel like you have to do something like that and you pull it off.' Matthew Scobie of Oshawa, Ont., and Ashton McColloch, an amateur from Kingston, Ont., were just a shot below the 3-under cutline. Carlo Ancelotti's son Davide joins Brazil as an assistant coach
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's soccer confederation announced on Friday that Davide Ancelotti had joined his father, Carlo Ancelotti, as an assistant coach for the five-time World Cup champions. Davide Ancelotti started his career as an assistant coach in 2015, following his father at Napoli, Everton, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Brazil's soccer body said in a statement that the 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti's arrival 'represents another step in our search for innovation and technical improvements.' 'His international experience and training methodologies will be fundamental for the players' development and for the construction of an even more competitive team,' it said. Carlo Ancelotti's debut with Brazil at Ecuador on Thursday ended in a 0-0 draw, which kept the team in the fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings. Davide Ancelotti is expected to be on the bench on Tuesday, when Brazil hosts third-place Paraguay. Davide Ancelotti initially followed in his father's footsteps as a professional footballer at AC Milan's youth team and then at Borgomanero, but he retired at the age 20 to work in management. Venezuela defeats Bolivia 2-0 to approach World Cup intercontinental playoff spot
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela beat Bolivia 2-0 on Friday to extend its advantage in seventh place in South American World Cup qualifying and a potential spot in an intercontinental playoff for next year's tournament in North America. Bolivian Héctor Cuellar scored an own goal in the fifth minute after a simple pass to goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra ended in the back of the net. The hosts added a second in the 30th minute with striker Salomón Rondón, Venezuela's all-time top goal scorer with 47 goals, after he chested down a cross from Nahuel Ferraresi and scored with his left foot. Bolivia, which now trails Venezuela by four points with only three rounds to play, never threatened goalkeeper Rafael Romo at the Monumental Stadium in the eastern city of Maturin, Venezuela. Also on Friday, Colombia drew Peru 0-0 at home and failed to overtake Brazil in the standings. It was Colombia's fifth consecutive match without a win. The hosts at the Metropolitano Stadium in Barranquilla missed suspended striker Luis Díaz, who scored six goals in World Cup qualifying. Jhon Córdoba and Rafael Santos Borré were also out due to injury. World Cup champion Argentina, which secured its 2026 berth in March, leads South American qualifying after 15 matches with 34 points.
