Fritz into Wimbledon quarter-finals after Thompson retires
The Eastbourne champion broke Thompson twice to seal the first set in just 21 minutes and led 3-0 in the second set.
The Australian then had a medical time-out to deal with an apparent thigh problem.
He returned to the court and slipped 40-0 down in the fourth game before deciding he was unable to continue, with the match lasting just 41 minutes.
"He's been playing five-setters," said Fritz, 27. "He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday you know, so he's been battling out here and I respected him for coming out.
"Obviously his body's not right. So, you know, I feel bad for him."
Thompson, 44th in the rankings, was taken to five sets in his opening two singles matches at Wimbledon.
Fritz, seeking to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final, will next face Russian 17th seed Karen Khachanov, who earlier beat Kamil Majchrzak with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on Court Two.
Fritz won a record fourth Eastbourne title last month and was pushed to his limits in his opening two matches at the All England Club.
The world number five rallied from the brink to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets before going the distance against Gabriel Diallo in the second round.
He then downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets, taking his time on court over three rounds to nearly 10 hours.

Mexico defeat USA 2-1 to retain CONCACAF Gold Cup
A header 13 minutes from time from Mexico skipper Edson Alvarez completed a come-from-behind victory for 'El Tri' after a typically hard-fought tussle between the North American arch-rivals and 2026 World Cup co-hosts. The win was no less than Mexico deserved after dominating for long periods against Mauricio Pochettino's inexperienced USA side, who went into the tournament missing several first-choice regulars. Alvarez's winner capped a fairytale return to Houston after he had limped off in tears at the same venue during Mexico's opening game of the Copa America last year. "It's a very emotional moment for me," the West Ham midfielder said afterwards. "Ever since I got to Houston, I've been thinking about that heartbreak. I just asked life to give me one more joy." The USA had got off to a dream start, center-back Chris Richards heading the hosts into a fourth-minute lead in front of just under 71,000 fans at Houston's NRG Stadium. Sebastian Berhalter's perfectly flighted curling free-kick from wide on the right sowed panic in the Mexican defence and Crystal Palace defender Richards stooped to glance in a powerful header which cannoned off the underside of the bar and over the line. But that early effort was to be the USA's best chance of a first half that Mexico controlled, spending most of the opening 45 minutes camped in the host nation's territory. Mexico's 16-year-old prodigy Gilberto Mora threatened to grab an equaliser in the 24th minute but his curling shot was saved by USA goalkeeper Matt Freese. The breakthrough finally came though in the 77th minute, when Johan Vazquez's flick-on from a free-kick was met by Alvarez who powered a header into the net past Freese. The goal was chalked off for offside, but replays showed Alvarez was clearly onside, and after a check by the Video Assistant Referee, the on-field decision was overturned and the goal stood. Mexico have now won the Gold Cup a record 10 times, three more than the USA, who have seven. "Obviously we're disappointed not to come away with a win," USA captain Tim Ream said after the defeat. "We started out really well and then they obviously got a spell in the game in the second part of the first half. We just missed a little bit of calmness when we won the ball, to try and move them around a little bit," Ream added.

MLB Nationals fire manager Martinez, GM Rizzo after loss
Shortly after the Nats dropped a 6-4 decision at home to Boston, team owner Mark D. Lerner announced Rizzo, the president of baseball operations, would be replaced by assistant general manager Mike DeBartolo and that an interim manager would be named on Monday, an off day for the club. Lerner, in a statement released on social media, praised Martinez and Rizzo for their roles in directing the Nationals to the 2019 World Series title, but they have not enjoyed a winning season or playoff berth since. "While we are appreciative of their past successes, the on-field performance has not been where we or our fans expect it to be," Lerner said. "This is a pivotal time for our club and we believe a fresh approach and new energy is the best course of action for our team moving forward." The Nationals are 37-53, last in the National League East division, and went 7-19 in June. They are 1-4 this month and were swept at home by Boston by 11-2, 10-3 and 6-4 over the US Independence Day holiday weekend. Martinez, hired in October of 2017, was the longest-tenured manager in Nationals history. The 60-year-old American was 500-622 with the Nats after replacing Dusty Baker while Rizzo was in his 17th season as baseball operations boss for the club. The Nationals have traded such stars as Max Scherzer and Juan Soto to obtain younger talent in building for the future but have been unable to make the moves pay off with triumphs. Martinez has spent 39 seasons in baseball as a player, coach and manager. He spent 16 seasons as a player and was an assistant coach on the 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series championship squad before taking his first manager's post with the Nats.
