Rangers beat Celtic to keep SWPL title heat on Hibs as Jo Potter tells chasers to 'step it up'
The capital club held Glasgow City to a 2-2 draw at Meadowbank to preserve their three point lead with two games to go
Hibs moved closer to their first SWPL in 18 years after holding Glasgow City to a point at Meadowbank.
The 2-2 draw means they have preserved their three point lead with just two games to go.
A win over Celtic on Wednesday night would see the put a massive hand on the title - although they could still have to go to Ibrox on the final day of the season needing a point or better given that Rangers have the better goal difference.
Kimberley Smit had got City off to a flier at Meadowbank when she headed in from Hayley Lauder's corner before Eilidh Adams headed Hibs level from a free-kick.
Kathleen McGovern put Hibs in front before the break before Nicole Kozlova levelled for City.
Leanne Ross' side threw everything at it in the frantic final stage but Hibs stood firm.
And Scott has insisted that they are ready to do everything that it takes to get over the line.
They host Celtic now on Wednesday night before having to go to Ibrox on the final day of the season.
And he is wary of his side getting too giddy at their current position.
'We are still at the top,' he said. 'We are still in there and we could have a really positive moment but it could all be taken away for us.
'We are going to keep fighting. One game at a time and we need to keep doing the basics really well.'
And he accepted that his side had to show a gritty side to their game to come away with something.
'It was a battle,' he said. 'In fairness to Glasgow City they probably played the more attractive football and we had to dig in.
'We are disappointed with the way that we played but to see that courage and hunger from the players to see the game out level and not concede when City were throwing everything at it, they deserve immense credit for that.
'We need the same again this week.
'It is nice to play home and we have a good record here this season but we need to be ready for it.'
The draw in Edinburgh enabled Rangers to make up ground. They move into second, ahead of City on goal difference, with Jo Potter applauding the mentality of her side who went into the game knowing that points had been dropped by the top two in the capital.
Kirsty Howat netted the only goal of the game to give them all three points against a Celtic side who have gone through the entire campaign without a win over the Ibrox side.
'It was a big day for us,' said Potter. 'The result beforehand can put a bit of pressure on and you have to stand up to that and show what you are made of.
'We knew we couldn't afford to slip up again so it was a big three points and it was also a really good performance.
'The players stepped up. You can see in the level of performance and the control we had that we have kicked on again. There was a confidence there.
'We are in a good spot. We just need to continue.
'There are two big games to go and we need to step it up again.
'We can't look to the Hibs game right now. We need to do our business on Wednesday. There is no time to slip up. We need to be bang on it against Hearts now this week.'
City manager Ross could not hide her frustration at the performance but insisted that City need to pick themselves up for Wednesday's game against Motherwell.
'It was a poor first-half from us and that has cost us at the end of the day,' she said. 'It is out of our hands now but we need to keep doing our job.
'There are six points left to play for and we need to make sure we are taking them.'
Hearts put six goals past Motherwell, who are yet to pick up a point after the league split.
In the lower half of the table, Montrose's survival hopes were given another boost with a 1-0 victory at Partick Thistle while Spartans beat already-relegated Queen's Park 2-0. Aberdeen thrashed Dundee United 5-0 to move top of the bottom six.

Man City cult hero Scott Carson to leave club – with Chelsea keeper eyed to replace him
Manchester City are ready to make a move for Marcus Bettinelli, Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper, following the departure of long-serving cult hero Scott Carson. Bettinelli, 33, has been targeted as the right profile to support a goalkeeper stable led by Ederson, with hopes of a deal before the transfer window closes on Tuesday for Club World Cup teams to sign players for the tournament. The Chelsea goalkeeper would cost a small fee compared to City's current summer moves for Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri. He has been at Stamford Bridge for four seasons and played just once, yet is recognised by managers as having an important part in the squad for pushing team-mates in training. Bettinelli is also homegrown, which helps with City's quotas for the Premier League and Champions League next season. His only game for Chelsea came in 2022 when he played against Chesterfield in the FA Cup. Earlier in his career he was a regular at Fulham and earned a call-up to the England squad in 2018 under Gareth Southgate, although is uncapped. Carson is leaving the Etihad Stadium after six years at the club following an initial loan. His career has included a Champions League medal in 2023 although he was always back-up to Pep Guardiola's first-choice. 'I've loved every minute of it,' said Carson during a rare interview in 2021. 'Obviously, in my head and all through my career, I've wanted to play, and coming here, I knew that wasn't going to be the case. And I knew it was going to be very difficult to play any games.' City are trying to finalise deals for the squad to be ready for the Club World Cup, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitting they were not aggressive enough in the market a year ago and paid the price.

Man City signing immediately in disagreement with team-mate after £46m transfer
Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Manchester City this week in time for the Club World Cup, but the Dutchman disagrees with his new team-mates due to his views on the revamped tournament Incoming Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders has already entered into a disagreement with one of his new team-mates before his move has even completed. Reijnders is set to undergo his medical in the early part of this week. City have agreed a £46million fee with AC Milan for Reijnders to move to the Etihad Stadium. Should he pass his medical, Reijnders should become a City player in time to feature in the Club World Cup. The controversial tournament kicks off on Sunday when Al-Ahly face Inter Miami. City's campaign gets underway next Wednesday when they face Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia. They then take on UAE's Al-Ain in Atlanta on 23 June and Serie A giants Juventus in Orlando on 26 June in the group stages. They should make it through to the knockouts, with some tipping them to reach the final, which will take place on 13 July. Reijnders is eyeing the tournament as the perfect way to bed into his new club. The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Netherlands and admitted he is relishing the chance to make the move. He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The medical tests? I couldn't wait any longer. The intention is to participate in the Club World Cup with City. I'm excited about it. "This way I can get to know my new teammates straight away. I'll return to Zeist on Sunday evening. Then I'll prepare for Tuesday's match against Malta." It's safe to say that not everyone is looking forward to the revamped tournament though. City have already played 57 games this season across the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup. With as many as seven more games still to play, then less than a month between the final and the new season kicking off, Reijnders' soon-to-be team-mate Manuel Akanji has insisted that the Club World Cup is needed about as much as a hole in the head. "I have been a strong critic of this competition for some time now. We players would love to have some holidays, and some time for our bodies to rest. My City teammates are not exactly overjoyed about the tournament either," he said recently. "But it's now right in our faces, and there is nothing we can do about it. If we take part, then of course we want to win it. But if we reach the final, then the time period for us to recover ahead of the new season will become even shorter. "Set against the expectations we have, this hasn't been a good season. We finished third in the Premier League, three points behind Arsenal, and qualified for the Champions League. "But it is still our worst campaign for some time. However, Pep Guardiola still said he was proud of us for never giving up. The season could have finished far worse than it did."

Tijjani Reijnders ‘really excited' to link up with Man City for Club World Cup
The 26-year-old Netherlands midfielder has agreed a five-year contract to move to City from AC Milan for 55million euros (approximately £46million) and told Italian media he had spent Sunday conducting a medical with Pep Guardiola's side. City will play their first match of the Club World Cup against Morocco's Wydad AC on June 18 and the arrival of Reijnders could also impact the future of Jack Grealish at the Etihad. First win secured on the road to 2026. 🇳🇱🌎#FINNED — Tijjani Reijnders (@T_Reijnders) June 8, 2025 Reijnders told Gazzetta: 'The medical? I couldn't wait to do it. The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates sooner.' Reijnders was a bright spark in a disappointing season for Milan, who only finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on qualification for Europe. Reijnders, who joined the Italian giants from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, scored 15 goals in 2024-25 and will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. As first reported by the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, England international Grealish looks set to miss out on City's final 35-man squad for the Club World Cup. The 29-year-old was not summoned from the bench in last month's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace and omitted from the squad for the last game of the season at Fulham altogether.
