Man City cult hero Scott Carson to leave club – with Chelsea keeper eyed to replace him
Manchester City are ready to make a move for Marcus Bettinelli, Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper, following the departure of long-serving cult hero Scott Carson.
Bettinelli, 33, has been targeted as the right profile to support a goalkeeper stable led by Ederson, with hopes of a deal before the transfer window closes on Tuesday for Club World Cup teams to sign players for the tournament.
The Chelsea goalkeeper would cost a small fee compared to City's current summer moves for Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri. He has been at Stamford Bridge for four seasons and played just once, yet is recognised by managers as having an important part in the squad for pushing team-mates in training.
Bettinelli is also homegrown, which helps with City's quotas for the Premier League and Champions League next season.
His only game for Chelsea came in 2022 when he played against Chesterfield in the FA Cup. Earlier in his career he was a regular at Fulham and earned a call-up to the England squad in 2018 under Gareth Southgate, although is uncapped.
Carson is leaving the Etihad Stadium after six years at the club following an initial loan. His career has included a Champions League medal in 2023 although he was always back-up to Pep Guardiola's first-choice.
'I've loved every minute of it,' said Carson during a rare interview in 2021. 'Obviously, in my head and all through my career, I've wanted to play, and coming here, I knew that wasn't going to be the case. And I knew it was going to be very difficult to play any games.'
City are trying to finalise deals for the squad to be ready for the Club World Cup, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitting they were not aggressive enough in the market a year ago and paid the price.

Tottenham close in on appointing Thomas Frank as new head coach
Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite Europa League success, and quickly set their sights on Frank – who has gained admirers for his work over an impressive seven-year period at the west London club. After positive discussions over the weekend, there is a growing confidence that Frank will be the man to replace Postecoglou, PA understands. Frank's current deal at Brentford runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. Brentford are expected to hold out for Frank's release clause but, while an official approach from Tottenham is yet to occur, the Danish coach is expected to make the move across London. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Poor domestic form during the 2024-25 season accounted for Postecoglou's job as the Spurs board were forced to make 'one of the toughest decisions' they have had to make in dismissing the head coach who ended a 17-year trophy drought. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' a club statement on Friday read. Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 PA understands Tottenham have also relieved coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo of their duties. Ryan Mason left his role as Spurs first-team coach last week to take over as West Brom boss, which opens the door for Frank to bring in some of his own staff. Another departure from Spurs this summer will be Scott Munn, who was made chief football officer at the club in 2023, PA understands. Spurs technical director Johan Lange has remained in post and is set to renew allegiances with compatriot Frank. A post shared by Brentford Football Club (@brentfordfc) Frank and Lange worked together at Danish club Lyngby before they both made their mark in the Premier League. Lange attempted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022 when he worked at the Midlands outfit. Former Brondby boss Frank has developed a strong reputation in English football since he took over Brentford, with his tactical nous and man-management skills often lauded by rival managers and pundits. After Frank guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, he quickly enabled them to compete strongly in the Premier League despite a modest budget and has continued to be linked to a number of high-profile vacancies in recent years.

Brentford next manager odds: New favourites revealed as Tottenham close in on Thomas Frank
JUSTIN COCHRANE is favourite for the Brentford job. That's according to the latest odds from talkSPORT BET, who've installed Cochrane at 4/7 to replace Thomas Frank at the Gtech Community Stadium. Frank, who took over at Brentford in 2018, looks increasingly likely to join Tottenham following their decision to sack Ange Postecoglou. The Dane, 51, guided Brentford into the Premier League, winning the Championship play-off final at Wembley in 2021. But reports suggest his seven-year stay is close to ending with Spurs set to make a formal approach in the coming days. Brentford would be entitled to compensation for Frank, with sources suggesting it will cost upwards of £10million to get him before his contract expires in 2027. With those inside Tottenham reportedly "positive" that a deal can be struck - Brentford will have to begin the task of searching for his replacement? But who are the leading candidates? talkSPORT BET have Cochrane as the early frontrunner at 4/7. Cochrane, 43, is currently an assistant coach at Brentford and was recently appointed to a dual role with England's senior men's team under Thomas Tuchel. A former player who retired in 2013, he began his coaching career at Tottenham, working with young talents like Noni Madueke and Kyle Walker-Peters. He later joined the FA, progressing from England U16s to U17s head coach. In 2021, he became Manchester United's head of player development, playing a key role in their FA Youth Cup win featuring future stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Cochrane joined Brentford in 2022. Kieran McKenna is next in the betting markets at 7/2, with a big jump to third-favourite Danny Rohl at 8/1. Michael Carrick is priced at 12/1 followed by several high-profile bosses including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche, Edin Terzic, Marco Rose and Gary O'Neil.
