Revealed: How Meghan Markle's 'warm, friendly, hug-everyone approach' caused tension in the 'rather awkward' royal household
Indeed when Harry and Meghan started dating, Kate and William reportedly found the former actress 'delightful' - with the young royals appearing at a number of engagements together.
Fast forward to the present and, while the so-called 'peace summit' in July 2025 suggests that relations between the Sussexes and the Prince and Princess of Wales could be thawing, both camps appear to be a long way from a reconciliation.
It has been widely established that Meghan was at the centre of the tension between Harry and William in particular. But one royal author has claimed the falling out was to do with how the Duchess of Sussex acted, not what she said.
Meghan's 'warm, friendly, hug-everyone approach' ruffled feathers, according to Tom Quinn's history of royal servants, titled Yes, Ma'am.
He wrote: 'It made William uncomfortable because [Meghan] hugged him virtually every time they bumped into each other.'
The prince's opposition to the displays of affection was not due to a dislike of Meghan but concern for what courtiers might think.
'The hugging and cheek kissing fuelled gossip among the staff that Meghan was flirting with William, which she was obviously not. But the tense atmosphere caused by all the touchy-feeliness (and the resultant gossip) deepened the rift between the brothers,' Quinn said.
Likewise, Meghan clashed with William's 'rather awkward, even inhibited personality' - which she reportedly found 'baffling'.
Quinn wrote: 'A member of staff recalled Meghan asking, "Why do William and Charles sound so serious all the time?"
'She used to make jokes about Harry not having the same parents as William, as she insisted, "Harry isn't pompous at all. He's chill".'
But it was Meghan's treatment of staff while working as a royal that put the most strain on the princes' relationship.
Concerns were raised to the Sussexes about their alleged behaviour towards staff as early as 2017, it was reported in Robert Lacey's Battle of Brothers book.
Meghan would send emails as early as 5am, leaving staff with a 'barrage' of messages in their inboxes, a Kensington Palace source claimed.
The couple reigned over a 'really toxic environment' which saw colleagues shaking before meetings alongside allegations of bullying, they added. There was even a claim the encounters left one employee with PTSD.
While Meghan brushed off a complaint about her conduct from a senior aide, claiming 'it's not my job to coddle people', Prince William did not respond so flippantly to the issue.
When Jason Knauf – a royal aide who worked with the Sussexes – presented William with a 'dossier of distress' about their behaviour he 'went ballistic' and was left 'astonished' and 'horrified' by what he heard, according to Lacey.
William's anger stemmed from the fact that a tradition of treating the staff 'like family' had been broken and that he personally knew many of those named, Lacey wrote.
Harry and his brother then allegedly had a testy phone call, in which the Duke of Sussex 'flared up in a fierce defence of his wife'.
Lacey added: 'The moment the prince heard the bullying allegations, he got straight on the phone to talk to Harry – and when Harry flared up in furious defence of his wife, the elder brother persisted.
'Harry shut off his phone angrily, so William went straight round to find his brother on the Kensington campus.'
As early as 2019, rumours of a falling out between the brothers began circulating.
It was first addressed by Harry in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, with him saying: 'You have good days, you have bad days.'
By 2020, tensions appeared to have deepened when Harry and Meghan announced their plans to step back as senior royals.
Harry later claimed in his Netflix series with Meghan that William shouted at him during the Sandringham summit.
The brothers were last publicly together at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in September 2022, though they both attended the private funeral for their uncle Robert Fellowes last summer.
The estrangement between the two princes had been 'hard and sad ', Knauf revealed in an Australian documentary this year.
He said: 'We have ups and downs in family. Even when you really love someone, you can have times when you don't want to spend that much time with them.
'It's very difficult to have this stuff play out in the public eye, but [William's] chosen to keep his thoughts on it private and I think all of us who know him really have to respect that.
'We should do the same, but I will say of course it's been hard and sad - especially for all of us who know both of them.'
Meghan's 'touchy-feely' style does have some fans. Producer Jane Marie, who worked with Harry and Meghan during the development of Archewell Audio projects, insisted to Vanity Fair that Meghan is 'just a lovely, genuine person'.
Other staff members have claimed that she would send her employees gifts ranging from dog leashes to skincare products.

Terry Reid's remarkable singing voice ensured he stood out in a golden age of British rock vocalists. So much so that in the late 1960s both Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore, the respective guitarists and leaders of the heavy rock bands Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, approached him to front their groups. That Reid, who has died of cancer aged 75, turned them both down, could have reduced him to a footnote in rock history, yet his singular talent continued to be recognised by musicians from Aretha Franklin to Dr Dre. Reid's lack of chart success – he would only release six studio albums in a career that spanned almost 60 years – should not detract from his achievements: alongside his powerful voice (his nickname was 'Superlungs'), he was also a gifted guitarist and songwriter, while two of his albums, River (1973) and Seed of Memory (1976), would achieve retrospective critical acclaim and find, once reissued, a far wider audience than when first released. Reid was also a valued collaborator: he performed and/or recorded with musicians from the Brazilian vocalist Gilberto Gil, through the Californian singer-songwriters Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, to the rap producer Dr Dre. When declining Page, Reid recommended he seek out Robert Plant, a teenage vocalist that he had encountered in the Midlands, and his band's drummer, John Bonham, and thus Led Zeppelin was born. 'It's good to check your ego and support other artists' visions,' Reid told the Guardian in 2024, adding, 'I'm part of a society of musicians and I love that I can go out there and sing.' Born in Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire, to Grace (nee Barber) and Walter Reid, Terry was raised in the village of Bluntisham. Walter owned a tractor dealership while Grace managed a small orchard that grew apples for cider. Reid recalled that his mother would stand him on a crate so that he could sing to the women she worked alongside during the apple harvest. Attending St Ivo school in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, Reid formed the Redbeats with schoolmates, and regularly played local venues. One evening in 1965 at the Palais in Peterborough, the Redbeats supported Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, an instrumental rock band. Jay was so impressed by the 15-year-old Terry that he approached his father to ask if he could join the Jaywalkers as vocalist. Parental permission granted, Reid left school and relocated with the Jaywalkers to London. He then underwent an intensive apprenticeship singing R&B hits in pubs and clubs across Britain. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger witnessed a performance at the Marquee club in 1966 and invited the Jaywalkers to join the Rolling Stones' UK tour alongside Ike and Tina Turner and the Yardbirds, featuring Page, who would later invite Reid to join his new band. Reid, however – with shout-outs from Franklin, who told the press on a 1968 visit to the UK that 'there are only three things happening in England: the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Terry Reid' – was determined to go solo. The same year, Mickie Most, then one of Britain's most successful pop producers, signed him. While Most had launched such acts as Donovan and the Animals, he and Reid failed to gel; Reid's somewhat overwrought vocals on his 1968 debut album, Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid, met with public indifference. In 1969, after recording his eponymous second album, Reid was again invited by the Stones to join them on tour, this time across the US. Before the tour, however, he fell out irreparably with Most, yet found himself locked into a recording contract. The album was stronger than Reid's debut, but Most declined to promote it. Reid relocated to California and continued to tour, performing at Glastonbury festival in 1971 (so appearing in Glastonbury Fayre, a feature documentary co-directed by Nicolas Roeg), while litigation with Most continued. Atlantic Records finally resolved the dispute and signed Reid, releasing his 1973 album River. A beautifully meandering blend of rock, folk, blues, jazz and bossa nova that baffled many (including Atlantic) when initially released – its abstract textures did not attract radio play – it was appreciated by a new audience on its reissue in the early 2000s. Similarly Seed of Memory, on ABC, and produced by Reid's friend Graham Nash, failed to reach listeners at the time, despite following more conventional song structures. On Rogue Waves (1978), Reid performed uninspired rock versions of 60s-era pop hits and pleased no one. He retreated to working as a session musician, returning for the 1991 album The Driver. With a bombastic production by Trevor Horn, Reid appeared adrift on his own album. Reid sat out much of the 90s until a Monday night residency at a Beverly Hills bar became a magnet for his fans – one of whom, Thomas Brooman, director of Womad festival, invited Reid to perform at the 2002 event. Chris Johnson, a film producer who had licensed one of Reid's songs for the 1999 British feature The Criminal, organised some more UK dates, and Reid began regularly performing on this side of the Atlantic, returning to Womad and Glastonbury festivals alongside summer tours and residencies at Ronnie Scott's jazz club. This led to the 2012 Live In London album, his final release. The reissues of River and Seed of Memory brought renewed media attention and approaches from younger musicians such as Alabama 3 and DJ Shadow. His songs also began to be placed in Hollywood films, while the actor Johnny Depp funded new recordings by Reid (so far unreleased). A UK tour for this September was cancelled after Reid was diagnosed with cancer in June. A 1976 marriage to Susan Johnson ended in divorce in 1982. Reid is survived by his second wife, Annette (nee Grady), whom he married in 2004, and two daughters, Kelly and Holly, from a previous relationship. Sharon Osbourne has revealed her husband Ozzy's heartwarming final words about his fans after he said farewell to them with his last Black Sabbath concert. The Black Sabbath frontman, famously known as the Prince of Darkness, died on last month at the age of 76 - just weeks after performing his final show with the band. And in a new interview, which took place just five days before his death, Sharon gushed about the concert, admitting it was a 'huge success'. She told Pollstar : ' It was the first time, I think, that anybody's gone into retirement and done it, where the show is streamed and it goes to charity. 'So it's the first time anybody has said goodnight like that, it's the perfect way, when you've had such a long career, to end it - I never wanted Ozzy to just disappear without some big event. The wife of the music legend also revealed how Ozzy was blown away by the support at the concert. She explained: 'He [Ozzy] turned around and he said to me that night, he said, 'I had no idea that so many people liked me".' Ozzy took to the stage for his farewell concert at Villa Park stadium in his native Birmingham less than three weeks before his death - reuniting with his original Black Sabbath bandmates for the first time since 2005. The concert was to raise money for three charities: Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Acorns Children's Hospice. More than 42,000 fans packed into the venue for the Back To The Beginning show, during which he told the crowd in his final speech: 'You've no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart.' A message on screen then read: 'Thank you for everything, you guys are [expletive] amazing. Birmingham Forever,' before the sky lit up with fireworks. Ozzy had told of it being his last performance due to his health, having opened up about his battle with Parkinson's in 2020. The musician had undergone seven surgeries in the past five years, including a fourth spinal operation in 2023, and had been battling Parkinson's disease since 2003. Before his final show, Ozzy said he hoped to continue recording music after retiring from live performing, but he heartbreakingly died before he was able to do so. Ozzy's last solo album, 2022's Patient Number 9, featured a long list of guest artists, including hid Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Zakk Wylde, and Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, among others. Last month, huge crowds descended on Birmingham to pay tribute to the beloved Prince of Darkness at his funeral procession. The funeral cortege was led by a live brass band, Bostin' Brass, who performed versions of Black Sabbath songs such as Iron Man, as thousands of tearful devotees lined the streets and sang along in Ozzy's memory. The hearse carrying the singer's coffin - adorned with purple flowers spelling out 'Ozzy' - passed the star's childhood home in Lodge Road, Aston, shortly after midday. Flowers had been placed outside the terraced property, close to Villa Park, while the owners of the house put up a picture of Osbourne in the front bay window. Sharon led the procession with her children Jack, Aimee and Kelly and Ozzy's son Louis from his first marriage as they comforted each other amid their devastating grief. Thousands of people were pictured taking their places not only on Black Sabbath Bridge but along the city centre route along which his cortege travelled towards the Black Sabbath Bridge bench. Fans clapped and cheered chanting 'Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy' as the rock legend's hearse passed through the streets of Birmingham as Sharon watched on and brushed away tears. Describing Ozzy as a 'working class hero' who loved his city, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham said: 'I got to know him in the last few weeks when we gave him the freedom of the city and he was just so humble, so down to earth. He was a working class hero. 'I couldn't tell he was a rock star, he was just an ordinary guy, so caring. He had working class roots and his loved his fans, he loved his city, he always promoted Birmingham wherever he went, he was proud to have been born in Aston.
