New Texans RB Nick Chubb ready for rejuvenation to career in Houston
When signed to a one-year deal, the Houston Texans knew the risk of bringing in a player like running back Nick Chubb ahead of a pivotal season.
They also know the reward of what a healthy version can bring to their backfield. That certainly outweighed the downside when deciding on whether $2.5 million needed to be given to a player who could get Houston over the hump.
When healthy, Chubb can be a 1,000-yard, downhill runner with no end in sight. At 50%, he's a useful third-down option. While the Texans can't expect Chubb to regain his Cleveland Browns' potential, they expect him to be a solid secondary option behind Pro Bowler Joe Mixon.
Yes, barring an injury, Mixon will remain the starter, but the potential tandem of two former AFC North standouts working together has many in the Texans' organization ready to see it in action.
'We all know the caliber of player that Nick can be when he's healthy and when he's at the top of his game,' coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. 'He's a dynamic player. He's a game changer. So, we're just easing him in. We'll see how far he gets.'
Injuries have derailed the once Hall of Fame-caliber career to close out his time with the Browns. In Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, Chubb suffered a season-ending knee injury that cost him the first six games of 2024. When returning, he was still dealing with the lingering after-effects, leading to him finishing with 332 yards and three touchdowns.
He averaged just 3.3 yards per carry last fall, leading to Cleveland gaining the No. 2 overall pick.
'We understand its history,' Ryans said of Chubb. 'But, we don't dwell on that. We're giving him an opportunity. We'll see how it turns out for us here in Houston.'
In his first meeting with the Texans, Chubb admitted that he wasn't near full strength last season and could feel the limitations in game. That's now a thing of the past as he begins the next chapter of his career in Houston.
'Injuries happen,' Chubb said Wednesday. 'With the injury I had, it takes about two years to get back. So I'm over the hump. I was able to get a full year in, of doing the things I do best. Now I'm feeling good as I have been in a long time."
Even if the Texans get a fraction of the All-Pro runner, they'll be in good shape next fall. After Mixon missed several games due to injury, Houston's offense became a pedestrian one-dimensional unit that couldn't find a spark on the ground.
That won't happen in 2025 now with Chubb on the roster, who's excited to reignite his career under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley.
"He knows what he's doing. He knows his stuff," Chubb said of Caley. "We talked about the run schemes, things like that, what his plans are. I mean, I'm impressed. I'm happy. And I'm excited.'
The Texans return for the start of training camp late next month.

Jarren Duran on Move? Insider Reveals Red Sox 'Will Try' to Trade an Outfielder
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox are 34-26 this season. They are nine games back of the New York Yankees and three games back of a wild card berth. At this point, they are not solidified as buyers or sellers. The Red Sox could flip a switch and turn themselves into undoubted buyers at the July 31 deadline. However, that may not change their desire to move one of their outfielders at the trade deadline. The Athletic's Jim Bowden revealed the team's plan at this year's deadline. "After subpar starts, the (Atlanta) Braves, Red Sox and (Texas) Rangers don't appear to be postseason teams this year, but most in the industry believe they will make trades to try to improve their respective rosters for the rest of this season and next rather than being typical sellers," wrote Bowden. "The Braves will focus on acquiring more pitching (starting and relieving). The Red Sox will try to deal one of their outfielders for starting pitching help and an upgrade at first base." Elsa/Getty Images The Red Sox have a logjam in their outfield, and it is about to get even worse. Wilyer Abreu was placed on the injured list to make way for Roman Anthony, the No. 1 prospect in baseball. However, when Abreu is healthy, the Red Sox will have Abreu, Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran. Add Masataka Yoshida to that mix and something will have to change. Abreu was a Gold Glove Award winner as a rookie and will not be a free agent until 2030. Rafaela has already signed a long-term extension. Anthony is a highly touted prospect and figures to be the future of the Red Sox. Yoshida's contract will be difficult to trade. That leaves Duran, who was an All-Star last year and has already received some trade interest. Duran will be a free agent before Abreu and Rafaela, and has great trade value. Moving him could be a move the Red Sox make regardless of their record. Who they get in return could be dictated by the record, however. If they are out of contention, they could covet more prospects. If they are in the postseason race, they could target starting pitchers with some club control to help them win now. Eagles' AJ Brown Thrilled With Cowboys Acquisition of George Picks
The Philadelphia Eagles always knew that their run for a second straight NFC East title would be far more difficult than last year. The mere fact there hasn't been a repeat winner since the 2004 team, and the Washington Commanders improving their roster over the offseason, only enhanced that belief. Advertisement And now, maybe? There's another team ready to get back to competing with the Eagles for NFC East supremacy. The Dallas Cowboys. While Dallas' 7-10 record was nothing to celebrate last season, they were one of the most injured units in sports last year. It's no wonder why the Dak Prescott-led team faltered midway through the year like they did. During the offseason, they were also able to make some major acquisitions, including the trade for Pittsburgh Steelers wideout George Pickens. While the Georgia star has never been to a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team, he possesses freakish athleticism that will make NFL defenses nervous. Advertisement It's why, following the trade, Eagles All-Pro A.J. Brown - in an unusual way - sort of celebrated the move. 'I like that, I ain't gonna lie,' said Brown on his YouTube channel. 'We're going to have to worry about (Dallas), for sure. We're going to have to worry about them. I like the trade. I do like the trade.' 'I like George Pickens, I like CeeDee Lamb. And they collab. It's going to be exciting to watch. Because all that does is bring the best out of us. So, if we know how they coming, we are going to have to step it up.' The league is always better when the Eagles and Cowboys are at each other's throats for the division crown. It seems, after a year hiatus, that fans of both teams might just be able to see that once again.
