A map, a myth and a pre-Incan lagoon: the man who brought water back to a drought-ridden town

One day in 1983, while studying a hand-drawn map from 1792 of his home town in Ecuador, Galo Ramón, a historian, came across a dispute between a landowner and two local Indigenous communities, the Coyana and the Catacocha. The boundary conflict involved an ancient lagoon, depicted on the map.
'The drawing depicted a lagoon brimming with rainwater,' says Ramón. Ravines were depicted forming below the high-altitude lagoon, indicating that it supplied watersheds further down – contrary to the typical flow where a watershed feeds into the lagoon.
Ramón had discovered a long-forgotten ancient water management system conceived by the Paltas, a pre-Incan civilisation that inhabited the semi-arid region more than 1,000 years ago.
Ramón set out to recreate the Paltas' lagoon system and, 40 years on, the region has enjoyed an environmental regeneration, offering solutions for Ecuador – which regularly faces severe droughts – and other parts of the world struggling to address water scarcity with limited resources.
Galo Ramón was born in Catacocha, southern Ecuador, in 1952, a time when access to water for drinking and irrigation was unreliable. As a young man, he moved to Quito for university and to pursue his career as a historian. Eventually, he directed his research towards the history of the Paltas canton in Catacocha's province of Loja.
'I was born in Paltas, where people have very little water. Although I don't live there any more, I was eager to contribute with my knowledge,' he says.
When Ramón began his research in Catacocha, an urban area with a population of 8,000, people barely had half an hour of water a day. 'People here live in constant insecurity about the chances of rain,' says Ramón.
The region has highly variable rainfall patterns due to its location at the convergence of two ocean currents – the Humboldt and South Equatorial. When the Humboldt current predominates, there is minimal rainfall, averaging about 300mm (12in) to 400mm a year. Approximately every seven years, when an El Niño occurs – warming sea surface temperatures – annual rainfall can rise to 4-5 metres.
In years with consistent rainfall, most of it occurs in just one or two months, with about 70% falling in March and April. During this period, there are usually three to five intense tropical storms, when up to 850mm of rainfall can occur in the region – more than in many other parts of the country.
But as the region has very steep, rocky and irregular soil with poor permeability, water rapidly runs off and waterways tend to dry out. From May to December, the region experiences no rain, strong winds and intense sunlight, which cause soil erosion and reduce moisture in the soil. Still, the Paltas people not only managed to survive but thrive in this environment.
'So I began a historical investigation into the Paltas, including a series of Indigenous myths that still survive,' says Ramón, 'as that, it seemed to me, could offer modern solutions to the problem of drought.'
Ramón discovered that designs for the Pisaca lagoon were recorded in maps, wills, accounts of land disputes, property titles and interviews.
He realised the Paltas had developed a system for sowing and harvesting water that involved collecting and infiltrating rainwater, groundwater and underground runoff (sowing) to recover it later when it reappeared in springs and wells downstream (harvesting).
That system enabled the Paltas to regulate water flows and store water in aquifers for domestic use and irrigation during periods of drought. 'The springs tend to increase significantly during the rainy months and then dry out by August due to poor soil permeability. Without the Paltas' system, water runoff is rapid, so you don't have a permanent source to feed the spring,' Ramón says.
The main element of this system is the artificial lentic – or still water – wetland (cocha in Quechua) created at high altitudes to collect rainwater during the rainy months. The Paltas built these lagoons on fractured rocky terrain – the permeability of the pond bottoms allowed for slow water infiltration and aquifers to recharge.
'Then they planted hydrophilic plants inside the lagoon, which developed roots that helped retain the water, slowing infiltration so that the lagoon could last all year,' says Ramón.
As hydrophilic plants cover the surface of the lagoon, they also prevent excessive water evaporation. The Paltas also observed zones where plants retained their leaves even in the driest months of the year due to higher levels of soil moisture. This made it possible to follow the direction of the subsurface flow in the shallow aquifer.
'The leaves are green because the aquifer is right below. So the Paltas observed that line of greenery in the dry months and were able to place the lagoons perfectly,' says Ramón.
The Paltas also built small dams along rivers to control runoff during the rainy season, which infiltrated downstream, creating a wet microsystem that maintained soil moisture. They also cared for headwater forests that captured moisture from the mist and planted vegetation on slopes to reduce erosion and surface runoff.
More than 50 species of trees, shrubs and groundcover plants emulating forest biodiversity enhanced the system, helping the Paltas retain water in their fields.
Ramón and his colleagues noted the remains of those systems during fieldwork and interviewed local people, collecting stories and traditions.
That was when Ramón deciphered the meaning of an Indigenous myth, that of 'touro Cango' (Cango the bull), he had heard as a child.
'The myth said that the bull lived in Catacocha while there were lakes, as he liked the grass that only grew in them. If there were no grass, he would not eat,' says Ramón. 'This means that when the lakes disappeared, the bull disappeared too.'
The grasses that Cango the bull ate were hydrophilic plants essential to the wetland. 'Little by little, the ancient water-management system described in myths, documents, petroglyphs and stone carvings was aligned as a coherent whole,' says Ramón.

The Paltas' system faded from memory during the early 18th-century Spanish colonial period due to a decline in the Indigenous population from diseases such as smallpox and measles, landowners expanding their properties and the Catholic church draining lakes linked to pre-Christian rituals.
The land was eventually given over to cattle and sugar cane. Even gardens were abandoned because of a lack of water, which increased food insecurity. Pisaca lagoon was the last to dry out, less than a century ago.
As a result of the disappearance of the Paltas' lagoon system, the Catacocha aquifers and springs became depleted, and water was available for only half an hour a day by 2001.
In 2005, Ramón, who by then was the leader of Comunidec, a human rights foundation, decided to rebuild the Paltas' lagoon system.
Estefanía Maldonado, a constitutional rights lawyer who became involved with the foundation from the outset, says their goal at that stage was to empower peasant communities and civil society.
Vilma Collaguazo, 44, who lives in Catacocha, began attending project meetings and workshops early on. She remembers that when she first heard of the plan, she didn't believe it would work. 'We had no idea how the lagoons were going to fill up, given that they were so big,' she says.
Comunidec secured resources, and the project began with the restoration of the lagoon on the eastern slopes of Pisaca mountain between 2005 and 2008. It is now the largest, with a storage capacity of 78,420 cubic metres.
'By the end of 2005, there were some hefty rains and the lagoons were filled,' Collaguazo recalls.
'Since then, there was water almost year-round in the springs, and even new springs emerged. People had water to drink and for their crops, so we began to believe again.'
In 2010, the Nature and Culture International Foundation and bought 406 hectares (1,000 acres) of land around Pisaca, supported by Comunidec, to create a reserve, remove cattle and use the land to maintain the water system permanently.
By 2013, 28 lagoons had been built, as well as other elements of the water management system, such as tajamares (small dams or weirs) and water reservoirs, that had been part of the landscape more than 1,000 years ago.
Since then, local people have reforested the area with native plants that reduce water evaporation, conserve moisture and protect the slopes. The project has increased Catacocha's water availability from one to 10 hours daily and enhanced food security through community gardens, resulting in the creation of 250 lagoons and tajamares.
Antonio Díaz, who has been involved with the project since 2005, has reaped the benefits. 'I live not far from the Pisaca lagoon and have plenty of water for my little garden and my animals,' he says. 'It is truly a good thing.'
Despite its success in reducing water scarcity and food insecurity, successive governments in Ecuador have not been persuaded to invest in rebuilding the systems.
'Perhaps politicians don't see that it is an investment that will yield immediate returns,' Ramón says. 'This year it rained little, so the hydroelectric plants lack water. When it rains, there is no runoff management. Ancient techniques allow you to do just that and could be a solution for all of Ecuador.'
Collaguazo believes that Catacocha demonstrates how water scarcity can be addressed with positive environmental outcomes and without significant investment.
'Water is a constitutional right for all. Yet, how do you provide it to a rural community that may be in debt and lack the cashflow to carry out projects?' she asks.
'We don't necessarily need monumental projects to have water. We can also do it by recovering ancestral knowledge.'

'There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self,' the prominent English scientist Thomas Henry Huxley once said. Nicknamed 'Darwin's bulldog' for his pugnacious defence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Huxley believed that we shouldn't claim to know things for which there is no evidence. Brought to world attention 190 years ago, when the 26-year-old Charles Darwin arrived at the Galapagos during his five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, the Galapagos has proved itself over the decades to be one of the world's finest places to see wildlife. Thanks to the foresight of the Ecuadorian government, who in 1959 made the archipelago a national park, today its unique biodiversity has been conserved, making it the world's finest natural laboratory for studying evolution. 'There has never been a better time to visit the Galapagos,' Pablo Vargas, one of the certified naturalist guides, tells me, as we stroll along the copper sands of Rabida Island. Thanks to development projects that have brought together scientists and grassroots volunteers, the islands' conservation data is now certainly impressive. The numbers of endemic wildlife are increasing each year and invasive species (the pigs, goats and rats brought to the islands by passing ships) have been eradicated, in large part due to work undertaken in tandem with Leonardo DiCaprio's charity Re:wild. A preservation-first approach to tourism has also been developed, bringing conservation-minded visitors to this fragile region of the planet, and in turn raising much-needed funding. One of the newest ships to transport high-end visitors around the islands from this May is Hermes, a 50m catamaran that bridges the gap between expedition-style cruise ships carrying up to 100 passengers and smaller local boats. It was launched, said Esteban Velásquez, the second-generation CEO of the Ecuadorian, family-owned, Via Natura, because he recognised that the ultra-rich weren't being catered for when cruising the Galapagos. 'On the cruise liners you're just a number, while the small boats lack amenities,' he explained. While there are private superyachts for charter in the area, he added, restrictions are tight. Which makes Hermes — built in Ecuador and exclusively operated in the Galápagos — the first of its kind. The equatorial sun is riding high as I approach the yacht on a speedy tender, and I catch sight of the first of the full-height tinted windows that give the multihull a distinctly superyacht aesthetic. There is also a distinctive fourth deck — on which passengers can dine on private tables, while observing nightly visitors such as sea lions sleeping on the aft deck near big-billed pelicans and, in the water, circling Galapagos sharks. Inside Hermes, the collaborative vision of Velásquez, his wife, and the interior designer Gabriela Soto of the Dallas-based DeLeo & Fletcher Design manifests in a contemporary cocoon of air-conditioned comfort. The interior is decorated in shades of oatmeal and cream, with wood and brushed stainless steel. There are Ecuadorian touches — headboards carved by Ecuadorian carpenters and soap dispensers hewn from local stone; as well as a library, a mosaiced hammam and sundeck hot-tub. There are 12 butler-serviced double guest suites, each with a private balcony and whirlpool bath in which, on my second morning, I soaked while watching a blood orange sunrise. The two master suites, which also have capacious walk-in wardrobes, can interconnect to an additional bedroom or a private lounge. Across all four decks guests can enjoy the views of wildlife, which last year drew a record 330,000 visitors to these islands. Within minutes of touching down on Baltra Island, I glimpsed the mustard-hued scaly form of a land iguana crawling through tall grass. Across the next four days, the wildlife sightings kept on coming: a Porter's tortoise (its hulking carapace slowly marching across petrified magma cannonballs), a flock of shrimp-pink flamingos, a red-breasted lava lizard (tiptoeing past a razor snake), swooping cactus finches, divebombing frigatebirds (the bully boys of the skies), and nesting pairs of blue-footed boobies (one male giving a nonchalant display of a mating dance).On our third day, on a late-afternoon beach landing on Sante Fé, we found ourselves alongside a colony of sleeping sea lions, their barks and coughs reverberating across the sandy shore. The previous day, we'd snorkelled among them, small pups whipping rings around us in a show of aquatic acrobatics. Each guided snorkel session served up bucket-list marine life: black- and white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, octopuses and darting shoals of sturgeon fish. For those wanting to see the Galapagos in style, Hermes' five-star services will be a welcome addition to the fleet. Sadly, though, counter to what Huxley hoped, there was no evidence to show that the journey had improved me. ‘I had no idea there was anything like this in the world!': meet the species recently discovered by scientists

It's not often that you discover a new species in your lunch spot. But for Lou Jost, co-founder and director of Fundación EcoMinga, that's exactly what happened. Everything from a new species of glass frog to a new mammal genus have been discovered on the Ecuadorian reserves that Fundación EcoMinga protects with funding from the conservation charity World Land Trust – but it all began with orchids. 'When you're sitting still, you observe things much more carefully,' says Jost. 'I saw all these leaves that I recognised as orchid leaves.' Turning them over, he found flowers that 'looked more like insects', counting five different orchid species without leaving his spot. 'It opened my eyes to the biodiversity of these orchids,' says Jost, and on a later hike to the same area, he spotted something strangely beautiful he'd never seen before – a brand new species. 'I named it Lepanthes elytrifera, which means 'carrying beetle wing covers', because the centre of the flower looks like a pair of shiny beetle wing covers.' But to Jost, who'd been fascinated with orchids since childhood, even growing a DIY rainforest in his basement, it was obvious that this new species was threatened. 'From where I was sitting, I could hear the sound of chainsaws.' Over the next decade, while Jost mapped out the patterns of orchid biodiversity, he felt an obligation to ensure the survival of these areas and their endemic species. He approached the local government and the body responsible for managing Ecuador's national parks, but 'kept running into brick walls'. So, in 2005, he and a group of Ecuadorian and international scientists and conservationists founded Fundación EcoMinga, with 'some small reserves and small donations'. But scaling up was an issue – until World Land Trust stepped in, when he approached it for funding to protect 2,000 hectares (4,900 acres) of vital habitat. 'Almost immediately, they agreed,' he says. World Land Trust has funded the protection of 29,036 hectares of land in Ecuador through its partners. EcoMinga alone manages 10 reserves in the upper Río Pastaza watershed, a biological corridor linking the northern and southern ranges of Ecuador's eastern Andes. There, it has discovered nearly 100 species, almost all of which are found nowhere else but the watershed. EcoMinga also manages two more reserves in the Chocó region of north-west Ecuador, and it is here that one of its recent mammalian discoveries took place. Rodents are often overlooked in science, says Jost. But Ecuadorian mammologist Jorge Brito knows only too well the hidden biodiversity they represent. Alongside EcoMinga's executive director, Javier Robayo, and 'highly trained, highly motivated guards from Baños de Agua Santa', Brito led an expedition to the Dracula reserve in the Chocó region, near the Colombian border, to investigate the amphibians, reptiles and mammals in the area. As a result of the expedition, the researchers identified a new species of rodent. 'We knew that what we found was probably a new species,' he says. But it was the morphology of its teeth that led the team to understand they had actually discovered a new rodent genus, Pattonimus. 'Even globally, that's quite rare.' Discoveries on World Land Trust-funded reserves include the Norma Ewing's rain frog, identified last year by EcoMinga's reserve manager, Juan Pablo Reyes-Puig,during a research expedition to Cerro Candelaria. And announced this year, the luminous green Maycú torrent frog, discovered where the Andes meets the Amazon in the Maycú reserve by a team of researchers. In 2020, the ethereal, translucent-skinned mindo glass frog was also rediscovered in EcoMinga's Rio Manduriacu reserve, seen just twice in the wild since it was first described in 1975. The reserve, originally intended to protect the critically endangered Tandayapa Andean toad, is now a breeding ground for these otherworldly creatures. Another is the scorpion species discovered during a community patrol by Asociación Ecológica de San Marcos de Ocotepeque in western Honduras, and named Centruroides lenca in honour of the Indigenous Lenca people. 'It is really hard to discover new species … but not as hard as I thought,' says Jost, recalling his favourite find on an expedition to a remote, little-studied mountain in the World Land Trust-protected Machay reserve. 'It's a very special mountain, very steep – almost nobody has ever been,' says Jost, who was ascending with a team when a guard named Darwin Riccardo came running with something in his hands. 'A big black frog with fluorescent dots all over it. Such a crazy frog. I had no idea there was anything like this in the world!' Riccardo had spotted it inside a bromelia plant. 'It still blows me away!' And as for the name of that thrilling spotted frog? Hyloscirtus sethmacfarlanei, named in honour of the actor Seth MacFarlane, who also works to halt the loss of rainforest habitat. 'You can do a lot with new species. They're attention-getters. There are actually websites that track things that are named after David Attenborough,' he says, adding that he, too, has named a plant after Attenborough, a World Land Trust patron – the Blakea attenboroughii. 'I often name species after people or communities,' says Jost, recalling how an orchid named after the city of Tulcán in Ecuador made the news. 'The city printed colourful children's books with pictures of all the fancy frogs, birds and plants, and the garbage collectors handed them out,' he says. Tulcán even painted its municipal vehicle to match. Sharing that curiosity and pride on a global scale could be a tonic for anyone feeling despondent about the loss of natural habitats. Jost insists there's room for optimism. 'Every significant ecosystem in the Río Pastaza watershed of Ecuador is now at least partly preserved by these reserves.' And EcoMinga's reserves are growing, protected rigorously by World Land Trust's Keepers of the Wild rangers. 'All of the World Land Trust's partners are an inspiration for the world. The diversity here is so high that you can't just pay attention to one area,' says Jost. 'You've got to have one decentralised system of partners focusing on different animals and plants and areas – and that's what World Land Trust does. And it's working.' Graham Watkins: Runaway tourism threatens the future of the Galapagos Islands

Very few places in the world have influenced humanity as much as the Galapagos Islands, and they have a pivotal year ahead. 2009 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species, and the 50th anniversaries of the foundation of the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Park. But for all their importance, the islands are still under threat. Today, this extraordinary archipelago, which has inspired countless visitors, is the premier natural environment in the world: one of the last well-conserved tropical archipelagos we have, and home to numerous unique species. Since Charles Darwin's 1835 visit and his use of the islands to illustrate evolution and adaptive radiation in the Origin of Species, the islands have been the focus of additional important research in understanding natural selection. But the islands were long host to whalers and colonists too, who left a series of legacies. These include the decimation of tortoise populations and the introduction of many new species that have wreaked havoc on the native flora and fauna. The islands are better conserved today than they were 100 years ago. Unfortunately, the runaway development of tourism means that the Galapagos are at risk again. Economic growth in the islands has drawn immigrants and increased the risks of new and increasingly dangerous, invasive species arriving. Resolving this problem will require strengthening governance, ensuring sustainable tourism, developing an island culture and continuing to restore the islands. The solutions will be led by the people of Ecuador and will necessarily involve ensuring the standard of living of Galapagos residents. But it is the co-responsibility of the world to support the government of Ecuador in the process. We can conserve Galapagos, but only through the concerted actions of all of the actors. If we can achieve sustainability, the value to the world will extend well beyond saving one of the last remaining natural treasures, to being a model for sustainable societies everywhere.
