Joe Burrow to sit in Bengals' preseason finale after controversial play sparked outrage
The Bengals' star quarterback will not play in the third and final preseason game Saturday against the Colts following the polarizing decision to play Burrow for three drives in the second game Monday.
Burrow left himself exposed while trying to scramble on one play, and three Commanders players sacked him in a vicious hit that had some fans questioning the team's decision.
'I'm not anticipating any starters playing,' Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Wednesday.
'I haven't talked in depth with the players about this third game. I've talked to Joe, I haven't specifically told these guys they're not playing, but they're not playing.'

Taylor opted to change Cincinnati's preseason plan this year after the team started 0-2 in each of the last three seasons, which has led to two straight years without postseason play.
Instead of keeping Burrow sidelined like other teams do with their star quarterbacks, such as Buffalo with Josh Allen, the Bengals have had their $275 million man playing in exhibition games.
Burrow played in two series in the preseason opener against the Eagles on Aug. 7, and then three Monday against Washington, including the controversial play.

Instead of sliding, Burrow attempted to extend a play on third down and ultimately had three defenders take him to the turf.
'Go down, Joe, it's August,' ESPN announcer Joe Buck said.
Taylor did not enjoy watching that play, but noted the preseason is intended for those types of moments so players can learn.
'It's one of those things for him, that's what preseason football's for. Do I love seeing that? No, I don't,' Taylor said. 'But, at the same time, he's out there learning what he can and can't do and we've seen him get out of that stuff before and that's why he's playing in the preseason, for a chance to feel what it's like to feel in a game and there's times where he gets out of that and gets a big play and times where we're in a tough spot at the two-yard line. He gets a chance to feel all that and learn from it.
'I think it was three good series that we'll continue to learn from.'

This season will be a critical one for the Bengals, who have disappointed the past two years following back-to-back runs to the Super Bowl and AFC Championship in the 2021 and 2022 playoffs, respectively.
The Bengals have star players in Burrow and receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, but a faulty defense has failed them.
That porous defense is a major reason why ESPN analyst Ryan Clark said the team is 'absolutely' wasting Burrow's prime years.
Cincinnati opens the season Sept. 7 at Cleveland.
'I feel good about where our team's at right now,' Taylor said. 'I'm excited to get through the preseason and go play games because I see what I see in practice. So, I'm just really excited from top to bottom about a lot of the players we have.'

4 Chargers players with most on the line vs. 49ers
The regular season is just a couple of weeks away, which means the preseason is nearly over. This weekend's preseason finale against the 49ers still brings plenty of storylines to look forward to. The 53-man roster will be finalized soon, meaning this weekend's game is a big one for those competing to make the team. Let's look at what four Chargers players have the most on the line against the 49ers on Saturday. QB Taylor Heinicke Heinicke has seemingly lost the backup job to Trey Lance over the last month. While he still has an outside shot at that No. 2 job, just making the 53-man roster is more important at this point. The team could very well opt to carry just two quarterbacks, which would all but end Heinicke's tenure in Los Angeles. We'll see how he performs and who officially takes over that role as the primary backup to quarterback Justin Herbert. CB Ja'Sir Taylor It's been a back-and-forth few months for Taylor. He's spent all three years of his NFL career with the Chargers, but he was tabbed as a possible cut candidate heading into the summer. Taylor has had plenty of bright moments in training camp, but then some troubles in the preseason. He has experience both at cornerback and on special teams, which bodes well for his 53-man roster chances. With a strong performance in the preseason finale, he may be able to solidify his spot. S Tony Jefferson You'll notice a common theme here, with three seasoned veterans, all of whom were with the team in 2024. The safety features three locks with Jefferson and rookie RJ Mickens, then fighting to make the 53-man roster. Both of them deserve to make the team, it's just a matter of whether the team wants to keep five safeties or not. Jefferson still brings some value on special teams in addition to his veteran leadership. He played 224 defensive snaps as well in 2024, so he still has some game left at safety. EDGE Kyle Kennard This summer hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows for Kennard, the fourth-round pick out of South Carolina. Presumed to be the fourth edge rusher behind Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree, Kennard has failed to make his presence known. He has missed all preseason games except for the Hall of Fame Game due to an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, Caleb Murphy has been chipping away to secure the role. Assuming that he is healthy enough to play in the preseason finale, Kennard must deliver a solid performance to try to earn it.

Chicago Blackhawks agree with Frank Nazar on a 7-year extension worth $46.13 million
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with forward Frank Nazar on a seven-year extension worth $46.13 million. The team announced the contract Thursday. Nazar will count $6.59 million against the salary cap from when it starts in the 2026-27 NHL season through 2033. Nazar had 26 points in 53 games last season at ages 20 and 21. He helped the U.S. win the world hockey championship for the first time since 1933 and was invited to the Olympic orientation camp later this month as a candidate to play in Milan. 'Frank elevated his game last season and has proven himself to be one of the top young talents in the league,' general manager Kyle Davidson said. 'He drives play using his elite speed and playmaking abilities, creating problems for opponents and opportunities for teammates every night. Frank is an integral piece of our team, and we're thrilled to have him with us for the next eight seasons.' Nazar is expected to be part of Chicago's long-term future along with 2023 No. 1 pick Connor Bedard and young defenseman Artyom Levshunov. ___

Jeff McNeil sits with a sore right shoulder in the latest nagging injury for the Mets
WASHINGTON (AP) — Jeff McNeil has a sore right shoulder, the latest nagging injury for the New York Mets as they try to recover from a late-summer swoon. McNeil was out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale at Washington, with Brett Baty starting at second base. One of the Mets' most consistent hitters, McNeil went 4 for 8 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs in the previous two games against the Nationals. 'It doesn't bother him to swing the bat. It's just more the throwing,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. The shoulder problem began late last week, Mendoza said, which is why McNeil started at designated hitter on Saturday and Sunday. Brandon Nimmo was also out of the lineup Thursday with the stiff neck that forced him to leave Wednesday night's game in the second inning. Tyrone Taylor started in left field. 'We didn't see much improvement overnight,' Mendoza said of Nimmo. McNeil has experience in left, but the shoulder problem means he's not an option there for now. New York's series at Washington began Tuesday with the news that catcher Francisco Alvarez has a sprained ligament in his right thumb that will require surgery. Alvarez is hoping he can play through the pain after a stint on the injured list. Backup catcher Luis Torrens had a rough night Wednesday that included getting hit in his receiving hand by a bat on a catcher's interference play, but Mendoza said Thursday that Torrens was 'fine.' The Mets had a three-game winning streak before Wednesday night's loss, but the team with the biggest payroll in the majors is just 5-15 since July 28. New York entered Thursday trailing Philadelphia by 6 1/2 games in the NL East and was one game ahead of Cincinnati for the final wild-card spot. ___
