MK Stalin Launches Poll Campaign, Says AIADMK "Fully Under" BJP's Control

The temple town of Madurai, the political capital of Tamil Nadu, crackled with political energy as the Chief Minister and DMK President, M.K. Stalin, formally launched the party's campaign for the 2026 elections at the general council meet.
Addressing a gathering of party leaders and cadre, Mr Stalin issued a clear call, demanding immediate grassroots mobilisation. "Enrol at least 30% of voters as DMK members within the next two months," he instructed booth committees, setting an ambitious target to solidify the party's base.
Mr Stalin framed the upcoming battle as a defence of Tamil Nadu's identity and progress against the key opposition party, AIADMK, that revived ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He launched a fierce attack on the rival AIADMK, declaring it "fully under BJP's control," accusing its leader, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), of seeking to bring the entire state under Delhi's saffron influence.
Amit Shah frequently visits Tamil Nadu," Mr Stalin noted pointedly, delivering his signature rebuke: "As I said earlier, no Shah can rule Tamil Nadu. It is always out of control for Delhi."
Mr Stalin alleged that if the BJP-AIADMK alliance wins, then communal clashes, regressive ideologies hindering education and industry, and a relentless assault on Tamil culture through Hindi imposition will occur.
"They would drown us with regressive ideas...erase Tamil Nadu's identity," he alleged, urging cadre to proactively take this message to the people, countering rival narratives on social media and opinion polls. "Our truth should reach before their lies," he asserted, emphasising the need to stay ahead of the political narrative.
Mr Stalin highlighted the strength of the DMK-led alliance, calling allies "our strength for successive victories."
He asked his party cadre to adopt a "give and take" approach, mirroring his politeness and consideration in dealing with alliance partners. The campaign's core message, he stated, must be the DMK's "Everything for Everyone" policy, showcasing their governance which he claimed rescued Tamil Nadu from the "depths" of AIADMK rule, achieving top growth rankings despite alleged economic crippling by the Centre, gubernatorial interference to create obstacles, and erosion of state rights.
The DMK General Council echoed his stance, passing resolutions demanding the Centre abandon population-based delimitation (fearing reduced TN representation), withdraw the Waqf Amendment Act, release withheld funds, cease alleged misuse of investigative agencies, and halt Hindi imposition. They slammed the "divisive Hindutva politics" and centralisation of power while demanding an expedited caste-based census. The battle lines for 2026 were decisively drawn.
Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswamy today denied these allegations. He said, "It is DMK that has betrayed Tamil Nadu. They were in power in Delhi for 16 years, but they did nothing about bringing education under the state list, but when out of power, they raise this".
BJP state Chief Nainar Nagendran said, "Even Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman has explained how the state has received more funds when compared to the UPA regime. How long would you enact this drama?", he added.
The DMK has countered the argument in the past, saying the right way to compare would be against the then GDP and present GDP to find out how much the state gets.

Elcot park techies seek better lighting, bus trips
Madurai: IT professionals working at the Elcot IT Park at Ilanthaikulam near Mattuthavani have urged the authorities to improve infrastructure and safety measures in and around Pandi Kovil ring road, citing poor lighting and lack of public transport. These concerns were raised at a meeting with commercial taxes minister P Moorthy on Tuesday, when he visited the park. The employees highlighted the urgent need for shuttle services linking the IT park to major transit points like Mattuthavani and Periyar bus stands. "It is difficult to return home safely after night shifts, especially for women. Many hesitate to ride two-wheelers at night due to poor lighting," said M Shanmuga Priya, a team lead at Chella Software. Representatives from HCL added that they were willing to install LED streetlights around TIDEL Park area if permission was granted. The minister assured the employees that he would coordinate with TNSTC to initiate a shuttle route but the service should not cause losses to the transport corporation and have to be used regularly. On allowing companies to install LED lights, he said he would speak to the corporation commissioner. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan told TOI that the concerned stretch of Pandi Kovil ring road falls under Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRIDC), which collects tolls for its maintenance. "However, we will coordinate with the district administration to find a workable solution for the lighting and safety concerns," she said. Balamurugan Palani, president of Madurai Infrastructure and Development Group, proposed a comprehensive bus route connecting Ilanthaikulam and Vadapalanji Elcot IT parks. It could pass through Mattuthavani, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Pandi Kovil Junction, Gomathipuram, Aavin Junction, Anna Bus Stand, Goripalayam, Arapalayam, Kochadai, Achampattu, Virattipattu, Nagamalai Pudukottai, and end at Vadapalanji SEZ campus. He stressed the need for increased patrolling, CCTV surveillance, and other safety measures to protect women techies commuting at odd hours. Wrapping up the session, minister Moorthy said the Elcot IT Park project, initiated by former chief minister M Karunanidhi, helped generate local employment and transform Madurai into an emerging IT hub. With the upcoming TIDEL Park in Mattuthavani, the region is poised for further growth, he added. Earlier, the minister paid tributes to Karunanidhi at his statue at the park, on his birth anniversary.

Not Noddy, Tom & Pingu, but ‘Adu, Sanju & Teju'—BJP wants Mumbaikar penguins to have Marathi names
'We are not saying anything about the names of penguins that have come from the foreign countries. But, these three penguins are born in Mumbai, on our soil,' Nitin Bankar, who heads the BJP's Byculla unit, said to ThePrint. The idea behind the demand is that the three chicks were born on Mumbai's soil and must not have foreign names. Their names should be rooted in Marathi. Mumbai BJP leaders also held a protest outside the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as the Byculla Zoo, Monday to emphasise their demand. Mumbai: Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Mumbai unit want three baby penguins born in the city in March this year to be renamed from Noddy, Tom and Pingu to 'Adu, Sanju and Teju.' 'In Mumbai, it is compulsory for all shops and establishments, too, to display their names in Marathi. The state government has said all official communication within the government should be in Marathi. The Centre has accorded Marathi classical language statues. So, why can't the three penguins have a Marathi name?' Bankar said. He added, Adu, Sanju and Teju are name suggestions that he has put forth to the BMC. The BJP's demand comes ahead of local elections expected to be held across the state, including in Mumbai for the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), this year. 'But, his second in command promised us to find a solution to the issue in 10 days. If they don't change the name in 10 days, we will have an even bigger protest and have the zoo shut down,' Bankar said. The BJP leader said he first wrote a letter to the zoo authorities on 30 April, 'within 3 days of the naming ceremony of the baby penguins'. When there was no response to his letter, he wrote another one a month later on 30 May. 'I have not received anything from the zoo authorities on my letter,' Bankar said. Local BJP leaders, under Bankar's leadership, have also been protesting the branding of the zoo on all social media platforms as 'Mumbai Zoo' when its officially named after Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji's mother. The penguins are kept in an 1,800 sq ft fortress enclosure with CCTVs, rocky caves, ice, and artificial ponds. The Byculla zoo in Mumbai has had penguins as one of its star attractions since 2016, when the BMC got eight Humboldt penguins to the zoo from South Korea. The penguins were all named after popular cartoon characters—Donald, Daisy, Popeye, Olive, Flipper, Bubble, Mr Molt and Dory. Dory died a few months after coming to Mumbai due to a bacterial infection. Penguins in captivity are monogamous and choose a lifetime partner. Mr Molt, the youngest male among the eight Humboldts, and Flipper, the oldest female, are the most popular pair in the zoo. They had the first penguin baby in Mumbai in 2018. The chick, born on 15 August, however, could not survive and died within a week. But, since then, the colony has only expanded. In 2021, a new chick was born who was named Oreo. Then gradually the penguins reproduced some more to add new members to their family—Nemo, Dora, Siri, Flash, Bingo, Alexa, Coco, Stella, Jerry and so on. Other animals born in the Byculla zoo are mostly given Indian names. For instance, two tiger cubs born around the same time as Nero, Siri and Dora were named Jai and Rudra.
