On drawing board, new roads to bypass eway gridlocks, cut travel time from Gurgaon to Delhi

Time of India25-07-2025
Gurgaon: If the govt has its way, a series of proposed road projects will help streamline commuting between Delhi and the city, reducing travel time for thousands of commuters. These projects include construction of a direct road from Gurgaon bus stand to Dwarka Expressway (Old Najafgarh Road) via CRPF Chowk, a stretch from Rajiv Chowk to Signature Towers via Baba Prakaspuri Chowk and Old Railway Road and an elevated road over Sirhaul border.
City MLA Mukesh Sharma recently met Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking support to construct these roads. "Presented three key demands to the union road transport minister, who took them seriously and immediately issued directives to the highways authorities," said Sharma.
He also said the proposed direct road connectivity from Gurgaon bus stand to Dwarka Expressway via CRPF Chowk and Kamdhenu Gaushala would provide faster access to sectors 4, 5, Ashok Vihar and Palam Vihar among other residential areas.
On June 3, MLA Sharma, accompanied by MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya and other officials, had conducted a site inspection to explore reconstruction possibilities. This new route is expected to alleviate congestion for daily commuters, facilitating smoother travel.

Another proposal involves construction of a road from Rajiv Chowk to Signature Tower via Baba Prakashpuri Chowk and Old Railway Road. This stretch would connect busy market areas and major intersections, thereby reducing traffic strain on these zones.

Decongestion of Delhi-Gurgaon border at Sirhaul was also a topic of discussion as severe congestion is frequently reported at the city's entry point near Ambience Mall for traffic moving between Delhi and Gurgaon. To tackle this, the minister was requested to construct an elevated road by NHAI to ensure smooth traffic flow on NH-8.
Sharma said Gadkari promptly issued directives to the departments. "Traffic snarls are a crucial aspect of urban development," he said.
The Union road transport ministry has already announced it will explore the possibility of building an elevated road from Mahipalpur to Manesar as an upper deck of Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway after a meeting with Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh in 2022.

US President Trump's envoy Steve Witkofs likely to visit Russia this week

The coming week could bring an important moment in the war between Russia and Ukraine, as US President Donald Trump's deadline for the Kremlin to reach a peace deal approaches — or it could simply melt away. US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff was expected in Moscow in the middle of this week, just before Trump's Friday deadline for the Kremlin to stop the killing or face potentially severe economic penalties from Washington. Previous Trump promises, threats and cajoling have failed to yield results., and the stubborn diplomatic stalemate will be hard to clear away. Meanwhile, Ukraine is losing more territory on the front line, although there is no sign of a looming collapse of its defences. Trump envoy is expected at the Kremlin Witkoff was expected to land in the Russian capital on Wednesday or Thursday, according to Trump, following his trip to Israel and Gaza. 'They would like to see (Witkoff),' Trump said Sunday of the Russians. 'They've asked that he meet so we'll see what happens.' Trump, exasperated that Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn't heeded his calls to stop bombing Ukrainian cities, a week ago moved up his ultimatum to impose additional sanctions on Russia as well as introduce secondary tariffs targeting countries that buy Russian oil, including China and India. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that officials are happy to meet with Trump's envoy. 'We are always glad to see Mr Witkoff in Moscow,' he said. 'We consider (talks with Witkoff) important, substantive and very useful.' Trump is not sure sanctions will work Trump said Sunday that Russia has proved to be 'pretty good at avoiding sanctions.' 'They're wily characters,' he said of the Russians. The Kremlin has insisted that international sanctions imposed since its February 2022 invasion of its neighbour have had a limited impact. Ukraine insists the sanctions are taking their toll on Moscow's war machine and wants Western allies to ramp them up. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday urged the United States, Europe and other nations to impose stronger secondary sanctions on Moscow's energy, trade and banking sectors. Trump's comments appeared to signal he doesn't have much hope that sanctions will force Putin's hand. The secondary sanctions also complicate Washington's relations with China and India, who stand accused of helping finance Russia's war effort by buying its oil. Since taking office in January, Trump has found that stopping the war is harder than he perhaps imagined. Senior American officials have warned that the US could walk away from the conflict if peace efforts make no progress. Putin shows no signs of making concessions The diplomatic atmosphere has become more heated as Trump's deadline approaches. Putin announced last Friday that Russia's new hypersonic missile, the Oreshnik, has entered service. The Russian leader has hailed its capabilities, saying its multiple warheads that plunge to a target at speeds of up to Mach 10 cannot be intercepted. They are so powerful, he said, that the use of several of them in one conventional strike could be as devastating as a nuclear attack. Also, one of Putin's top lieutenants warned that the Ukraine war could nudge Russia and the US into armed conflict. Trump responded to what he called the 'highly provocative statements' by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev by ordering the repositioning of two US nuclear submarines. Putin has repeated the same message throughout the war: He will only accept a settlement on his terms and will keep fighting until they're met. The war is killing thousands of troops and civilians Russia's relentless pounding of urban areas behind the front line have killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations. It has pushed on with that tactic despite Trump's public calls for it to stop over the past three months. On the 1,000-kilometre front line, Russia's bigger army has made slow and costly progress. It is carrying out a sustained operation to take the eastern city of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub whose fall could open the way for a deeper drive into Ukraine. Ukraine has developed technology that has allowed it to launch long-range drone attacks deep inside Russia. In its latest strike it hit an oil depot near Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi, starting a major fire.

Currency watch: Rupee drops 48 paise to 87.66 against dollar; FII outflows, tariff worries drag

AI image The rupee plunged 48 paise to close at 87.66 against the US dollar on Monday, weighed down by persistent foreign fund outflows, global trade concerns, and rising dollar demand from oil importers. The Indian currency opened at 87.21 and touched an intraday low of 87.73 at the interbank foreign exchange market before settling 48 paise lower from its previous close of 87.18. On Friday, the rupee had staged a sharp rebound of 47 paise, PTI reported. Forex traders attributed the pressure to renewed fears over a wider trade disruption after US President Donald Trump's tariff measures resurfaced. Demand from oil marketing companies also added to the rupee's weakness. 'We expect the rupee to remain weak amid uncertainty over the India-US trade deal and foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows,' said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, commodities and currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. 'However, weakness in the US dollar amid chatter over rate cut expectations in the US due to weak economic data may support the rupee at lower levels,' he added. Choudhary expects the USD-INR pair to trade in a range of 87.40 to 88. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bogota: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Traders are now eyeing factory order data from the US and the Reserve Bank of India's upcoming monetary policy. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, began its three-day meeting on Monday. The outcome of the rate decision will be announced on Wednesday. Brent crude futures fell 1.06% to $68.93 per barrel as OPEC+ confirmed a production hike from September, while softening demand expectations in the US and tariff risks also weighed. The US dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against six major currencies, was down 0.37% at 98.77. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said the rupee's fall was also driven by foreign fund withdrawals and liquidity adjustments linked to a maturing $5 billion forex swap conducted by the RBI. "The forward premium rates also jumped to reflect the potential interest rate differential between the US and India after Friday's jobs data," he noted. US non-farm payroll data showed the economy added just 74,000 jobs in July, well below expectations of 106,000. The June figure was sharply revised to 14,000 from the earlier estimate of 147,000 — increasing pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. Despite the currency weakness, Indian equities ended higher. The BSE Sensex gained 418.81 points to close at 81,018.72, while the Nifty climbed 157.40 points to 24,722.75. FIIs remained net sellers, pulling out Rs 2,566.51 crore from domestic equities on Monday, as per exchange data.
