
Mitchell Tech hazing policy set for review by Mitchell school board
Jun. 8—MITCHELL — The Mitchell Board of Education will get a look at a proposed Mitchell Technical College policy meant to address hazing at the school.
The board will review the policy at its next regular meeting on Monday, June 9. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Room 10 at the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy.
According to the agenda notes for the meeting, Mitchell Technical College Policy 120 would help bring the school into compliance with national law. The new policy will address requirements of the Stop Campus Hazing Act, and it must be adopted by the board by June 23 for the school to remain in compliance.
"The Stop Campus Hazing Act...was signed into law by President Biden on Dec. 23, 2024 and mandates that institutions of higher education participating in federal student aid must report hazing incidents in their Annual Security Reports, implement hazing policies and publish information related to hazing incidents in a Campus Hazing Transparency Report," Joe Childs, superintendent for the Mitchell School District, wrote in his agenda notes on the subject.
The policy will undergo a first reading at the June 9 meeting. It must gain approval over two readings to become official policy.

Also at the meeting, the board is expected to consider the following personnel items:
* The new certified hire of Sydney Pike, 2nd grade teacher at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary, $53,260, effective 2025-26 school year.
* The new classified hires of Rachela Dirksen, Title VI tutor, ISS monitor, $19 per hour, 8 hours daily, effective Aug. 13 and Abigail Guenthner, begindergarten teaching assistant at L.B. Williams Elementary, $19 per hour, 7.75 hours daily, effective Aug. 13.
* The new Mitchell Technical College summer adjunct hires of Annika Russel-Manke, ACCT 221 Quickbooks, 3 credits, $2,700; Annika Russell-Manke, BUS 122 E-Commerce, 3 credits, $2,700; Ashley Alarcon, RAD 156 Intro to CT, 2 credits, $1,800; Julie Gross, ENGL 110 Workplace Communications, 3 credits, $2,700; Crystal Freund, SOC 150 Social Problems, 3 credits, $2,700; Crystal Freund, SPCM 101 Fundamentals of Speech, 3 credits, $2,700; Nathaniel Raak, MATH 103 Mathematical Reasoning, 3 credits, $2,700; Ryan Van Zee, BUS 170 Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, 3 credits, $2,700; Shirlyce Weisser, MOP 212 Elecronic Medical Records, 3 credits, $2,700 and Shirlyce Weisser, MOP 230 Medical Office Administration, 3 credits, $2,700. All adjunct hires are effective for the 2025 summer semester.

All are effective for the 2025 summer semester.
The board is also expected to consider the following agenda items at the June 9 meeting:
* Consideration to hold a public hearing on a waiver to allow high school credit for Algebra I and Spanish I and to approve both waivers.
* Consideration to approve a resolution to declare elected members of the school board.
* Consideration to approve the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors.
* Review of the 2025-26 K-12 budget.
* Hear board member reports.
* Hear the superintendent report.
* Hear public commentary.

Huawei chips are one generation behind US, but ‘no need to worry', says CEO
Huawei Technologies' chips are one generation behind those of US peers but the firm is finding ways to improve performance through methods such as cluster computing, Chinese state media quoted CEO Ren Zhengfei as saying on Tuesday. The chipmaker invests 180 billion yuan (R444 billion) in research annually and sees promise in compound chips - chips made from multiple elements - Ren said in an interview with the People's Daily newspaper of the governing Communist Party. There is "no need to worry about the chip problem", Ren said, addressing concerns stemming from US export controls. The article, published on the front page of the newspaper, come as top US and Chinese officials are set to resume trade talks for a second day in London where topics such US tech restrictions on China are expected to be discussed. Since 2019, a slew of US export curbs, aimed at curbing China's technological and military advancements, have restricted Huawei and other Chinese firms from accessing high-end chips and the equipment needed to produce them from abroad. Ren's comments are the first ever from him or Huawei about the company's advanced chipmaking efforts, which have become a flashpoint in US-China tensions. Huawei is just one of many Chinese chipmakers, Ren said in the interview, adding: "The United States has exaggerated Huawei's achievements. Huawei is not that great. We have to work hard to reach their evaluation." "Our single chip is still behind the US by a generation. We use mathematics to supplement physics, non-Moore's law to supplement Moore's law and cluster computing to supplement single chips and the results can also achieve practical conditions. Nvidia's AI chips are more powerful than Huawei's but the company has been barred by Washington from selling its most sophisticated chips to China, causing it to lose significant market share to Huawei. In April, Huawei launched "AI CloudMatrix 384", a system that links 384 Ascend 910C chips in a cluster that companies can use to train AI models, which has been described by analysts as able to outperform Nvidia's GB200 NVL72 system on some metrics. Dylan Patel, founder of semiconductor research group SemiAnalysis, said in an article that month that it meant that Huawei and China now had AI system capabilities that could beat Nvidia. Nvidia and the US commerce department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ren's remarks. Ren also said about a third of Huawei's annual research spending went to theoretical research while the rest was spent on product research and development. "Without theory, there will be no breakthroughs, and we will not catch up with the United States."

Dozens of anti-ICE protesters busted at Trump Tower after lobby takeover: ‘Bring them home!'
About two dozen anti-ICE protesters swarmed the lobby of Trump Tower in Manhattan Monday, and were busted after refusing to leave. The mostly grey-haired crowd sat together on the ground, chanting, 'Bring them back! Bring them home!' as NYPD cops descended on the Fifth Avenue skyscraper around 1 p.m. The group called for the release of inmates from the notorious hellhole prison CECOT in El Salvador – where migrants deported from the US, and even 'dangerous' American citizens convicted of heinous crimes are held in overcrowded cells. 'We are demanding that the administration bring back everyone from CECOT to the United States, release them ICE custody, return them to their homes and families and allow them their day in court,' demanded a woman leading the protest. The NYPD confirmed that the protesters were given multiple orders to disperse from the lobby, but refused to comply. An audio recording with the message, 'This is the New York City Police Department. You are occupying these premises unlawfully and without permission. I am ordering you to leave these premises now. If you refuse to leave, you may be subject to arrest,' played before police began placing the crew in zip-tie handcuffs. Sources say 24 demonstrators were rounded up by the NYPD. Charges were not immediately filed.

Nearly two dozen arrested outside Manhattan ICE facility after protests erupt into chaos
Nearly two dozen people were busted as protests erupted Wednesday night after ICE arrested multiple migrants at a Lower Manhattan courthouse hours earlier, cops said. Twenty-three people were taken into custody as activists rallied outside the U.S. Immigration Court on Varick Street near West Houston Street, according to police. Eighteen were released with summonses, and the status of the five others was not immediately known. The arrested demonstrators were attempting to block the path of the two vans that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were using to transport the detained migrants, Hell Gate reported. The crowd also clashed with authorities over the barricades set up to keep them back, according to CBS New York. The protesters were outraged after two dozen masked, plainclothes officers gathered Wednesday afternoon in the lobby of 26 Federal Plaza, where they corralled at least six migrants as well as a Queens pastor who tried to intervene, according to a report in The City. The six men and one woman were spotted as agents carted them — some in handcuffs — back into an elevator they had just come out of, the outlet reported. ICE spokesperson Marie Ferguson told The City that the operation was in line with the Trump administration's push for 'expedited removal' of those who had illegally entered the country over the last two years under the Biden administration. 'ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been,' Ferguson said. 'If they have a valid credible fear claim, they will continue in immigration proceedings, but if no valid claim is found, aliens will be subject to a swift deportation.' But a member of the crowd gathered on Varick Street told CBS he was astonished by the scene. 'I've never seen anything like this,' said the man, who only provided his first name, Ben. 'I've been working here for a couple years and I've never seen this many agents, let alone agents dressed in plain clothes, wearing masks, pulling people out of line. It's totally out of the ordinary.' Meanwhile on Thursday, at the City Council's Fiscal Year 2026 executive budget hearing, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the NYPD prohibited by city law 'to participate or assist in civil immigration enforcement, and we do not.' 'We have been very clear and consistent on this, and our officers understand that this is a red line we cannot cross,' the top cop said. 'At the same time, we will continue to target criminals, regardless of their immigration status.' 'Some have asked whether we should reconsider our cooperation with federal agencies on criminal investigations in light of their work with ICE,' Tisch added. 'The short, straight answer to this is no. Working with our federal partners on criminal matters is crucial to the safety of our city.'
