Maestro Musetti carves Tiafoe win to reach French Open semifinals
Italian craftsman Lorenzo Musetti used his full palette of shots to decorate Court Philippe Chatrier with blistering baseline winners, beating American Frances Tiafoe 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-2 to reach the French Open semifinals for the first time on Tuesday. Despite a few muddled moments, the world number seven set up a meeting with either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul of the US as he continues his Renaissance after some soul searching. Musetti, who said he put some order in his mind and game, did not let frustration take the best of him after losing the second set and once he found his groove, there was no stopping him as 15th seed Tiafoe gradually lost the plot, twice arguing with the chair umpire over line calls. He bowed out with yet another routine shot into the net, his 'Big Foe' neck chain dripping with sweat as a testimony of the battle just fought. Lorenzo Musetti carries the one-handed backhand legacy into the #RolandGarros semifinals 💥🎾 — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 3, 2025 'Definitely Frances did not start the way he wanted but today was really complicated, it was so windy and difficult to mange to properly hit the ball,' said Musetti, the only man to reach at least the semifinals of every main clay court event this season. 'The third set was a fight and even if I was a little tired I found the extra energy to win this set and the last set was probably the best set of this match.' Musetti is one of the rare top players using the single-handed backhand, a vintage shot often praised by tennis connoisseurs. 'We are Italian, we are elegant,' he joked. 'Joke aside, I have a little bit of a retro style.' 'Our rivalry is pushing both of us.' It's going to be a blockbuster match-up between Sabalenka and Swiatek in the semifinals 🍿 🎟️ #RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 3, 2025 Earlier, and in front of mostly empty seats around lunchtime four-time champion Iga Swiatek, looking to become the first woman in the professional era to win the title four times in a row, beat Elina Svitolina 6-1 7-5 to set up a clash with world number one Aryna Sabalenka for a place in Saturday's final. The Belarusian ended Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen's 10-match winning streak at Roland Garros with a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory to advance. With the main arena finally almost full, Musetti got off to a strong start, his heavy top spin proving tough to handle for Tiafoe, who dropped serve in the second game. The Italian, however, was not completely flawless and he faced a break point at 4-2, which he saw off thanks to his mesmerising backhand. He sealed the opening set on his opponent's serve when Tiafoe's volley sailed wide. Musetti's game, however, needed some fine-tuning and Tiafoe jumped on the occasion to bank on errors here and there to snatch an early break in the second set. He held serve throughout to level the contest as Musetti seemed to struggle adjusting to the windy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier. Musetti dug deep in the third and played a near-perfect game on Tiafoe's serve to surge 2-1 ahead. A modest second serve met Musetti's powerful cross court return and after trading heavy topspin shots, Tiafoe attempted a crafty drop shot, but the Italian charged forward for a clinical backhand winner on the baseline. The fourth set looked more like a post-match cool-down for Musetti, who would not be distracted by Tiafoe's antics.

'Not the truth' – Gavin Hunt disputes Teko Modise's claims about his 2007 exit from SuperSport United
Former SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt Former SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has disputed Teko Modise's version of events that led to the star midfielder's exit from the Tshwane club. Photo: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers Former SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says he disagrees with Teko Modise's side of the story about how he was sold to Orlando Pirates. A month ago, Modise told the Izinja zeGame podcast that he was sold by SuperSport because he did not fit into Hunt's plans. Modise left SuperSport in 2007, and the club went on to win three consecutive PSL titles. But, according to Hunt, selling the attacking midfielder was not his idea as he was planning to build the team around him. 'I'll sit in the media and I'll listen to Teko talk and he talks the biggest load of nonsense because that is not the truth,' Hunt said when speaking on Apex Sports International. 'We played a pre-season game in Australia he won Man of the Match. I was like 'We're going to build a team around this guy'. We get back and we train for a week or two.

Djokovic beats Norrie to join Nadal in French Open century club
Three-time champion Novak Djokovic roared into the French Open quarterfinals by beating Briton Cameron Norrie 6-2 6-3 6-2 for his 100th match victory at Roland Garros on Monday to join Rafa Nadal in one of sport's most exclusive fraternities. The Serbian's determined performance ensured he became only the second man to win a century of matches at the Parisian Grand Slam after the retired Nadal (112), keeping him on track for a record 25th major at the site of his Olympic gold last year. It also made Roland Garros Djokovic's most successful Grand Slam in terms of match wins, bettering the 99 victories that the has at the Australian Open, though the 38-year-old has lifted the trophy a staggering 10 times at Melbourne Park. Djokovic arrived in Paris having won his 100th tour-level trophy in an otherwise lacklustre year and has not dropped a set in the tournament so far to remind his much younger title rivals of his undiminished hunger for more milestones. No trouble for Djokovic: straight-sets win and a quarterfinal clash with Zverev incoming! 🔥 #RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 2, 2025 He swapped breaks early on with Norrie in the first set but ran the 29-year-old ragged thereafter to win it before shrugging off another wobble on serve in a draining second set to pull away and double his advantage on Court Philippe Chatrier. Djokovic broke to love in the third game of the third set after an unforced error by Norrie and the former world number one never looked back from there to book a last-eight meeting with German third seed Alexander Zverev. Third seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarters after his opponent Tallon Griekspoor retired midway through the second set on Monday. The Dutchman was 6-4 3-0 down when he called for the medic and after a very brief discussion the umpire announced his retirement. It was not immediately clear what kind of injury Griekspoor had suffered. Madison Keys fought off a late challenge from fellow American Hailey Baptiste to book her spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3 7-5 victory. Coco is focused on her year-on-year growth 💯 #RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 2, 2025 The seventh-seeded Keys cantered through the opening set before Baptiste broke for 3-1 in the second, pushing the Australian Open champion to the limit on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Baptiste eventually cracked, allowing her opponent and friend to set up a meeting with second seed Coco Gauff in the next round, ensuring an American presence in the semifinals. 'Hailey is such an amazing player, it was such a tough second set. Today I just had to kind of make as many balls as possible,' said Keys. The 30-year-old could count on the support of new US Billie Jean King Cup captain and former coach Lindsay Davenport plus 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who is sidelined through injury and was also watching from the stands. 'We've a lot of really great players constantly helping us, inspiring us and if we have any questions they're of great help. It's great being friends with such amazing players,' she added. Keys, who only has one clay court title to her name, will face an expert on the red surface in Gauff and knows she will have to take risks to reach the last four in Paris for the second time after making the semis in 2018. 'At the Australian Open I was really brave to go after my shots, that's how I play my best tennis. Sometimes it is hard but usually it pays off,' she added. Local favourite Lois Boisson moved into the quarters with a stunning 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory over world number three Jessica Pegula. Mirra Andreeva became the youngest player to reach back-to-back French quarterfinals in nearly three decades after the gifted Russian teenager overcame Australian 17th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-3 7-5. The powerful 18-year-old has scythed through the women's field at Roland Garros without dropping a set and her fourth-round victory on a sunbathed Court Suzanne Lenglen helped her match the feat of Swiss Martina Hingis between 1997 and 1998.
