Ciaron Maher plotting another Group 1 Queensland Oaks upset with Amplify

Socks Nation 2.0 is about to rock the Group 1 Queensland Oaks. The mystique of Ciaron Maher went to a new level last year when he conjured a training miracle and masterclass to score the Oaks with $101 bolter Socks Nation. Few saw it coming, not even Maher's great mate Tony Gollan who questioned what Socks Nation was even doing in Brisbane when he first saw the travelling filly in his stables. Fast forward 12 months and Maher might have another Socks Nation, ready to land a knockout blow and shock punters. The team of Maher and jockey Ryan Maloney, who stunned everyone with Socks Nation, will combine with Amplify in the Oaks (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Amplify, a $60,000 buy as a weanling and who was sent to country Bathurst to win a race two starts ago, won't go out $101 but after Tuesday's barrier draw was a $34 chance. Maher said there are similarities between Amplify and Socks Nation. It’s an absolute boil over in the @Channel7 Queensland Oaks 😳 SOCKS NATION stays the strongest to gift @cmaherracing his second Group 1 this Queensland Racing Carnival! ðŸ† What a ride @RMaloney_Jockey ðŸ' — RaceQ (@RaceQLD) June 8, 2024 He said a remarkable slice of racing history could be repeated. 'Socks Nation seemed to run fourth in everything she raced in before the Oaks, it didn't matter what race we ran her in she still ran well,' Maher told Racenet. 'Socks Nation to be fair probably shouldn't have been $101, but I wasn't complaining. 'It was a bit of a roll of dice at the trip but she was a consistent, hearty, sort of filly. 'Amplify is not too dissimilar and you can draw some similarities through their toughness and their demeanour. 'I quite like Amplify. 'The Bathurst run was to give her some confidence and she has done well since then.' Maher said in terms of the shape of the Oaks this year, it wasn't too different to the previous year when Socks Nation surged to unexpected glory. David Vandyke's winning machine Philia and Glen Thompson's Australasian Oaks winner Benagil are the fancied ones in betting but Maher thinks it's an open race. • 'You'll see the best of her Saturday': Vandyke's warning to Oaks rivals 'The Oaks shapes up similar to last year, there were a couple of shorter ones in the betting market and then the rest of the field,' Maher said. 'I think it is a relatively open Oaks, again. 'It's all about timing and I think my filly should present well. 'She ran solidly for second in her last start in The Bracelet and that was an indifferent day, the way the track was on the Gold Coast.' Chris Waller's filly Belle Detelle, scratched on race morning of last Saturday's Queensland Derby with a minor foot issue, is set to contest the rescheduled Derby on Saturday rather than the Oaks. Champion trainer Maher feels jockeys may have been premature to withdraw their services from riding on Group 1 Queensland Derby day last Saturday. The races were called off after jockeys complained about visibility, leading to both the Derby and the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup being rescheduled to this Saturday. 'They (jockeys) are certainly very quick to call them off,' Maher said. 'The track was rained on, but it was fine. 'They ran the Kentucky Derby in mud and the jockeys didn't seem to have much of a problem seeing what was going on that day.'

Brian Goorjian to use NBA coaching stint with the New York Knicks in a bid to finalise the Kings' NBL26 roster

Sydney Kings coach Brian Goorjian will use an NBA Summer League coaching stint with the New York Knicks to finalise the Kings' roster for NBL26. CODE Sports can reveal Goorjian has agreed to join the Knicks as an assistant coach for a five-day camp leading up to the Summer League. He will also be on the team's bench during the annual pre-season tournament in Las Vegas from July 10 to 20. Joining forces with New York – a franchise coming off its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 20 years – will give Goorjian a front-row seat to the club's talent pool as he attempts to lock in Sydney's final roster spot. The Kings are keen to sign a back-up big man to add more size to the team's front-court alongside Xavier Cooks and Keli Leaupepe. Sydney CEO Chris Pongrass has already publicly stated the club's desire to lure a 'six-foot-eleven guy with length and size'. The Kings had the fourth-best average rebound numbers in the competition last season, but were seventh in rebounding differential, a crucial part that cost them in their biggest games. Goorjian is desperate to improve this statistic in NBL26 via the help of an experienced big man who can impact the game at both ends of the floor. The legendary mentor's NBA Summer League stint with the Knicks is the perfect chance to survey the best emerging talent in world basketball. The Summer League has proven to be a successful pathway for NBL players to attract interest in recent seasons. Former Melbourne United centre Ariel Hukporti signed a two-year contract with New York following an impressive Summer League stint for the club. Hukporti, who was selected by the Knicks with the 54th pick in the 2024 NBA draft, averaged 8.4 points and 7.2 rebounds in five games for the Knicks at last year's pre-season tournament. Another ex-United star in Jack White signed a two-way deal with the Denver Nuggets in 2022 after a standout Summer League stint with the club. White went on to play 17 NBA games for the Nuggets during the franchise's run to the 2022/23 championship. A cast of NBL players are again expected to feature in this year's NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. While no players are officially locked into stints, the likes of Davo Hickey, Tyrell Harrison and Hyunjung Lee have all indicated a desire to play in the pre-season event. In other news, Pongrass has decided to step down from his role as CEO following seven successful seasons. Pongrass played a vital role in the club's consecutive championships in NBL22 and NBL23 as the team's leading recruiter. He will continue in his current role with Sydney for the next six months – assisting the club's ownership to find a suitable replacement. It's understood Pongrass doesn't have a new job as yet, but he should have no shortage of interest given his NBL success and previous NBA experience as the director of basketball operations at the Memphis Grizzlies.

Dams, mini golf, water park: Buy a whole camp in Far North Qld

Can't afford a house? A camp as Aussie as a kangaroo on a trampoline has hit the market in Far North Queensland. Camp Paterson in Mareeba has been listed for sale by expressions of interest, and sits on 11.19ha of freehold land with a host of activities designed for school camps or corporate bonding retreats. Now, let's talk accommodation. We're not talking about your average swag here but rather platform safari-style cabin tents and separate digs for the teachers and supervisors. There is also a commercial kitchen for whipping up enough tucker to feed the grub to feed the ravenous ankle biters or a slap-up dinner for the more refined palettes of the corporate crowd. But the real ripper is the activities. With five dams on-site, there's more water-based fun than you can shake a didgeridoo at! From an inflatable water park course to swimming, canoeing, fishing, and even raft building, there is no shortage of activities away from the social media screens. Other activities could include orienteering, obstacle courses, damper making, survival shelter building, and mini golf. It's a fair dinkum playground where students can unleash their inner Crocodile Dundee and hone their skills. For those with a bit of entrepreneurial spirit, this is a golden opportunity to keep the good times rolling with a proven and well-regarded business. Listed with Colliers agent Stacey Quaid, expressions of interest close on July 8. 'Buyers have the unique opportunity to continue on operations as an educational and recreational school camp facility or use the substantial existing infrastructure to broaden the current business offerings,' the listing says.
