Inquiry on into allegations levelled by drug peddlers against police officers in special team

The Hindu23-07-2025
An Inspector of police and two sub-inspectors who were part of a special team investigating a cocaine case have been shifted and posted in vacancy reserve category. The action followed the statement of a key peddler Pradeep alias Prado and his associate, during custodial interrogation, in which he alleged that the trio had collected up to ₹50 lakh from actresses for not booking cases against them.
Police investigation began after two groups clashed at a bar in Nungambakkam last month. Eight persons, including an AIADMK functionary Prasad, were arrested in two cases. Investigation revealed that Prasad was involved in offences, including attempt to murder, job fraud and extortion.
Meanwhile, the police unearthed the links between Prasad and a drug cartel, comprising Prado alias Pradeep and his associates, including John, a Ghana national who was operating from Bengaluru. Police said that he had been getting the cocaine from them for the last three years and selling it to his friends, including actor Srikanth. Details of money transactions and electronic evidence have been gathered.
Subsequent to the arrest of actor Srikanth, another actor Krishna, and his associate Jeswir alias Kevin, from Virugambakkam were arrested. Altogether, over 28 persons had been arrested by the Nungambakkam police in about 10 cases for peddling cocaine. Police took the custody of Pradeep alias Prado and another associate Sara Khumma, a Nigerian national, arrested by the Choolaimedu police and a special team interrogated them.
Sources said the duo — Pradeep and Sara — had revealed a drug network and recipients of drugs, including women actors. During interrogation, the accused alleged that a couple of officers in the special team collected the details of actors and had contacted those actors for enquiry. The accused alleged that the officers had struck a deal with the actors and received up to ₹50 lakh for not booking any case or arresting them.
Following the statement of the accused, senior police officers conducted an enquiry with the three officers as to why they had not probed the involvement of the actors allegedly mentioned by the accused during interrogation.
A senior police officer said, 'It was an allegation by the accused. As of now, three officers — an inspector and two sub-inspectors — had been removed from the special team and posted in the vacancy reserve category. Further action will follow after enquiry. Meanwhile, the Vepery police arrested Saurav Chouhan, 38, for allegedly being involved in drug peddling. Police sources said that he received cocaine from a Nigerian national and supplied it to his contacts. On conducting a search at his apartment, the police seized seven grams of cocaine from him.

DMK's responsibility to get centre's approval for Keezhadi excavation report: EPS

SIVAGANGA: AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami emphasised that it is the ruling DMK government's responsibility to secure approval from the central government for the Keezhadi excavation report. He was speaking to the media after visiting the Keezhadi museum in Sivaganga on Wednesday. Palaniswami, who viewed the artefacts displayed in the museum, said that he was unaware of the current explanation provided by the state government regarding the report. He said, 'It is the state government's duty to submit the required information to the centre to secure its approval.' EPS, who interacted with a group of college students at the museum, also highlighted the AIADMK's contributions to the Keezhadi excavations. He said the AIADMK had allocated about Rs 105 crore yearly for the archaeology department for carrying out five phases of excavation from 2014 till 2019. EPS, who is currently on a statewide tour, later also visited Madapuram and met the family members of Ajithkumar, the victim in the recent custodial death case. Addressing reporters, EPS said that the AIADMK legal team had taken the Sivaganga custodial death to the court and it was due to the AIADMK protests, the government recommended handing over the case to the CBI. EPS also alleged that the state government is responsible for Ajithkumar's death. He said, 'Even after knowing that Ajith Kumar was killed by the police, the government delayed action and attempted to dilute the case.'

AIADMK will back govt stand on Keeladi report: EPS

Sivaganga/Ramanathapuram: AIADMK will support the Tamil Nadu govt's stand on ASI official Amarnath Ramakrishna's report on the Keeladi excavation findings, party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has said. He told reporters after visiting the Keeladi museum in Sivaganga district on Wednesday morning that the first phase of archaeological excavations in Keeladi commenced in 2014 when AIADMK was in power. Thousands of artefacts were unearthed during various phases of excavation. It was AIADMK which allocated funds for establishing the on-site museum when late leader J Jayalalithaa was chief minister. In 2018, six samples from Keeladi were sent to a lab in Florida, USA, which confirmed that the Keeladi civilisation dated to the 6th Century BCE. "I cannot comment on the matter pertaining to publishing the Keeladi excavation report since we do not know about the details of the clarification sought by the Centre. However, we (AIADMK) would support the state govt's stand on this matter," he said. Earlier, Palaniswami visited the house of B Ajith Kumar, who died of custodial torture in Thiruppuvanam, and interacted with his mother and brother. He told reporters that the law and order situation in the state is deteriorating. He suspects that the policemen acted in a brutal manner due to external pressure. It was only after protests by the people and AIADMK functionaries that the govt transferred the case to CBI, he said. On behalf of AIADMK, a cheque of Rs5 lakh would be handed over to the family of Ajith Kumar, he added. Later in the evening, Palaniswami continued his 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign in Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, and Paramakudi and Thiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district. At Manamadurai, Palaniswami questioned DMK MP Kanimozhi's claim in parliament that Pahalgam terrorist attack could have been averted if we had proper intelligence. "In 1998, when late M Karunanidhi was chief minister, there were serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore. Was it an intelligence failure," he asked. EPS said the central govt gave a befitting reply through Operation Sindoor. In Paramakudi, Palaniswami said Tamil Nadu was the number one state in education under AIADMK. At present, posts of principals are vacant in 96 arts and science colleges, and those of deans and professors in govt medical college hospitals, he added.

China, Nigeria Faceoff Over Miners "Abducted" in Central African Republic Firstpost Africa

China, Nigeria Faceoff Over Miners "Abducted" in Central African Republic | Firstpost Africa | N18G A shocking video of Nigerian miners allegedly trafficked and abandoned by a Chinese mining company in the Central African Republic has ignited outrage, prompting investigations from both Chinese and Nigerian authorities. This incident is not isolated, shedding light on a pattern of alleged labour abuses and environmental damage by Chinese mining operations across Africa. From accusations of illegal gold mining in Ghana to an acid spill contaminating a major river in Zambia, concerns about the practices of Chinese companies are growing. While China continues to deepen its influence across the continent through economic incentives and "debt diplomacy," a shift in US policy towards Africa, marked by tariffs and aid cuts, further contributes to African nations turning to Beijing for support. This raises critical questions about the long-term cost of such partnerships for the African nations. See More
