Minister: Over 140,000 lost MyKad cases involve youths
PUTRAJAYA (May 19): Of the 285,568 cases of lost MyKad reported last year, 50 per cent or 142,535 of them involved youth aged between 15 and 30, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
She said this figure is extremely worrying because MyKad is an important document that serves as access to various official matters.
She said that one of the main factors cited for the loss of MyKad is negligence, which accounted for 136,000 cases, and expressed concern over the risk of identity theft and fraud as well as difficulty in settling official matters, particularly those involving the government.
'So, when these youths are negligent, this will become a risk, namely having to face the prospect of being fined for a replacement MyKad, the time taken to get the replacement as well as the emotional stress,' she told a media conference after chairing the Strategic Collaboration Coordination Meeting between the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and the National Registration Department (NRD) here today.
Also present was NRD director-general Badrul Hisham Alias.
Hannah added that Selangor had the highest number of cases of MyKad loss involving youth, with 23,000 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (20,000 cases) and Johor (17,000 cases).
'We don't know why these three states (recorded the highest number of cases)… it could be due to them having big urban areas.
'There are lots of commercial activities in urban areas, so the MyKad is frequently handed over, such as at security posts at housing areas and commercial buildings… so it is very likely that this is closely related,' she said.
She said the meeting also studied in detail various intervention measures to be implemented through strategic collaboration between the KBS and NRD, including carrying out a digital advocacy campaign through the dissemination of graphic materials like posters and video clips on social media and official portals.
She added that the intervention measures involved delivering information regarding NRD services to youths, particularly through programmes organised by the KBS as well as departments and agencies under it.
'We will also provide counters or booths related to NRD services when organising major ministry programmes, such as the National Youth Day, National Sports Day and so on,' she said.
Hannah said the KBS and NRD also agreed to forge a collaboration to implement the 'Menyemai Kasih Rakyat' (MEKAR) programme to assist individuals who require NRD services, besides expanding the programme to include former national athletes. – Bernama Hannah Yeoh lost MyKad NRD youths

Over 171,000 lost MyKad replacement applications recorded
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 171,126 applications for the replacement of lost MyKad were recorded nationwide up to July 31, according to the National Registration Department (NRD). Its director-general, Badrul Hisham Alias, said negligence remained the leading cause of MyKad loss. "The 12 to 30 age group registered the highest number of cases, with 92,004 reports. "This was followed by 47,985 cases among those aged 31 to 50, 24,180 cases involving the 51 to 70 age group, 6,881 cases among those aged 71 to 90 and 76 cases involving individuals aged above 90." He added that Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor recorded the highest number of MyKad loss reports. He said in 2020, a total of 248,883 MyKad loss cases were reported, followed by 199,593 in 2021, 275,628 in 2022, 272,922 in 2023 and 283,306 last year. He urged the public to exercise greater care in handling their MyKad. Currently, the fee for the first instance of replacement is RM100, in addition to a processing fee of RM10. In a second instance, the replacement is RM300, in addition to a processing fee of RM10, while for the third and subsequent instances, the replacement is RM1,000 with a RM10 processing fee.

Four jailed 3.5 years for helping crime group steal from bank accounts
KOTA KINABALU: Four people were sentenced by the High Court here to three and a half years in jail for helping an organised crime group steal RM24.2 million from several bank accounts. Josepin J. Langkan, 38, Nasir Abdul Rasid, 60, Vireonis Jonok, 35, and Leong Hin Ping, 62, pleaded guilty before judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol to an alternative charge under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which carries up to 10 years in jail upon conviction. They were found guilty of helping an organised crime group further its interests between April 26 and July 10, 2024, at the MBSB Bank branch here. Accused Mazlani Jenuary, 53, also pleaded guilty to the alternative charge, but his case would be mentioned on Sept 22 for facts and sentencing following a request from his counsel. The prosecution offered the alternative charge after accepting representation letters from all the accused. According to the facts of the case, a police report was lodged on June 27, 2024 following intelligence gathering on an organised crime group involved in forging identity cards, fraud and criminal breach of trust. Josepin, Nasir, Vireonis and Leong were arrested at various locations between June 28 and July 12, 2024. Investigations revealed that the accused helped the group commit criminal breach of trust, using forged documents, including MyKad, to obtain material benefits. With their assistance, the group was able to withdraw large sums of money from several fixed deposit accounts at MBSB Bank in Kota Kinabalu. The accused also helped the group withdraw millions of ringgit in three cases in Manggatal and one in Tanjung Aru. These cases are being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 120B of the code. Josepin, Leong and Vireonis were represented by counsel Luke Ressa Balang and Hairul Vaiyron Othman, while Nasir was represented by Dominic Chew. Deputy public prosecutors Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul, Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham and Yazid Mustaqin Roslan conducted the prosecution. In mitigation, the counsel requested leniency, saying all the accused were first-time offenders and expressed remorse for their actions. Luke said Vireonis has Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and a lengthy prison term would seriously affect his health. He said Josepin and Vireonis would become prosecution witnesses. The prosecution sought a deterrent sentence, citing public interest and the seriousness of the offence. The court ordered the prison sentences for each accused to start from their date of arrest. Suspects Irene Chin Nyuk Thien, 38, and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip will go on trial on Sept 22. The two face the original charge under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which carries up to 20 years in jail, for being members of an organised crime group. On June 13, three of the 10 individuals charged in connection with the same case were sentenced to five years in jail by the same High Court judge.

Unemployed man fined for filing false car theft report in burglary probe

Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was fined RM2,000 or jailed seven months by the Magistrate's Court here Monday for filing a false report that his aunt's car had been stolen when it had actually been seized in a burglary investigation. Hariff Nazwan Jasofa, 30, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to giving false information to a police constable at the Public Complaints Counter at the Kota Kinabalu Police Station, at 12.45pm on July 1 this year. Advertisement The charge stated that Harrif told Constable Steve Novasollic Along that a white Perodua Axia in his possession had gone missing, intending for the officer to believe the statement. The charge under Section 182 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction. The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that he complainant lodged a police report following his investigation, during which Hariff was found to have given false information when making his report. In his false report, Hariff claimed that the car was stolen at Taman Putrajaya Telipok. Investigations later revealed that the vehicle had not been stolen, but had been seized by police on June 19 at Kepayan, in connection with another case under Section 457 of the Penal Code involving housebreaking. Hariff admitted that he had made the false report because he feared his aunt, the registered owner of the car, would be angry if she found out that he had used it with friends to commit a burglary, which led to the vehicle being confiscated by police. Hariff had also made a follow-up report on the same day, claiming his MyKad, which was in the car, had also been stolen. In another case, a 43-year-old man was charged with stealing 13 cans of Carlsberg Special Brew worth RM89.70 from a convenience store. Majilik Kuanang pleaded not guilty to the offence allegedly committed at 99 Speedmart, 88 Marketplace, at 11am, on July 29 this year. The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years and may also involve a fine or whipping, on conviction. The court fixed Oct 1 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM1,600 in two sureties. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man claimed trial to attempting to steal an electrical component from Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd's (Sabah Electricity) storage site. Andry was alleged to have tried to steal a busbar component inside a feeder pillar by opening it with a screwdriver at 12.59am on March 3, 2024, at the Sabah Electricity storage facility in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The charge was framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same Code. The court set Oct 8 for ptcm and granted the accused RM5,000 bail in two sureties.
