‘Irem Collection Vol. 3' Review: Totally Worth It For ‘Mr. Heli'

Forbes21-06-2025
'Mr. Heli' is a classic shmup that has been unavailable to play for a long time.
Having reviewed the first and second Irem Collection releases, the third is now here, and it finally includes the much-loved Mr. Heli.
Following the previous releases, this new collection contains Mr. Heli, Mystic Riders, and the weirdly compelling Dragon Breed.
Starting with Mystic Riders, this is a fairly straightforward side-scrolling shmup where you ride around on a broom, firing magic and using the broom for other attacks.
It was a decent shmup for its time and a lot more colorful and even cheerful compared to other Irem releases from the period.
As for Dragon Breed, it has a similar element to X Multiply's tentacles that can shield the player. In this instance, it's the dragon Bahamoot that can be used to coil around its rider, Kayus, to protect him from attacks.
'Mystic Riders' is a bright and colorful, magically themed shmup.

Dragon Breed also has a similar art style to X-Multiply and definitely stands out as one of the more fantastical-looking Irem shmups.
Then there is the beloved Mr. Heli.
It's been a long time since we've had a home version of this arcade classic. I think the last time we saw Mr. Heli in any kind of Irem-related collection was back in 2011 for the Irem Arcade Hits release from DotEmu.
In any case, its premise is fascinating, as Mr. Heli has you somewhat explore levels and mine for jewels that then unlock upgrades for your weapons.
The pacing and feel of the game is unlike most common shmups and feels more exploratory in nature.
The game starts off suitably cheerful, but gets more involved and bleaker later on. The art style is still very vibrant, and the gameplay is really unlike anything else.
While many, myself included, rate the 1987 release of the original R-Type as being a definitive and excellent shmup, I feel that Mr. Heli, also released in the same year, often gets overlooked despite its inherent excellence.
'Dragon Breed' shares elements with 'X Multiply', as the titular dragon can shield its rider.
Mr. Heli is also a really big game. Stages are split into sections with mini bosses and tunnelling levels with some quite tricky enemies. Each stage is also wildly different from the last and do become insanely challenging later on.
To be honest, this collection is worth getting purely for Mr. Heli alone. It's an amazing and unique shmup and one that hasn't been readily available for over a decade.
The other bonus is that this collection also includes the PC Engine version of Mr. Heli, which is not only a more humane game in terms of difficulty but is also a very good port.
Much like the original PC Engine version of R-Type, it seems that this era of Irem's games lent itself very well to the PC Engine system.
As for the other goodies in this collection, each game has a handy rewind function, as well as cheats and all manner of screen filters.
Overall, this is yet another great Irem Collection, and much like the first and second releases, this third instalment is excellent. However, its star attraction is the adorable Mr. Heli, which is still just as fun to play as when I played it in the arcades as a kid.

New Game Plus arrives next week in Assassin's Creed Shadows as confirmed by huge roadmap update

Assassin's Creed Shadows is getting a bunch of updates throughout the year It starts with a New Game Plus update next week Further changes and an expansion are set to arrive in September Ubisoft has provided a huge update for Assassin's Creed Shadows' upcoming content roadmap. Revealed in a post to the official series website, the 'summer roadmap' begins with a progression update, arriving next week on July 29. Headlining this update is the arrival of New Game Plus, which lets players carry over character level, gear, skill points, Hideout progression and knowledge rank into a new game after they've rolled credits. The progression update also brings a level cap increase from 60 to 80, new knowledge ranks, a new forge level and the addition of more achievements and trophies (depending on your platform of choice). At the start of September (date TBC), Ubisoft will bring a 'quality-of-life improvement update' to Assassin's Creed Shadows. This free update will finally allow players to fast forward the time of day, 'unfog' the world map, and bring more Hideout and general content updates. This update will also uncap the frame rate in cutscenes, though this is a feature that will only be found in the PC version of the game. Lastly, on September 16, Assassin's Creed Shadows will receive its first story expansion. Known as Claws of Awaji, the expansion adds a new region to explore, as well as all-new weapons, abilities, gear, and enemies. Ubisoft claims the expansion will add more than ten hours of content, and will unlock only after you've beaten the base game story. Likely, this means the expansion will carry on the story from the original ending. You might also like... Like the Capcom previously announced, the expansion of endgame content originally planned as part of Title Update 3 has been brought forward and will arrive with 1.021, which will include new high-difficulty quests and the appearance of 9-star tempered Monsters in the field at HR 100 or higher. These 9-star monsters include: Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, Jin Dahaad, Gore Magala, Arkveld, Mizutsune, Lagiacrus, Seregios. These changes will apply to the likes of Lance, Insect Glaive, Sword and Shield, and Charge Blade, which has had its raw damage for multi-hit attacks while in Power Axe Mode buffed. A new Glowing Stone appraisal item has also been been added as a reward for quests with 9-star monsters and can be transform into an Appraised Talisman with randomly assigned skills. Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda has now delivered a message to the community along with the patch notes, apologizing for the current state of the game while also promising that fixes are on the way. "Thank you so much for playing Monster Hunter Wilds. And a big thank you as well to all the hunters who have been sharing their game feedback and requests," Tokuda said. "The entire development team is carefully reviewing your feedback and working hard to implement improvements and adjustments. "We apologize for the time some improvements may take, but we are committed to delivering a more enjoyable and satisfying gaming experience, so we greatly appreciate your patience." Capcom said it is aware of many bug fixes, including an issue where the game may crash when a player gesture hits another player at the same time that a specific type of communication error has occurred, and plan to address it in the upcoming patch It also plans on introducing additional optimisation fixes in the future to improve stability, particularly on PC, including CPU load reduction in Title Update 4 later this year. Metal Gear Solid Delta's Foxhunt multiplayer mode won't support cross-play and fans are crushed

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's multiplayer mode, Fox Hunt, won't support cross-play Konami confirmed this in a social media post, saying cross-play won't be supported between PC and console Fans have expressed disappointment and are urging the developer to delay the mode until crossplay gets added Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's multiplayer mode, Fox Hunt, won't support cross-play between console and PC. This announcement comes from the Japanese Metal Gear X / Twitter account, just weeks before the game's release, where the developer said that "cross-play between different platforms will not be supported" (machine translated). This means players on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S won't be able to play the multiplayer together. Following Konami's statement, fans have been expressing disappointment online, with many asking the studio to delay Fox Hunt until crossplay is ready to be added. "Delay FOX HUNT, Please. Crossplay is necessary for players to have fun with their friends on other platforms!" one user said under the post. "Even if it needs a bigger delay do not launch the mode without crossplay it's 2025 crossplay is not a feature anymore it's something needed," another fan wrote. The reactions over on the Metal Gear subreddit are similar, though fans are hopeful the crossplay will be added to the mode in a later update. "Crossplay should have become the norm by now," one Redditor said. Fox Hunt was announced in June and is described as a "completely original online battle mode" that will play differently from 2008's Metal Gear Online. The multiplayer is being directed by series veteran Yu Sahara and takes place in the same world as the main game. It will also feature hide-and-seek mechanics, mixed with stealth and survival elements. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater arrives on August 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
