Cambodia turns to ICJ over border disputes with Thailand

NHKa day ago

Cambodia says it has sent a letter to the International Court of Justice to settle its long-running territorial disputes with Thailand. Last month, the two countries exchanged fire in a contested border area, leaving one Cambodian soldier dead.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on social media Sunday that his country has chosen to solve the disputes through the ICJ mechanism.
Thailand's foreign ministry said on Monday it is deeply disappointed with Phnom Penh's move and called for further bilateral negotiations.
The two countries held talks over the weekend in Phnom Penh, but failed to reach an agreement to ease tensions.
Concerns are mounting over their frayed relations. Thailand has restricted some border crossings and Cambodia has banned the screening and broadcasting of Thai films.
