Asean disaster management senior officials, experts gather in Cambodia to enhance regional cooperation
PHNOM PENH: The 46th meeting of the Asean Committee on Disaster Management (ACDM) and related meetings kicked off in northwest Cambodia's Siem Reap province on Tuesday (May 20), discussing ways to advance regional collaboration and resilience.
Cambodian Senior Minister Kun Kim, first vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), presided over the opening ceremony of the four-day event, which brought together Asean disaster management senior officials and experts, as well as Timor-Leste as an observer, said an NCDM press release.
Representatives from Asean dialogue partners, namely China, Japan, and South Korea, also participated in the regional meeting, the press release added.
The event reaffirmed ACDM's commitment to enhancing regional disaster resilience and to further strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders, it said.
ACDM serves as a regional platform for enhancing cooperation among Asean member countries focused on disaster risk reduction and management, enhancing resilience and preparedness for disasters through capacity building and exchange of good practices.
"The ACDM has increasingly contributed to the coordination and proactive approach to disaster management to enhance the safety, well-being and resilience of communities across the Southeast Asian region through the implementation of the Asean Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response," the press release said.

Thailand proposes neutral venue for next border talks
BANGKOK: Thailand's Defence Ministry has proposed that the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting be held on a neutral ground, and suggested Malaysia as the venue. Ministry spokesperson Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri said in a statement that the proposal is in line with the standard international practice of not holding meetings between disputing parties on the territory of one of the nations involved in the conflict. He added that Acting Defence Minister General Natthapon Nakpanich is slated to attend the GBC meeting, which Cambodia has proposed to host on August 4. "The GBC meeting provides an opportunity to jointly explore a way forward in de-escalating tensions and resolving border and security issues, reflecting our shared commitment to peace, stability, mutual respect, and good neighbourliness," he said in the statement issued on Thursday. However, Surasan emphasised that given the sensitive nature of the situation in both countries, it would be more appropriate to hold the meeting at a neutral venue, such as Malaysia. "While it is acknowledged that, under normal circumstances, bilateral meetings are held on a rotational basis – and that Thailand most recently served as host – this upcoming session is of an extraordinary nature. "I therefore believe it would be appropriate to convene the meeting at a neutral location," he said. Surasan also proposed allowing sufficient time for comprehensive discussions and suggested that the meeting be held from August 4 to 7, 2025. Conflict at the Thai-Cambodian border began with a brief skirmish on May 28 and escalated into armed clashes on July 24. Thai DPM Pichai confident of positive outcome from US tariff negotiations, awaits response tonight (July 31)
BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira on Thursday (July 31) provided an update on the ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, revealing that Thailand had submitted its final draft of the tariff proposal. He expects to receive an unofficial response on the matter later this evening, ahead of the critical August 1, 2025 deadline. 'We've been working on this since early this morning, maintaining continuous communication with the US. We've addressed their feedback from yesterday and are now fine-tuning the details. It's a delicate matter, but we're doing our best. While it's challenging, I'm confident we will receive good news tonight,' said Pichai. He explained that while the result would not be officially confirmed tonight, it would serve as a signal that the uncertainties are diminishing, providing Thailand with clearer direction for planning its economy for the second half of the year. Pichai emphasised that the proposal was not based on concessions from Thailand alone, but rather the result of careful and comprehensive negotiations that aimed at a "win-win" situation for both countries. The proposal includes reducing tariffs on certain imports, which Thailand argued is not a new issue, as the country already has Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with several nations under similar terms.
