ASU Commercial Aviation Program introduces helicopter pilot degree track
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) —Angelo State Universities Commercial Aviation Program is reaching new heights. Starting this fall semester, the Commercial Aviation Program will offer a helicopter pilot degree track. Scott Turner is the program director.
''Commercial aviation flight operations helicopter and aviation air traffic control operations so obviously for helicopter people who want to become pilots for EMS law enforcement or something like that and then for air traffic operations…people who want to be air traffic controllers and that sort of thing,' Turner said.
With the addition of this degree track, Turner said ASU is now one of the few universities nationwide to offer a degree for both helicopter and fixed wing pilots. Even fewer universities offer air traffic control and aviation administration. He says this new degree track is being offered to help meet a growing industry demand.
'There is always a need for that type of service-based pilot career path. It just kind of fit naturally with what we are already teaching,' Turner said.
One aspect of this program is the importance of hands-on training for the students.
''We want them to be able to fly as soon as possible I mean if you are coming in to get a degree and you want to fly an aircraft you don't want to wait two years before you do it ,so we don't do things like get a bunch of core classes knocked out before you get to do the thing that you want to do…we recognize that as a need of the student,' Turner said.
Currently the Commercial Aviation Program has about 175 students with applications still open for the remaining seats in the program. Turner said they hope to add around 100 more students.
'We still have some seats available, so I would encourage people if that is what they are wanting to do and look at that as a career apply to ASU as soon as you can let's get admitted let's get accepted into the program and let's go fly,' Turner said.

Bryce Harper homers in first at-bat in return to Phillies' lineup after 5 game absence
TORONTO (AP) — With Bryce Harper back in the lineup, the Philadelphia Phillies got off to a booming start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper hit one of two Philadelphia home runs in a six-run first inning off right-hander Bowden Francis in Tuesday's series opener. Advertisement It was Harper's first at-bat since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week. The home run was his ninth. 'I felt good, body feels good," Harper said. "Arm is still a little sore but I feel good.' Back in action after missing five games with a bruised right elbow, Harper finished 1 for 3 with two walks and scored twice as the Phillies won 8-3, snapping a four-game losing streak. 'He makes our lineup so much better,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East. Advertisement Harper followed a two-run home run by Trea Turner with a 394-foot blast, with both homers landing in Philadelphia's right field bullpen. It was the third time this season the Phillies have gone back-to-back. Turner said Harper's presence in the lineup forces opposing teams to change their game plans. 'He affects so many different people in so many different ways,' Turner said. 'That's why he's so good.' Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. 'Yeah, there's swelling,' he said. 'I think it's going to take a minute to go down but I thought today was a good day for me to get back out there. It's definitely bruised still and all that stuff, but we're working through it.' In light of the injury, Harper wore a protective guard on his elbow Tuesday. 'Felt a little bulky but felt good,' Harper said. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Free meals for kids in San Angelo this summer
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The San Angelo Summer School Free Meals Program began on June 3 with three schools offering meals for the week. Anyone who is 18 or younger is invited for free breakfast and lunch throughout the summer through the Summer Food Service Program. 'We make sure that there's a fruit or vegetable at breakfast at lunch so those kinds of components are being taken care of and taking that burden off of the family,' said Tiffani Hebert, Director of Child Nutrition Services. This week, the three schools that are providing the meals for over 300 people a day are Goliad, Glenmore and the Southside Recreational Center. 'It's a fun time to still be able to come into the school, kind of breaks up the day and it adds that level of security that if somebody needs a meal this summer, they have a place to go,' Hebert said. Adults can also eat breakfast and lunch for $3 per meal. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Harper homers in return, Turner goes deep twice as Phillies use 6-run 1st to beat Blue Jays 8-3
TORONTO (AP) — Bryce Harper homered in his first at-bat following a five-game absence, Trea Turner went deep twice and the Philadelphia Phillies scored six runs in the first inning Tuesday night on the way to an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays that ended a four-game skid. Harper was back in action after being sidelined with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch. The Phillies went 1-4 without the slugger and fell out of first place in the NL East. Against the Blue Jays, Harper went 1 for 3 with two walks and scored twice. Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez (5-1) allowed one run in six innings to win for the first time since May 7. Addison Barger hit a two-run home run off Maz Lazar, and Davis Schneider hit a solo shot off Sánchez, but Toronto had its five-game winning streak halted. Barger has homered in four straight games, raising his season total to six. Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (2-7) matched a career-worst by allowing seven runs, six earned, in 1 2/3 innings. Bryson Stott drew a leadoff walk and Turner followed with a two-run homer. Harper piled on with a 394-foot drive, his ninth. It was the third time the Phillies have hit back-to-back homers. Max Kepler's RBI single and Stott's two-run hit capped the six-run inning, which matched Philadelphia's biggest of the season. Turner added a solo homer, his seventh, off Erik Swanson in the eighth inning. It was Turner's first multi-homer game of the season and the 18th of his career. Back at third base after filling in for Harper at first, Alec Bohm made a diving stop on George Springer's grounder in the third, then threw from one knee to get the out. The Phillies have won 14 of 16 on the road. Up next ___
