Read all about it: Eldorado's brand-new library is open

ELDORADO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) —Tucked away in Eldorado is a hidden gem in the brand new Schleicher County Public Library. You can find the new library on the other side of the Eldorado Service Center. Michelle Bischoffberger is the library director and said this new library has been a project years in the making. 'This building used to be the old hospital…and this side used to be the clinic, and so I guess about four years ago there was talk at the commissioners court that maybe we can open a new library and it could be over here in this part of the clinic…'Bischoffberger said. The Lone Star and the cross: One man's sacred march across Texas & beyond Four years later, the library on the other side of the clinic has been turned into the new library. Bischoffberger says that over $900,000 in grant funding was secured to bring this vision to life. She says they received help from an outside architect organization whose focus is on helping rural libraries. This organization helped design the library and pick furniture, which was all done years before construction in the new space began. 'We gutted the whole place out down to the studs and everything…we built everything in this library so it is all brand new,' Bischoffberger said. In this library space, Bischoffberger said she is able to accommodate more people than she ever could in the old space. 'I always did summer programs and stuff, but I could only have…I mean I only had a little tiny space for that….instead of being cramped in a little room with 15-20 kids, I have a nice big room so that we can spread out,' Bischoffberger said. Texas ranchers brace for possible screwworm threat She is still able to offer the same amenities one would hope to find in a library, along with some new ones. 'We've got the reading, we have computers, we have a large meeting room that people can use for pretty much anything they want to use…then we have two study rooms so when school happens…and they want they want to come over after school and use the study rooms they can do that,' Bischoffberger said. Concho Valley Farmers Market summer grand opening More than anything material, Bischoffberger said she wanted to create a space that could be used by the entire community and bring a little taste of a bigger city library to small-town Eldorado. 'It's for them and for them to have all the best things that might be in a city, but it's right here in Eldorado, and I want them to be very proud of it,' Bischoffberger said. Texas ranchers brace for possible screwworm threat

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — On ranches in South Texas, the mood is tense as word is reaching ranchers about the spreading of New World Screwworms. These are flesh-eating parasites that target warm-blooded animals. While there are no reports of screwworms having crossed the border into Texas, many are recalling a procedure of using sterile male screwworm flies that eradicated this problem in the U.S. several decades ago. 'Screwworms have been in the United States before, back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. We controlled those outbreaks at those times with sterile male screwworm flies,' Charlie Christenson at Producers Livestock Auction said. Christenson said the way to get ahead of these screwworms spreading into Texas is by having the means to produce these sterile flies. He says the effects of screwworm infestations on animals can be dire. 'They leave larvae on an open wound on an animal, and that larvae turns into a screwworm that basically feeds on living flesh, which is the difference between it and a maggot,' Christenson said. Knowing that screwworms could cross from Mexico into Texas, Texas Representative Tony Gonzales in Washington, D.C. created legislation called the 'STOP Screwworms Act' to allocate funding to create the exact facility needed to produce sterile flies. 'It's very much focused on creating a facility that will sterilize these flies to stop the spreading of screwworms…we have to stop relying on foreign countries to do our work and to me it makes a whole lot of sense if this facility is right here in Texas…right here in the United States.' Christenson said he is hopeful for this new legislation because those with cattle are not the only ones who can be impacted by screwworms. 'It makes cattleman and sheep people…everybody that has wildlife…the deer people are nervous about it because of the open wound,' Christenson said. USDA officials are monitoring the border as we await action from this new piece of legislation. For now, these ranchers say they'll stay alert and hope this sterile fly facility comes before the screwworms do. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Lone Star and the cross: One man's sacred march across Texas & beyond

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Walter Masters, a resident of San Angelo, Texas, has been carrying a cross across the United States for the past 25 years. Thursday morning, a reporter from Concho Valley Homepage saw Masters walking the streets on the south side of San Angelo. Recent rainfall in San Angelo exceeds normal June levels According to Masters, he's walked across the country in 46 states while counting some serious mileage along the way. 'I've walked about 25,000 miles sharing the love of Christ everywhere we go,' said Masters. Masters said he's walked into the San Angelo Rodeo Parade and that God had called him to stay and focus on San Angelo and the surrounding cities. TGSO hosts run for Special Olympics Texas Masters makes the crosses he carries. When it comes to the cross he carries, he said it weighs about 35 pounds, but it is nowhere near the level Jesus had to carry; however, his cross serves as a reminder. 'I pray if they don't stop, that they are reminded of Christ because that's all that matters, not me,' said Masters. Masters noted that his journey with the cross was taking him through San Angelo as he made his way to Bronte, Texas, nearly 34 miles from San Angelo. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
