The soul of The Last of Us is in Gustavo Santaolalla's music

The Verge8 hours ago

When fans nervously tuned in to watch HBO's adaptation of one of their favorite video games, there was one familiar presence that immediately calmed their nerves: the mournful guitar of Gustavo Santaolalla. As certain story beats changed and beloved polygonal faces were replaced with new actors, the beating heart of The Last of Us — its mesmerizing, tension-ridden score — survived the transition to TV intact.
'[Series creator] Neil Druckmann has said that my music is part of the DNA of The Last of Us,' Santaolalla says. 'I think the fact that we kept the sonic fabric — that we didn't do an orchestral score for the series — has been instrumental in keeping those fans of the games fans of the series, too.'
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Santaolalla first started releasing music when he was 17. Loving both English rock bands and the traditional Argentine folk music that he was raised on, Santaolalla melded both into his own unique sound, part of a genre called rock nacional. Before he could fully make his mark, Santaolalla's family fled the Argentine junta dictatorship in 1978, moving to Los Angeles, where his unique sound soon caught the attention of filmmakers. Snapped up to score the 2000 film Amores Perros and 2003's 21 Grams, their success led to Santaolalla composing the soundtracks for Brokeback Mountain and Babe l, both of which won him Oscars.
Santaolla's sonic secret? Embracing the eloquence of silence. 'I work so much with silence and space, because silences sometimes can be louder than a note that you're playing,' says Santaolalla. 'I remember on Brokeback Mountain when I first sent them the music, the producer said 'I thought you were pulling my leg at first, because you wait so long to play the next note!''
'Silences sometimes can be louder than a note that you're playing.'
After winning two Oscars back to back, Santaolalla carefully considered his next career move. Despite being a self-professed 'terrible gamer' Santaolalla tells me he always loved watching his son play, mesmerized by the on-screen kineticism. 'I always thought that if somebody connects this at an emotional level with a player, it's going to be a revolution.'
It turns out, the universe had picked up on Santaolalla's newest interest. Post-Oscars, he was approached by several game companies to do music, but turned them down because 'I'm very picky about the work that I do.' That includes a lucrative gaming project that he is careful not to name. 'Everyone thought I was crazy!' he chuckles. Still, Santaolalla quietly hoped that a more emotionally-resonant project would materialize.
'So, I waited… and then Neil appeared,' Santaolalla says. 'When Neil told his colleagues that he wanted me to do this, [his colleagues ] said, No, Gustavo is not going to be interested — he won two Oscars! But when Neil [told me] the story, and that he wanted to do a game that connects with people on an emotional level… I was sold.
What even Neil Druckmann wasn't prepared for, however, was that Gustavo's music would become just as crucial a presence as Ellie and Joel. In a post apocalyptic world where life is scarce and danger lurks around every corner, silence hangs in the air like a threat. Santaolalla's scuffed notes, discordant melodies and screeching fret slides reverberate across the dilapidated city streets, feeling as unpredictable as the world Ellie and Joel inhabit.
'I love the use of imperfections, even errors or mistakes.'
'I love the use of imperfections, even errors or mistakes,' Santaolalla explains. 'Any professional guitar player when they're recording tend to avoid all kinds of noises; when you run your hand on the fretboard or little glitches in your playing. But sometimes, I'll push those in my mix, and I think that humanizes it. That's why many people have said that my music becomes like a character — a presence. It's why I play things myself.'
In the second game, Gustavo's music becomes a physical part of the fiction, with Ellie carrying a guitar throughout her quest for vengeance. She takes out the instrument during welcome moments of downtime, offering cathartic respite. And just like Gustavo's score, these beautiful vignettes break up the harrowing silence, which carries through in the second season of the show.
'I love the TV series too,' says Santaolalla. ' For the show, Neil associated himself with another incredible talent, Craig Mazin — the guy that did Chernobyl — who knows that media and that language. I think it was a big, big challenge, because when you go from one media to another one, people say no, I like the original better! So, I think, once again, that the way we have used the music has been instrumental to keep that fan base attached.'
He adds that 'I think that when a story is really great, like a theatrical piece — like Shakespeare — it doesn't matter who plays the character. Obviously Pedro Pascal's Joel is different than the Joel from the game, but the substance of the character is so powerful that those things are just superficial. They could have done this as a series, as a feature film, as a puppet theatre piece, or an animation and it will still land regardless — because it's just great writing.'
Now as Santaolalla finds himself releasing his very own instrument — the Guitarocko — it feels like the culmination of the musical journey he started as a teen. Melding the traditional Bolivian 10 stringed ronroco with the form factor of a Fender Stratocaster, Gustavo feels a father-like pride for his musical creation: the 73-year-old is invigorated by what The Last Of Us has given him at this stage in his career.
'I've been blessed with the fact that I have connected with an audience since I was very young,' he says. 'But the way I connect with the fans of The Last of Us and the way they connect with the music… here's a special devotion that is really beautiful. I have this new audience which is fantastic, and I love that they didn't know me as an artist or as a film composer! Now they look for my music, and they discover these things. It's been a gift for me, at this point — after everything that I've been through — to be involved with a project like this.'

WWE Worlds Collide 2025 results, awards, analysis: El Hijo del Vikingo, Chad Gable deliver one of WWE's best of the year

It's a big weekend for WWE, as its partnership with AAA kicked off properly with WWE Worlds Collide 2025 on Saturday inside Los Angeles' Kia Forum. The event served as a good appetizer to WWE Money In the Bank 2025. Two titles were on the line, highlighted by the AAA Mega Championship that saw the champion El Hijo del Vikingo defend against Chad Gable in a great showcase to close the event. As the only singles match on the card, it was bound to get plenty of time, especially with the big title implication. After several stunning near-falls, Gable ultimately fell short to the high-flying Vikingo's patented 630 splash. Advertisement The co-main event featured NXT North American Champion Ethan Page against three challengers in a Fatal 4-Way. Page retained in yet another highway theft type of finish, scoring the pin on Laredo Kid to overcome the odds. Je'Von Evans and Rey Fenix played critical roles that fully displayed their incredible talents. In the night's lone women's match, former NXT Women's Champion Stephanie Vaquer joined forces with Lola Vice to take out Chik Tormenta and Dalys. It was largely a showcase for Vaquer, who will look to capture the women's Money In the Bank briefcase later in the night. I give Worlds Collide a crown score of: 👑 8/10. 👑 Worlds Collide Uncrowned Nightly Award Winners: MVP: Chad Gable Thanks in part to his hidden El Grande Americano gimmick (so we assume), Gable has really gotten time to shine in recent months. His match with Vikingo was as much of a reminder as the world could've asked for about how great he is. Gable is a genuine main-event talent who, if presented with a more serious persona — think "wrestling machine" Kurt Angle — would be widely regarded as one of the best on the planet. Advertisement I don't like that the Angle comparisons have gotten as far as they have, as easy as they are to make, but WWE is in too deep now, so let's embrace them to the fullest. Uncrowned Gem of the Night: Mr. Iguana Mr. Iguana was an absolute star in his match. Very clearly a silly, fun and borderline harmless gimmick, Mr. Iguana can go when the bell rings, and is just an entertaining wrestler to watch. You can only take something like what he is so far, but for what it is, it's a great time. Match of the Night: El Hijo de Vikingo vs. Chad Gable This was a foregone conclusion, and that almost felt by design. While some of the massive near-fall spots toward the end of the match were a bit too ridiculous for my liking, they were executed beautifully. The styles contrast between both men blended wonderfully and delivered one of the best WWE matches of the year. Advertisement Best Spot: Fenix's top-rope Spanish fly to Kid into an Ego's Edge from Page Take your pick between the title matches for the card's best spot. It could be any of them, but the sequence between Fenix, Kid and Page flowed so gorgeously that it deserves some extra love. If you missed Worlds Collide, definitely go back and watch the final two matches, at the very least. David E. Kelley Is 'Hopeful' For ‘Big Little Lies' Season 3: 'We All Want To Do It Again'

David E. Kelley is just as eager for the continuation of Big Little Lies as the cast and fans of the HBO serialized adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel. In a recent interview with People, the veteran TV writer-producer said he is 'hopeful' about Season 3, which would come more than six years after the conclusion of the sophomore installment. 'We had a great time doing the first two seasons and we all want to do it again. I'm hopeful it'll happen.' Though the main cast — Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz — have largely expressed interest in returning, the quintet of Monterey moms are not yet 'under contract.' In recent months, Kravitz has expressed that she is 'waiting by the phone' for any news of forward movement. 'You need to corral a lot of high-caliber talent and their publicists, but everyone is very committed to it,' the Presumed Innocent creator stated, adding that it was 'pretty nice to hear' that the actresses were game to return. News of a third season first began percolating when Kidman first let it slip that HBO was working on a continuation of the moody, seaside-set crime drama. In the fall of last year, HBO boss Casey Bloys said the delay was attributed to the need for sequel source material from Moriarty, who announced she was developing a followup to her original novel, which will feature a time jump and new characters. With Moriarty still penning the book, Kelley said the project is 'still very premature.' He concluded, 'We haven't really all gotten together to brainstorm yet, but again, it's a great stable of talent. Once we do [get together], I think we have a good shot of figuring it out.' Jared Leto Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Multiple Women, Including Some Who Say They Were Underage, as Actor Denies Allegations

Jared Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women Air Mail reports that it spoke with nine women who allege that Leto, 53, behaved inappropriately toward them. Some of the women also claim to have begun talking to the actor when they were underage A representative for the actor denied all allegations to the outletJared Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. On Saturday, June 7, Air Mail published a story following interviews with nine women who claim that the 53-year-old actor and musician behaved inappropriately toward them, some while they were underage. The women allege a longstanding pattern of such behavior. 'It's been an open secret for a long time,' an anonymous woman told the outlet. Among the allegations, Leto is accused of asking sexual questions to a 16-year-old girl, walking out of a room nude in front of a 17-year-old girl and exposing himself and masturbating before putting an 18-year-old's hand "on him." In a statement to Air Mail, a representative for the Thirty Seconds to Mars band member "expressly" denied all allegations. A representative for Leto did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Among the allegations featured in the report, Laura La Rue — a model who was 16 in 2008 — recalled meeting Leto at an animal rights benefit that year and connecting with him over email before he invited her to his studio. She visited his studio in April 2009 and recalled him allegedly "flirting" with her while there. A representative for Leto told Air Mail that their "communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate" and that La Rue "later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions." La Rue, however, denied that she applied for the position. She also alleged, per Air Mail, that Leto walked out of a room nude "like it was normal" on one occasion when she was 17. 'I thought maybe this was just what adult men do,' she told the outlet. One woman claimed that she was 16 years old in 2008 when Leto approached her at Urth Caffé in Los Angeles and "got" her number. She said that, days later, Leto called her home in the middle of the night with the "weirdest, grossest voice," adding that she didn't "know if he was on drugs." A representative for the actor told Air Mail that Leto 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years.' The woman alleged that after she turned down an invitation to attend a party, Leto would continue to call her in the early mornings over the span of three weeks, per Air Mail. 'And the conversations turned sexual," she claimed. "He'd ask things like, 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d---?' ' She added: 'He changed — his voice, the way he talked. It scared me. That was the first time I thought, 'Oh my God, that's not just in movies.' ' The woman's mother said she overheard a phone call and could confirm her story, per Air Mail. Another woman, who claims she was underage when she began texting Leto, alleged that the actor would ask her uncomfortable questions during visits to his home and that during one visit when she was 18, 'he suddenly pulled his penis out and started masturbating." "Then he walked over, grabbed my hand, and put it on him," the woman alleged, per Air Mail. "He leaned in and said, 'I want you to spit on it.' ' Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Elsewhere in the report from Air Mail, one woman alleged that she was "definitely not the youngest person there" while attending one of Leto's parties at his home in the 2000s when she was 18. Per the outlet, she also alleged that the focus of the party appeared to be getting girls to skinny dip. A representative for Leto told Air Mail that 'there was never any recruiting, complaints or impropriety." Nightlife promoter Brent Bolthouse, who organized multiple parties at Leto's home, told the outlet he 'never saw anyone skinny-dipping.' Air Mail reported that stories surrounding Leto's alleged inappropriate behavior surfaced last month when DJ Allie Teilz reposted a Facebook status from 2012 on her Instagram Stories, writing that she was "assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17." A representative for Leto told the outlet that her "allegations are demonstrably false."
