Rare Banksy, owned by blink-182's Mark Hoppus, heads to auction
LONDON, March 3 (Reuters) - A rare Banksy artwork, hand-painted by the elusive street artist and owned by U.S. musician Mark Hoppus, heads to auction on Tuesday with a price estimate of up to $6.35 million.
"Crude Oil (Vettriano)" is Banksy's re-imagining of the 1992 painting "The Singing Butler" by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano, whose death was announced on Monday.
It depicts Vettriano's butler serenading a dancing couple on a beach, with Banksy' addition of a sinking oil liner and two figures in hazmat suits moving a barrel of toxic waste in the background.
The painting, bought by the co-founder of pop-punk band blink-182 Hoppus and his wife Skye in 2011, is being offered at Sotheby's London "Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction", with an estimate of 3 million - 5 million pounds ($3.81 million - $6.35 million).
"It was first exhibited in (Banksy's) landmark exhibition in Notting Hill in 2005, which really propelled him into the public sphere," Mackie Hayden-Cook, specialist, contemporary art at Sotheby's, told Reuters.
"It's rare for a work of this quality to come to market, and this one really has all the best ingredients. A fabulous owner, it's hand-painted, impeccable exhibition history, and its subject is more urgent now than ever before."
Speaking before news of Vettriano's death, she linked Banksy's decision to re-imagine his work to the parallels between the two artists at the time.
"Like Banksy, you have a really, really popular artist that is loved by the masses and appreciated by many. But for whatever reason, he was snubbed by the art world," Hayden-Cook said.
Hoppus said part of the sale proceeds would go to medical charities and the California Fire Foundation, following the Los Angeles wildfires. He and his wife also intend to buy new art.
'Coming up in punk rock, it was always the ethos that if your band got any success, you brought your friends up with you," he told Reuters on Sunday.
"So with this art sale, I hope to take some of the money and put it back into the art community with up-and-coming artists that we're inspired by and just continue that...I want to be a punk rock Medici.'

The ex-Pussycat Dolls star, 46, said the couple plan to tie the knot after her hit Broadway run of Sunset Boulevard comes to an end. 4 Nicole Scherzinger has lifted the lid on her wedding plans with Thom Evans Credit: GC Images 4 The couple has been engaged for two years Credit: Getty 4 Nicole said she wanted to put wedding plans on hold while she focused on her career Credit: Getty The pop star has been engaged to the Rugby Union star for two years after he popped the question in June 2023. Nicole and Thom first met in 2019 on X-Factor: Celebrity when she was a judge and he took part in a boyband. The singer ditched tennis star Grigor Dimitrov as she began dating the Scottish sportsman. Four years later, the former rugby international got down on one knee in a romantic beach proposal during a holiday to Portugal. The pair have frequently been quizzed about their wedding plans over the last few years. But Nicole has always made it clear that they would hold off on making plans until she finished her current role. We will get married. We're engaged to be married when I'm not working. Thank God he is so patient Nicole Scherzinger Her St James Theatre final show is set to take to the stage on July 20, and Nicole's performance of Norma Desmond has made her a favourite to win Best Actress at the Tony Awards tonight. So with the official closing date coming next month, many have been left curious if she had started to think about wedding planning. When asked about it directly, Nicole said they plan to get married in Hawaii "soon", according to The Mirror. And she also praised her fiancé for being like a 'God' and having a lot of patience while she focused on her career. Nicole Scherzinger shows the difference of her face after EMFACE treatment She said: "We will get married. We're engaged to be married when I'm not working. Thank God he is so patient. "We'll get married back home in Hawaii, where my family is from." Reflecting on their relationship, she added: "It was on Celebrity X Factor, I'm not gross, okay. I met him on that, and I saved him so he had to come back. "We had actually auditioned them in the summer, and we didn't meet face-to-face until the winter. "And then after that we've been together ever since.' But Nicole insisted that she would not have been so successful in her breakout role in musical theatre if it weren't for Thom's support. The music icon thanked her fiancé for being so understanding while she "lived like a hermit" for almost two years. She told Sirius XM: "I live like a hermit, I try not to do much. LOVE STORY THOM pursued the Nicole for more than six years before he finally won her over on X Factor: Celebrity when he was competing and she was a judge in 2019. He first made a bid for her affections at the 2014 Global Gift Gala fundraiser in London but was rebuffed. Nicole was going through a bad patch with her then partner Lewis Hamilton and only wanted to talk about her relationship, giving Thom the cold shoulder. Undeterred, he continued lusting over her on social media before finally bagging the girl of his dreams during his X Factor stint with fellow rugby stars Ben Foden and Levi Davis in their band Try Star. A source said: 'Thom knew he'd have a lot of fun on the show and not just because of the singing. 'He's been after Nicole for some time and was confident that spending so much time in her company would give him the opportunity to woo her. 'In the end, she couldn't resist Thom's charms, despite the fact that she was meant to be judging him.' Nicole was so infatuated with Thom she ended up sending his band home in a bid to prolong the romance, conceding it would be harder to maintain the pretence the longer he was on the show. The couple went public at an exclusive Golden Globes after-party in Beverly Hills, posing for snappers on the red carpet. Before they put their romance in the spotlight, they confirmed the relationship with close friends by attending Simon Cowell's Thanksgiving bash in London. "I still take my meetings and do work that I have to do and wherever they need me. 'It's quite a gruelling schedule right now, doing this Tony campaign season. So I just tried to rest when I can. "I'm not much of a sleeper. I've never been. "But I've had to be disciplined to make sure I get six to eight hours, because my voice is my everything. "I feel like every performance, I leave my soul and my voice out there on the stage. "So I kind of live like a hermit. I don't really do much, and I just drink a lot of water.'

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker booed by WWE crowd as she holds baby
Kourtney Kardashian and her Blink-182 drummer husband and their one-year-old son made an appearance at WWE's Money in the Bank event at the Intuit Dome Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker were booed by WWE crowd as she held her baby this weekend. The celebrity couple went to WWE's Money in the Bank event at the Intuit Dome along with their one-year-old son Rocky Thirteen but it seems some attendees weren't too happy that they were there. The three of them were showed on a large screen inside the event but a video circling on the internet shows that some fans were booing the family. However, it seems the situation didn't bother the couple much as Kourtney continued smiling and Travis flashed a peace sign at the camera. Kourtney kept focused on her little one as she stayed looking at him and cradling him in her arms. She kept her baby's face away from the camera as she sat him on her knee and faced him. Kourtney and Travis didn't stay for the whole event but stuck around just for the Men's Money in the Bank Ladder Match. A clip from later on showed the pair making their way out of the stadium. The musician held their son and greeted fans along the way while following Kourtney. This comes soon after it resurfaced that Kourtney previously claimed she was 'socked in the face' by a random woman while attending one of Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' birthday parties in 2001. At the time, long before the Last Night rapper was put on trial, he rented out TAO nightclub to celebrate his birthday with a host of stars. In an old clip from Khloe Kardashian's 2016 show, Kocktails with Khloé, Kourtney recalled the moment during a chat. "I got socked in the face cuz I was waiting in line for the bathroom at TAO, which Diddy rented out the whole restaurant. It was for his birthday," she said. Kourtney told the story and said his invitations were sent out in the form of a CD. Diddy recalled: "I remember somebody getting socked [in line at the bathroom]." Kourtney explained that she was waiting in line at the bathroom when a girl "cut in front" of her and turned around and punched her when the star told her to wait her turn. Kourtney said: "I was like, 'Excuse me, I'm next.' And she literally just went, like, boom right in the face. I didn't know what to do. Nobody was with me. I was by myself." After the woman left, Kourtney said she went into the bathroom stall and cried before going to find her sister Khloe. Khloe joked she tried to search for the woman to "beat her up" for hurting Kourtney.
