Rose Hill man denies charges in girl's death
ROSE HILL, Kan. (KSNW) — The adoptive father of Kennedy Schroer, the 6-year-old girl found buried in a Rose Hill backyard, has pleaded not guilty to charges connected to her death. Joseph Schroer, 53, waived his right to a preliminary hearing this week in Butler County District Court. He is facing five charges, including aggravated endangering a child and interference with law enforcement. A judge is expected to decide in October whether the case against him will move forward to trial. The remains of Kennedy, whose birth name was Natalie Garcia, were discovered in September 2023, buried in a trash bag behind the family's home. Investigators believe she died in November 2020. The investigation revealed Kennedy likely died by suffocation, according to the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center. Her death was ruled a homicide. Man charged in connection to deadly March crash Joseph's wife, Crystina Schroer, 50, is facing nine counts, including first-degree murder, multiple counts of child abuse, and desecration of a corpse. She is scheduled for her next court appearance on July 9. Authorities said the arrests followed a months-long investigation involving local, state, and federal agencies. Detectives logged more than 2,000 hours as they pieced together what happened to Kennedy, whose case has shaken the small Rose Hill community. Officials said the girl had likely been buried for nearly three years before her remains were discovered, leading to public outcry and calls for justice. 'We believe these are the only two responsible at this time,' Rose Hill Police Chief Taylor Parlier said after the arrests. 'There is some additional information that we're looking into, but we believe this was the right time and the right charges.' For more Kansas news, click here.
