Steelers Fans Bring Terrible Towel to Pope Leo XIV's Introduction
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the preeminent organizations in the NFL, with six Super Bowl championships to their name, nearly a century of football in its past, and numerous legends.
The team's consistency is unmatched. They've had three head coaches in over 50 years and haven't posted a losing season since 2003.

As a result, Pittsburgh isn't just an iconic sports franchise. It's an international brand, so when there's news outside of the United States, there's a non-zero chance that a fan is somehow involved.
The latest rendition of this phenomenon came on Thursday, when Steelers fans were represented at Pope Leo XIV's initial appearance by way of the Terrible Towel.
CBS News' Tony Dokoupil reported that a Terrible Towel made its way to Vatican City.
"There are also items that people want blessed," Dokoupil said. "There was even a woman from Pittsburgh who had, if you're a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, the Terrible Towel, the yellow towel they wave at football games. She held that up and wanted a picture."

The Terrible Towel, of course, is a staple of Steelers fandom. The yellow garment, waved by thousands every fall Sunday, is as Pittsburgh as Pittsburgh gets. It isn't stuck to Acrisure Stadium, either. Fans have flaunted it while the Pittsburgh Pirates pretend to put a competitive team together and when the Pittsburgh Penguins host playoff games. It's a way to claim Western Pennsylvania pride where a fan may reside.
Pope Leo XIV, originally Cardinal Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago and is a noted Chicago White Sox fan. It isn't confirmed whether he's a Chicago Bears fan, but it is worth noting that he spent time in Pennsylvania, having graduated from Villanova.
The Pope was considered to be a shocking selection by many, especially given the quick turnaround of the conclave, suggesting a favorite had won easily. Prevost is the first American pope in the church's history, and will play a significant role in global politics as the leader of the Catholic church.
Among the thousands of people in the Vatican City crowd, at least one holds the Steelers close to their heart. Perhaps his blessing will grant them good fortune as they head into 2025.

Lions trade proposal for Bengals' Trey Hendrickson picked as winning bid by ESPN
Trey Hendrickson traded to the Detroit Lions. Wouldn't that be nice? Lions fans, players, coaches, media would all love to see it. Maybe even Lions general manager Brad Holmes, too. And there's a deal out there. Both sides just need to look to us writers for a fair trade. Advertisement At least, that's what concluded after four writers proposed four trades between the Cincinnati Bengals for four different teams. The best offer? That's right, it was the Lions with the winning bid for the NFL's reigning sack leader. (He has 17½ sacks each of the past two seasons.) The offer came from ESPN writer Ben Solak, who proposed an exchange of three draft picks and Hendrickson, 30. Lions get: Hendrickson, 2026 fifth-round pick. Bengals get: 2026 second-round pick, 2027 fourth-round pick (can become third-rounder with performance conditions). Solak writes the Lions should behave like a legitimate Super Bowl contender, which they are, and make an aggressive trade for a proven player. He notes they have "plenty of cap space to extend Hendrickson," who has one year remaining on his deal and wants a new deal, which is the impetus for his trade demand. The Lions have the third-most cap space remaining for 2025. Advertisement Ben Baby, ESPN's Bengals reporter, chose the Lions' offer over ones pitched for the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders, and believes it's a realistic offer that could get a deal done. "By acquiring picks in 2026 and 2027, the value of the trade would be prolonged for the Bengals over the course of those players' respective rookie deals," Baby writes, mentioning that sending him to the NFC instead of a rival AFC contender like the Bills is a bonus. He also played his first four seasons in New Orleans while Campbell was a Saints assistant, so the familiarity is there. He eventually played out the season, and now says the Bengals are not holding up their end of the bargain, so trust has been lost. Cincinnati, which sees itself as a Super Bowl contender, agreed to let him and his representatives seek out a trade, but clearly the compensation in return has not met the Bengals' asking price. They won't be getting a first-round pick for him, that is clear. French Open women's semifinal: Live updates, highlights as Coco Gauff dominates, joining Aryna Sabalenka in final
It may not have been the French Open final, but Coco Gauff played like a champion during her semifinals match vs. Lois Boisson on Thursday. Gauff turned in a dominant performance in the win, beating Boisson (6-1, 6-2) in straight sets. It was an excellent performance from Gauff, who seemed completely locked in against Boisson. Seemingly every shot hit by Gauff landed where ever she desired. Boisson did her best to keep up with Gauff's relentless attack, but could not match the American's excellence in the win. Advertisement The victory pushes Gauff into the French Open final for the second time in her career. Gauff also made it to the final in 2022, where she lost to Iga Swiatek. There will be no rematch in 2025. Swiatek lost her semifinals match to women's No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday. Sabalenka and Gauff will square off in the final Saturday. Aryna Sabalenka advances past Iga Swiatek at French Open The 2025 French Open semifinals match between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek was as good as advertised. After a back-and-forth match, Sabalenka came out on top in three sets (7-6, 4-6, 6-0), advancing to the final. Advertisement It was a tremendous match all the way through. Despite some early mistakes by Swiatek, she was able to rally in the first set and eventually force a tiebreak. But with the first set on the line, Sabalenka rose to the occasion, using her devastating serve to take the win. Swiatek answered back in the second set, taking an early 3-1 lead. While Sabalenka fought her back, Swiatek came out ahead this time around, winning the second set 6-4 to set up a decisive third set. It was the first time in the entire tournament that Sabalenka dropped a set. There was a lot riding on the final set for Swiatek, who has won the French Open the past three years. She came into the match riding a 26-match win streak, the second best figure in the history of the. French Open. Advertisement Things didn't start out well for Swiatek, as Sabalenka jumped up to an early 3-0 lead in the final set. She carried that momentum all the way through the set, winning 6-0 and advancing to her first French Open final. Fatigue may have been the biggest factor in Sabalenka's victory. Despite a lengthy match, Sabalenka's serves remained dominant even in the final set. Swiatek, who was able to turn in some strong returns in the first two sets, couldn't seem to keep up with Sabalenka's late serves, which were still coming in at incredible speeds. With the win, Sabalenka will face Gauff in the final. It should be a tight match. The two have squared off 10 times over their careers, with both players earning five wins in those matches.
