Randstad (AMS:RAND) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of €1.62
Randstad N.V. (AMS:RAND) has announced that it will pay a dividend of €1.62 per share on the 2nd of April. The yield is still above the industry average at 4.0%.
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, Randstad's dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Generally, we think cash is more important than accounting measures of profit, so with the cash flows easily covering the dividend, we don't think there is much reason to worry.
The next 12 months could see EPS growing very rapidly. Assuming the dividend continues along the path it has been on, the payout ratio could get to 82% which is certainly still sustainable.
Check out our latest analysis for Randstad
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was €1.29, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €1.62. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.3% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Over the past five years, it looks as though Randstad's EPS has declined at around 27% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 3 warning signs for Randstad that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
