Health Ministry rolling out Hepili programme in schools in June

KOTA BARU: The Health Ministry will implement the Health Promotion in Learning Institutions (Hepili) programme package in stages across all schools starting this June.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the Hepili programme package would no longer be limited to schools with "young doctor clubs" only.
"Personally, I feel this programme proves that a healthy lifestyle can be nurtured from a young age with a friendly, heartfelt, and lasting impact... as the saying goes, 'to bend the bamboo, bend it while it's still a shoot'," he said.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Hepili Healthy and Prosperous Tour Programme with Didi and Friends for the East Coast Zone and the launch of the Hepili programme package here on Friday (May 30).
Elaborating further, Dr Dzulkefly said the Hepili Tour Programme with Didi and Friends was an edutainment approach that provided health education through entertainment to children aged five to 12.
"The popularity of Didi and Friends is leveraged to convey health messages in a friendly, easy-to-understand, and memorable way.
"Among the main achievements of this programme are the production of seven animated health videos that have collectively garnered over 28 million views on YouTube, with two of the most popular videos each exceeding 10 million views," he said.
He said field activities had also received an encouraging response with participation from over 135,000 children.
"This proves that cartoons and cheerful songs are not merely entertainment, but also effective educational tools that help build awareness, spark interest and encourage action, in line with the principle that health education is not just about knowing, but doing.
"To date, over 10,000 preschools, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools have implemented the 'Tunas Doktor Muda' (Preschool Young Doctor) and Kelab Doktor Muda programmes, while more than 80 institutions of higher learning have implemented the Healthy Student Programme. All of these use a peer guidance approach to foster a healthy lifestyle from the grassroots level," he said. – Bernama

580 blood donations earn woman prestigious 'Medal for Life' award

KUALA LUMPUR: The struggle of finding O+ blood donors for her mother, who needed a transfusion after undergoing abdominal surgery nearly five decades ago, was a turning point for Chin Jeck Leng to become a dedicated blood donor. Driven by the determination to prevent others from going through the same ordeal, the 65-year-old does not mind making the trip to the National Blood Centre in Jalan Tun Razak every two weeks, all in the name of saving more lives. The former head of Human Resource Management at a local bank has donated blood an astounding 580 times, an extraordinary achievement that not only earned her widespread recognition but also made her the first woman in the country to receive the prestigious Medal for Life award. "I was still a child during that surgery in 1980 and not eligible to donate. "It was challenging to find donors among family and relatives, as not many were willing to give blood. "And the only person willing to donate was my neighbour, who asked for payment. "That was when I realised how vital the sacrifice of a blood donor truly is, as it offers hope to those in need. "After all, blood is something money can't buy," she told reporters after receiving the award at the national-level World Blood Donor Day appreciation ceremony and the silver jubilee celebration of the National Blood Centre, which Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad launched. The Kuantan, Pahang native, who began donating blood at 18, said she remains in good health and free from any illnesses to this day. She expressed hope that more people, especially the younger generation, would come forward to become blood donors. Meanwhile, Anugerah Delima recipient Norhasri Mohamad Jadi, 44, has been donating blood since he was 28 due to a traumatic childhood experience. He was involved in a road accident at the age of three and suffered severe blood loss. He recalled that his family was returning to Kuala Lumpur from their hometown in Teluk Kemang, Negri Sembilan when the vehicle skidded while trying to avoid a lorry. "That's why I decided to become a blood donor. "I realised just how life-changing a donor's contribution can be," he said, adding that the crash left his right arm and leg permanently impaired. The O+ e-hailing driver has donated blood 99 times and was the only blood donor with a disability to receive an award at the ceremony. The Anugerah Delima is awarded to individuals who have made between 76 and 100 apheresis donations, whereonly specific components of the blood are collected, and the rest of the blood is returned to the donor's body during the same session, or31 to 40 whole blood donations. – Bernama

HAWANA 2025: IJN stresses importance of early heart disease detection

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Heart Institute (IJN)'s participation in the HAWANA 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur aims to raise awareness on the importance of early heart disease detection, particularly among media practitioners. IJN Corporate Social Responsibility coordinator, Nur Fatiha Azureen Roslan, said the collaboration with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) is a gesture of appreciation for the media's vital role in disseminating health information to the public. 'This initiative serves as a platform for IJN to directly engage with media professionals, raising awareness of heart health and encouraging them to be advocates for health education within their communities. 'Our key message is the importance of early detection. Heart attacks can strike without warning, even while on duty. Early screening can save lives and help prevent serious complications,' she told Bernama at the IJN booth today. IJN offered free basic health screenings, including blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks, along with initial consultations with medical officers at the booth. 'We also shared information with visitors about our cardiac care services, including preventive measures, early warning signs of heart attacks and the importance of regular check-ups,' said Nur Fatiha Azureen. As part of efforts to promote early detection, she said IJN is offering special discounts of between 15 and 30 percent on five heart screening packages at the IJN Wellness Centre. The discounted packages are: Basic Heart Screening (RM500 → RM350, 30 pct off); Essential Heart Screening (RM900 → RM765, 15 pct off); Heart Scan Screening (RM2,500 → RM2,000, 20 pct off); Premier Heart Screening (RM2,200 → RM1,760, 20 pct off) and Presidential Heart Screening (RM4,088 → RM3,270.40, 25 pct off) She added that IJN now offers a wide range of advanced cardiology treatments and facilities, including a 24-hour Heart Attack Centre and specialised expertise in interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery and paediatric heart care. 'Through this initiative, we hope media professionals will become more proactive about their heart health and, in turn, serve as vital messengers of health information within their communities,' she said. Meanwhile, public university lecturer P Selvarani, 59, praised the initiative to provide free heart screenings for media personnel during the HAWANA 2025 celebration, describing it as a meaningful gesture of appreciation for those in the field whose own health is often overlooked. She said the experience offered valuable insights that she hopes to share with her students, particularly on the challenges faced by media professionals, including work-related stress and the rapid advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). 'I truly appreciate IJN and Bernama's effort, not only for offering health screenings, but also for placing media workers at the heart of this initiative. It's a sincere form of recognition for their invaluable contributions,' she said. Another visitor, Rosidayu Sabran, 57, described IJN's basic health screening offered at the celebration as an effective way to raise early awareness about heart disease among the public. She said the initiative gave busy individuals a convenient opportunity to assess their health status through simple screenings that could serve as early indicators before seeking further medical attention if needed. The HAWANA 2025 celebration was officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today. Organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, the event aims to honour the vital role and contributions of journalists in the nation's development.
