Gill Maange More: Shubman Gill appointed India's new Test captain, Pant his deputy, for the tour of England

Economic Times24-05-2025

The prince has finally been crowned king. For long now, it was clear that Shubman Gill was one for the future. He was going to slot into one of the critical batting positions in the Test line-up, at No. 3 or No. 4, and be the pillar around which much else would be built.
But, several events beyond his control had to play out for Gill to be elevated to the Test captaincy. The sharp decline of Rohit Sharma's numbers, to the point that he dropped himself from the playing XI in Australia. The need for workload management with Jasprit Bumrah, who is far more valuable as a bowler than captain. And the indifferent form of Rishabh Pant ever since he made a comeback from a life-threatening car crash. So, here was Gill's moment.
It will be a baptism by fire like no other. There is no place to hide in a five-Test series in England and the examination will be fierce. To Gill's benefit, he has always had the temperament, and his time with the Gujarat Titans, watched closely by the wily Ashish Nehra, has allowed him to be as prepared for the top job in Indian cricket as he ever will be.The decision of the selectors — who might briefly have flirted with going back to Virat Kohli before he decided to call it quits, or KL Rahul as a stop-gap — shows that they have a long-term vision in mind. This, more than anything else, should allow Gill to view this as an opportunity rather than as a challenge. The first thing Gill needs, obviously, is runs. Without that, his place becomes increasingly untenable. The selectors have shown the vision to pick the captain from the best playing eleven, and now it is down to Gill to show that they have made the right call.
As tactician and leader, he will have to learn plenty on the job. And this is understandable given he is only 25 and has limited experience in leadership roles. But, there is no doubting the fact that he has all the attributes needed to make him the best man for the job. 'Obviously you discuss every option that's there. Over the last year or so, we have looked at Shubman at various times. Even when we played England last year. You take a lot of feedback from the dressing room as well,' explained Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors.'We've seen the improvement — I know it's T20 cricket for GT — but we take feedback from a lot of people, and we're hopeful that he's the guy who can... it's obviously going to be, like it always is, a high-pressure job. But we're hopeful we've picked the right guy. He's a terrific player and our best wishes for him.' Agarkar underscored the fact that the decision was not made with only the England tour in mind, which will give Gill the comfort that he is not going to be judged purely on initial results when the Indian team is in the middle of its biggest transition phase in recent memory. 'You don't pick captains for one or two tours,' Agarkar said when asked if the appointment was made keeping in mind the next cycle of the World Test Championship.'We want to invest in something that's going to help us going forward. You're always hoping that it's the right call. We've seen some progress over the last year or two with him. There's no doubt that it is going to be as tough as it gets, in a five-match series in England. Maybe he will have to learn on the job a little bit. But we're very confident with what he has to offer and that's the reason we have picked him.'
The selection committee, backed by the BCCI, has made what they believe to be the most prudent investment. What remains is for Gill to work with Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, and the team he has been given, to take Indian cricket forward.
SQUAD: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav

Smriti Mandhana becomes India's first all-format centurion in women's cricket

Nottingham [UK], June 28 (ANI): Indian opener Smriti Mandhana made history on Saturday, as she became the first-ever women's cricketer from her nation to slam centuries in all formats of international cricket. Mandhana reached this feat during her side's first T20I of five matches against England at Nottingham on Saturday. During the game, the left-handed opener smashed 112 in just 62 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 180.65. She is the only one besides her skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who is not playing the match due to a head injury, to score a T20I fifty for India in women's T20Is. Overall, across the world, only five players have achieved this massive accomplishment of being an all-format centurion in women's cricket, with England's Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt and Australia's Beth Mooney being others besides Mandhana. Coming to the match, England won the toss and opted to bowl first. A 77-run opening stand between Mandhana and Shafali Varma (20 in 22 balls, with three fours) kicked things off for India. A 94-run stand followed for the second wicket between Mandhana and Harleen Deol (43 in 23 balls, with seven fours) as India managed to reach 210/5 in 20 overs, with Lauren Bell (3/27) delivering some late strikes. England needs 211 to take a series lead. (ANI)

Dart 'affected' by backlash to Boisson odour jibe

Jun 28, 2025 11:52 PM IST Britain's Harriet Dart admits she has been affected by the backlash to her jibe about French opponent Lois Boisson's personal hygiene. HT Image Dart asked the umpire to tell Boisson to put on deodorant, saying "she smells really bad" during their match in a tournament in Rouen in April. The 28-year-old, who lost the first round tie in straight sets, was forced to apologise after her taunt sparked a torrent of criticism on social media. Dart and Boisson have experienced contrasting form since that ugly incident. Boisson went on an unexpected run to the semi-finals of her home Grand Slam at the French Open in June. But Dart has won just once in her last seven matches and the world number 71 said the abuse had played a role in her slump. "I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect me a little bit," she told reporters at Wimbledon on Saturday. "I'm human but also we all make mistakes and I just tried to look forward. I've gone through some difficulties these weeks. "I don't always share what I go through but I'm just looking forward and preparing the best I can. "I've also played some really good players so it's been tough, I've had a change of coaching as well, so there's been a lot going on." Dart, given a Wimbledon wild card entry, is back in the spotlight as she prepares to face Hungary's Dalma Galfi in the first round at the All England Club on Monday. Boisson lost in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying after being denied a wild card despite her French Open heroics. Dart is keen to consign her comment about Boisson to the past and she grew frustrated when the topic was raised on Saturday. "I don't know why we're still talking about this, it's been months now," she said. "I feel like I answered a lot of the questions that were asked of me and that's it. I really just want to put it behind me." smg/nf This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text. Mandhana, Charani shine in Nottingham as India women thrash England by 97 runs in 1st T20I

Smriti Mandhana smashed her maiden T20I century, becoming the first Indian woman to score a century across formats in international cricket, to help India post a mammoth 210/5. Debutant Shree Charani later helped bowl England out for a paltry 113 with a haul of 4/12. read more India players celebrate after England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is dismissed by debutant Shree Charani. Reuters Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana's graceful maiden T20 International hundred adorned India's smooth 97-run win over England in the opening match in Nottingham on Saturday. The visitors now lead the five-match T20I series 1-0. Mandhana (112, 62 balls) and Harleen Deol (43, 23 balls) added 94 runs for the second wicket as India posted a commanding 210 for five after being invited to bat. Skipper Nat Sciver Brunt (66, 42 balls) waged a lone battle for England, who were limited to 113 all out in 14.5 overs by the on-song Indian bowlers. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD For India, debutante left-arm spinner Shree Charani (4/12) was the most successful bowler, as there was nothing much left in England's innings after they lost half of the line-up inside the first 10 overs for a sub-100 score. Mandhana, who led the team in the absence of injured regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, stole the day with an innings that was a full-fledged display of her style, aggression and ability to play shots around the field. She gave the Indian innings some early impetus, making 77 runs with a struggling Shafali Varma (20, 22 balls), whose return to top-flight cricket after a gap of eight months was less than satisfactory. Mandhana was the dominant figure in that alliance off just 8.3 overs. Shafali's dismissal did not deter Mandhana as the left-hander raised a further 94 runs for the second wicket with an equally aggressive Harleen, who was dropped on 26 by Danny Wyatt-Hodge off off-spinner Alice Capsey near mid-wicket. Mandhana did not give any such chances to England, and she started off with three boundaries off left-arm spinner Linsey Smith in the fourth over, and hardly took her foot off the accelerator. Later, she also punished another left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone for two sixes in the seventh over as the Indian innings chugged along. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Mandhana brought up her fifty in 27 balls, and the next 50 came off just 24 balls. Mandhana soon went past 87, her previous best in T20Is, and touched the three-figure mark for the first time in her career that has 30 fifties. She reached the coveted milestone in style too, hammering pacer Lauren Bell for two consecutive boundaries. Her knock is the highest for India in T20Is, surpassing Harmanpreet's 103. At the other end, Deol relied more on sweeps to fetch boundaries, using the general lack of direction of English bowlers on the day till she fell to Bell, who was England's most successful bowler (3/27). Mandhana was eventually dismissed by Ecclestone but not before taking India to a position of strength. England tried to stage a late comeback as Bell removed Richa Ghosh (12) and Jemimah Rodrigues (0) in the 18th over but by then India were already closing in on the 200-run mark.
