Thierry Henry reveals why he left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007 - as he opens up on 'difficult' situation and family life at the time
Thierry Henry has dived into the reasons he left Arsenal for £16million in 2007
His exit for Barcelona came as a shock after eight prolific years in London
LISTEN NOW: It's All Kicking Off! Is Ruben Amorim too honest?
Thierry Henry has opened up on his shock exit from Arsenal in 2007, insisting he wanted to 'compete' rather than stay in his 'comfort zone'.
The striker left London for Barcelona for £16million that summer, suddenly calling time on a prolific eight-season spell which saw him bang in 226 goals.
He cried when he left the Emirates and was initially told he would be fourth choice, but he was determined to make a success of himself and win the Champions League.
'It's not always easy to have it a certain way at a club [Arsenal], and then you decide to go for various reasons that I mentioned so many times,' Henry told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.
'You arrive at a club that won the Champions League, with [Samuel] Eto'o in the middle, [Lionel] Messi on the right, and Ronaldinho on the left. I've been told that I'm going to start on the bench by Frank Rijkaard, but I said I'm coming – I need to battle.
'I look for that challenge every day of the week, that's what I need – I'd rather compete than be in the comfort zone. To go there, to re-learn to play a certain way.

The Frenchman spent eight seasons with the Gunners but left suddenly for £16million
He had three seasons in Spain, winning seven trophies including the Champions League
He was going through a divorce at the time from his first wife Claire Merry (right)
'I was getting divorced, and I arrived there injured, learning a new language, a new style of play – people didn't care, and that's how it should be. It's life, you have to find a way.
'At the time, with the divorce, I didn't see my daughter too much because of what it was, and you have to perform.
'People are looking at you because you're the new guy – what are you going to do? What are you going to show us, we won the Champions League here and you've never won it – that's how it is, and I understand that and respect that.
'If you arrive at a club and people welcome you, so be it – but they don't have to welcome you. Show them that you can be here and perform. Was it difficult? Yes, it was.'
Henry had been married to Claire Merry since 2003 and the duo had a home in London and a two-year-old daughter.
But a divorce was granted in September 2007 and Henry married Andrea Rajacic, his current wife with whom he has three children, in 2011.
Henry's decision to leave Arsenal did pay off - he won seven trophies at Barca, including two LaLiga titles and the 2008-09 Champions League.
That team, which beat Manchester United 2-0 in the final, is widely considered one of the greatest of all time, with Lionel Messi on the right wing, Samuel Eto'o through the middle, and Henry on the left.
Henry had to learn to be adaptable and selfless, being moved to the left side, but cemented his reputation as one of the era's greatest forwards by lifting the Champions League - something Arsenal failed to do in 2006 when they reached the final.

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Gunners ‘make contact' with Rogers, Rodrygo wage demands revealed, Martinelli exit possible
Isak tipped for Arsenal Jamie O'Hara has claimed that Arsenal should sign Newcastle star Aleksander Isak over Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. He told Grosvenor Sport: 'The obvious position to strengthen for Arsenal is a striker – they need to get one in. 'They need someone big and strong who can get them 20 goals a season. For me, Kai Havertz just isn't the man for the job. 'Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko are the obvious choices in the striker department for them. However, the trouble with strikers who come over from other leagues is that they fail to hit the ground running – particularly players from the Bundesliga and Liga Portugal. There's a massive difference between playing there and in the Premier League. 'I think clubs should be buying Premier League proven players who have been doing it week in, week out already. That's why I think Manchester United have been quite clever by signing Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha – we all know they're going to work for them. 'With that in mind, if I were Arsenal, I'd go and get Isak. I know it will be hard because Newcastle are in the Champions League, but Arsenal are a bigger club than Newcastle and could definitely tempt him.'

Birmingham to host daytime rave for mums
A rave tailor-made for mothers is being held outside London for the first Saturday, Hockley Social Club in Birmingham is hosting Mums That Rave, a daytime dance party that aims to "smash stereotypes of motherhood and inspire mothers to lead a fulfilling life".It was launched by DJ Nikki Beatnik, after the birth of her child motivated her to prove that motherhood did not mean she had to lose her identity."I, for one, refuse to disappear into a life of school runs, stripy jumpers and school WhatsApp groups," she said. Since the first Mums That Rave party in 2019, there have been 22 events - until now, all in raves attract mothers from 18 to 60, although all women are welcome."It's a safe space for women and mums to claim their space on the dance floor," said DJ Nikki. "As a woman in music - I've been in the music industry my whole adult life - and as a mum as well, I know it's really important that we have these safe spaces."It's really important for mums' mental health, as well, to have fun, to have somewhere to dress up and feel comfortable and dance - it's about community." DJ Nikki said she had long been passionate about giving greater representation to mums in the "youth-obsessed" music industry, continuing to run club nights and tour with the likes of Kelis and All Saints until four days before she gave birth in 2014."When I gave birth, I realised that a few of the big clients and brands that I'd always worked with had gone quiet and more or less stopped booking me," she said. "The only thing I could really put it down to was now that I was a mum."When you're a DJ, you kind of look the same for years - but when you become a mum DJ that puts you in a different category." She decided to create something similar to her previous club nights, but at a time of day which suited women who wanted to get home for their children's bedtime, or who had to get up the next morning."It's the hardest demographic I've ever promoted parties to," she said, "because mums have so much scheduling, they take on such a big mental load."So to take an afternoon off and spend their money with me, I know I'm going to have to make that afternoon absolutely amazing for them."And the vibes have to be brilliant." Guests can expect what DJ Nikki describes as "non-mum-branded" music such as drum and bass, hip-hop, R&B, and dancehall are encouraged to attend in groups or solo, as DJ Nikki said she always made an effort to introduce new faces to regular have been coming to her parties since the start and have forged long-term friendships, she ultimate aim is to show women that motherhood does not define them."Mums that Rave really is a metaphor for the bigger picture of life, of grabbing life by the disco balls, and not thinking that everything's over for you," she explained. "Being able to pivot to another career, or another job, or make new friends."And get out there, dress up and look fabulous." Mums That Rave Birmingham takes place at Hockley Social Club from 14:00 to 18:00 BST on Saturday 7 June, with tickets available on the Mums That Rave website.
