'Sledging fired up Virat Kohli, but it rattled Shubman Gill': Ex-India cricketer
NEW DELHI: Former India batter
Sanjay Manjrekar
has thrown his weight behind India captain
Shubman Gill
, backing the young leader to bounce back in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, with India trailing 1-2 in the series. While praising Gill's leadership, Manjrekar also drew comparisons with former India skipper
Virat Kohli
, noting that Gill's aggression differs from Kohli's.
Gill, known for his calm on-field demeanour, showed a rare flash of anger during the Lord's Test when England opener Zak Crawley took too long to face a delivery, causing visible frustration in the Indian camp.

Gill, clearly annoyed by the delay and interruptions, was caught on the stump mic shouting: "Grow some f**** b***s."
Commenting on the incident, Manjrekar said on JioHotstar: 'When Gill walked out to bat on Day 4, I expected England to give it back to him.
After all, he had lost his temper earlier, and that's part of the game. What disappointed me, though, was how it seemed to affect Shubman Gill. When something similar happened with Virat Kohli, he would get even more fired up and become a better batter. But with Gill, the effect wasn't the same.
He came out looking tentative."
Manjrekar further explained how the English players' sledging may have played a role in Gill's uncertain approach at the crease: "Some of the sledging by English players included personal attacks.

This might have been unfamiliar territory for Gill, especially considering that Indian players today often receive a friendly reception from touring sides. But Gill didn't seem up for the challenge. The way he batted reflected that, and I have no doubt there's a connection between the sledging and his uncertainty at the crease.

Injuries, rain, availability concerns: Team India on edge in Manchester | Exclusive updates ahead of 4th Test
Despite the criticism, Manjrekar remains optimistic about Gill's overall progress and the road ahead: 'Gill is a young captain, and he has already surpassed expectations, both with the bat and as a leader.
The scoreline might be close, but India has won a Test match, and that's credit to how he has gone about it. This eight-day break comes at a perfect time for him. He has good people around him, and his father, more than anyone, would know what kind of personality Shubman really is, whether he's a potential Virat Kohli or Dhoni, or somewhere in between.
"

"I'm guessing somewhere in between. He has to find his own path now, a path that enhances both, his leadership and his batting. And, if there is anything coming in the way of either, he's got to quickly let go of it. In the first Test, he was leaning heavily on
Rishabh Pant
and others. In the second, he started asserting himself, and the results followed. Now, after this little setback in the third Test, we might see the best of Shubman Gill, the captain, in Manchester. Hopefully, we'll also see the best of Shubman Gill, the batter,' Manjrekar added.
India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, will look to level the series when the fourth Test begins at Old Trafford on July 23.

Ex-England batter hails Jaiswal's 'huge character' as India opener achieves major milestone at Old Trafford
Yashasvi Jaiswal brought up his third fifty-plus score in the ongoing tour of England on the opening day of the fourth Test in Manchester. In the process, he also brought up a key career milestone. read more Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrates after completing his half-century on the opening day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Reuters Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his fine run in the ongoing Test series against England, bringing up a third fifty-plus score in four matches during the fourth Test at Manchester's Old Trafford on Wednesday. And in the process, he also went past the milestone of a 1,000 Test against England. Which means that the left-handed opener, who plays for Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League respectively, has scored half of his Test runs against one team since making his debut in July 2023. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Trott heaps praise on Jaiswal on Day 1 of Manchester Test Former England batter Jonathan Trott, for one, praised the 23-year-old for his 'huge character' and for his ability to adapt to the five-day game and be a run-machine for India across formats. 'He's found a different way to bat in Test cricket, and for me that shows huge character, and the way he thinks about the game. And that for me, is a huge positive for Indian cricket,' Trott said on JioHotstar during the lunch interval on Wednesday. Jaiswal, however, couldn't convert the solid start into a big score on the opening day of the Manchester Test as he was dismissed by Liam Dawson, who struck just two overs into his first Test appearance in eight years. Jaiswal and opening partner KL Rahul had batting through the morning session unscathed, taking India to 78/0 after 26 overs. The visitors, however, found themselves reduced to 149/3 at the end of the afternoon session, with Jaiswal departing shortly after Rahul's dismissal off Chris Woakes' bowling and England captain Ben Stokes getting rid of his Indian counterpart Shubman Gill shortly before tea. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India currently are trailing England 1-2 in the five-match series, having suffered defeats at Headingley (five wickets) and Lord's (22 runs) along with a 336-run series-leveling victory at Edgbaston. For them to win their first Test series in England in 18 years, they will have to register a maiden victory at Old Trafford.

Ravi Shastri Cracks Everyone Up With Wholesome Jab At Farokh Engineer; Nasser Hussain Joins In: WATCH
Curated By : Siddarth Sriram Last Updated: July 23, 2025, 20:30 IST Ravi Shastri with Farokh Engineer (PTI Photo) Cricket often transcends the boundary ropes, and the first day of the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford in Manchester was a perfect example. While the on-field action drew attention, it was a legendary off-field presence—Farokh Engineer—that truly lit up the day. Old Trafford witnessed a historic moment as Engineer, the iconic Indian wicketkeeper and Lancashire stalwart, became the first Indian cricketer to have a stand named after him in England. His name now adorns a stand at the ground alongside another celebrating West Indies legend Sir Clive Lloyd—marking a proud moment for Indian cricket history. Now 87 years old and recently recovered from aortic valve replacement surgery in June, Engineer has returned to his routine and made a high-profile appearance as a VIP guest during the ongoing Lord's Test. His presence at Old Trafford during the Manchester Test added a nostalgic layer to the day's events. As the broadcast camera caught Engineer in the stands on Day 1, the commentary box lit up with warmth and humor. Ravi Shastri, spotting the former gloveman on screen, couldn't resist sharing a fond and cheeky tribute. 'Farokh (Engineer). A real pin-up boy in the '60s and '70s. Hugely popular, and he's not changed over the years. A great storyteller and a voracious eater even now. At lunch, his plate will be full," Shastri quipped, clearly speaking with nothing but affection and admiration. Not one to miss a beat, Nasser Hussain jumped in with a perfectly timed joke that sent the commentary team into laughter. 'He'll be just behind you in that all-day buffet queue, Ravi," Hussain said, poking fun at Shastri's own famously hearty appetite. It was a moment of levity and camaraderie—reminiscent of the spirit that has made cricket more than just a game for fans around the world. India In Control During Initial Stages of Fourth Test Back on the pitch, India made a solid start to the fourth Test. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul safely negotiated a probing spell from Chris Woakes, guiding India to 78 without loss at lunch on a cloudy Wednesday morning. Despite the fact that no team has ever won at Old Trafford after choosing to bowl first, England captain Ben Stokes opted to send India in on a pitch with early movement. Swipe Left For Next Video View all The strategy seemed to pay off shortly after the lunch break as both Indian openers were dismissed in quick succession, allowing Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan to take center stage. With the momentum in India's favor early on, the middle-order pair will aim to consolidate and build on the platform laid by the openers.
