Meet the 14-year-old Irish girl spending her summer as a circus aerial acrobat

Irish Examiner02-08-2025
This summer, while your average teenager might be happy with the odd babysitting gig, one 14-year-old has found a more unconventional way to earn some much-needed pocket money — flying through the air as an aerial acrobat.
Isabella Gerbola made her big top debut last year as one of Ireland's youngest circus acrobats.
From a young age she had been limbering up with splits and backflips while dreaming of performing with her family's business, Circus Gerbola.
Now, since she got her summer holidays, her days have been spent performing up and down the country — wowing audiences young and old.
The act, she says, has been a long time in the making. According to her circus colleagues, Isabella has spent years gathering inspiration for her signature aerial moves.

Many of them joke that Isabella was born to be a star. The third-year student of Athboy Community School in Meath hit the headlines shortly after she was born in a 4X4 while en route to the Coombe Hospital.
Her father, Mikey Gerbola, pulled over after taking a wrong turn in Blanchardstown in the early hours of New Year's Day, 2011. However, he ended up having to deliver the baby himself after things moved much faster than expected.
Isabella continues to astound her father Mikey and mum Tara to this day as her star in the circus world is continuing to rise. The teen admits she doesn't want her summer holidays to end.
'When I'm at school all I really want to do is go home to the circus,' she told the Irish Examiner.
'I was born into the circus so I'd like to stay in it. One day this circus will be passed on to my brothers and I. It's where I always want to be.'

Isabella says she loves the buzz she gets from the audience when swooping through the air.
'I don't know what I love most about the aerial act. It's great to have good feedback from the audience. If a show is full then you tend to get a lot more clapping.
When it's emptier on the other hand, people don't tend to interact as much.
It really gives you a boost when you have a lively audience and that makes you feel more confident.
"It's always nice to hear that someone loved the show and enjoyed your act.'
Isabella enjoys the freedom of the circus ring and of being a performer.
'I wouldn't say I'm a different person in the ring but it does allow me to express myself more. The only time I get stage fright is when I'm adding a trick or something new to my act. I'm always really hoping that I'll get it right.'
14-year-old Isabella Gerbola: 'I really love moving around because you get to see so many places that you wouldn't normally see. For me that's the best part... There's a lovely beach in Achill and I enjoy the amusements in Tramore.' Picture: Dan Linehan
She said the best thing about circus is the opportunity it gives her to travel.
'It might get boring without the travelling. I really love moving around because you get to see so many places that you wouldn't normally see. For me that's the best part.
'I remember during covid I really missed that part of it. Every place we go has something different.
"There's a lovely beach in Achill and I enjoy the amusements in Tramore.
'I've met so many people from all over the world through circus who have become lifelong friends.'
Isabella, who has two older brothers named Blake and Michael, said many important life events have been celebrated in the ring.

'Halloween parties, Christmas parties, engagement parties, and baby showers have all been celebrated in the ring. We set out tables and everybody brings food. It's really nice to see the ring all lit up with lights.'
Circus Gerbola's general manager David Fitzgerald praised Isabella adding: 'No matter how many times you practice beforehand, performing in front of a huge crowd is a frightening thing.
'From the time she was watching the show from her buggy, Isabella has grown up with some of the biggest circus stars in the world and performed under her family's big top.
'It's great to see Isabella fulfilling her destiny.'

My Saturday with Dáithi Ó Sé: 'When you've nothing on your conscience, it's easy to sleep!'

06.30 I get out of bed around 6.30 as my son Ógie comes bombing into the bedroom at that time. There's usually one episode of Young Sheldon watched at that hour of the morning. 08.00 I'm in the gym for 8am. I'll exercise for about half an hour. I'm hitting 50 next year. I made a conscious decision around Christmas that I needed to start minding myself. I got into a routine and it's not a bad one to be in at all. Not only do I feel great but I can really feel the difference on the days I don't get to the gym so I try to get there most mornings, particularly on weekends. I do 10 minutes on the crosstrainer, 10 minutes stretching, and any machine that's in front of me at 30kg weight. My favourite part is going down to the sauna — I'll be looking at all the people going into the cold showers wondering, 'What is wrong with these people?' Usually I start a fitness regime at the start of the summer, but because I started months ago, I'm under less pressure this year [for the Rose of Tralee]. The festival is always a bit of craic. The real work starts for us once we are in Tralee — there's at least a two-week build-up and I'll be away for about ten days. Rita and Ógie will come down towards show time and this year I think Ógie will be in the Dome for the first time, so that's exciting. 09.00 Every Saturday morning myself and my son have the same discussion about how he doesn't want to go for breakfast because he is too tired. Then two minutes down the road we are laughing and having the craic. We go to the Chef's Cafe in Craughwell — they do the finest omelettes in the world. We then drive to the Grind Coffee and Food Hub in Briarhill for coffee and hot chocolate and we'll pick up whatever we need for dinner later that day. 12.30 We get home at around 12.30 and then I am left alone to have the nicest hour that I have all day when I fall asleep on the sofa for a nap. My wife is a bit jealous of me — she'll tell me to go up to bed but going to bed would be a totally different thing altogether. There's a lovely groove in the couch where I can lie on my left hand side and my left arse cheek is wedged in a bit. I feel I deserve this nap — it's part of what the world gives me. When you've nothing on your conscience, it's easy to sleep! Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas, pictured at the official launch of the Rose of Tralee International Festival 2024 in Airfield Estate. Picture Andres Poveda 14.30 At 2.30pm, fully refreshed, I start thinking about solving some problems for people in my Irish Examiner column. This takes me up to about 5.30pm at which point I may go for a cycle if somebody will come with me. 17.30 Saturday evenings can vary and I'm willing to go along with anything the others want to do. In the summer, if we are going for a cycle we'll take the back road to Gort which takes about 30 minutes and we'll get an ice cream and cycle back out again. On darker evenings, we'll have the fire on and be watching something on TV together. We rarely go out for dinner — when I am not on the road we like to stay at home together. The barbecue is on 365 days a year. My wife Rita is an exceptional cook and an exceptional baker and I exploit that! I am spoiled rotten. We might have family over from America or my brother and his family might stop in too — we are always out and about all week, between soccer and music and work, so at the weekend we like to stay at home. 19.00 Once a month I might go for a couple of pints — I'll be home by 9pm. I'll go to Mullins' in Gort or McCarthy's in Kilbeacanty or the Village Inn in Kilchreest. Rita doesn't drink and I never drink at home — it has never appealed to me. If I am at home I'll have a cup of tea and we'll watch something on Netflix — at the moment it's Chicago P.D. 21.30 I go to bed at 9 or 9.30pm every night even at the weekends — I'll be falling asleep on the couch so as soon as I hit the pillow I'll be asleep. I have no problem sleeping through the night. Dáithí Ó Sé hosts The Rose of Tralee with Kathryn Thomas. Now in its 65th year, The Rose of Tralee will be available to watch for free, live and on-demand for audiences in Ireland and around the world at 8pm on Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 19, on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

Speaking on his breakfast show this morning, Carl announced he would be the Master of Ceremonies at the Rose of Tralee which will air live from Co Kerry on August 18 and 19. Explaining what his role would entail, he told his co-stars: "I'm absolutely buzzing for it. "On the night, I'm the person who's responsible for introducing all 32 Roses on stage, telling you about them, where they're from." Later, he took to his social media to reveal his surprising link to the annual event. The dad-of-three shared a photo of himself looking very dapper in a tuxedo as he walked the carpet of the Rose Of Tralee festival 2016. He revealed that nine years ago he was an escort for two of that year's roses; Donegal and Scotland. Following the event in 2016, he spoke to the Irish Examiner, where he reflected on the experience. He said: "I'm absolutely exhausted, physically and emotionally, but in a good way. "Over the week, we all bonded so well. We've had an absolute ball. 2025 Rose of Tralee hopefuls reveal their stories ahead of the contest "I've never laughed as much in life. I've made 130 new friends — I'd highly recommend it." Earlier this month, Carl opened up to his wife on their podcast about a mistake he had previously never owned up to. HOST CONFESSION Carl and Aisling recently launched their very own podcast called How Are Ya Lovie?. On the most recent episode, the dad-of-three wanted to get something off his chest that he had been holding in for years. Speaking to Aisling, he said: "Can I tell you something now that I've never told you before? "It was during Covid when Davy was born. So you were all washing your bloody shopping and everything and wiping it all down." Carl then revealed that he "opened the wrong pack" of wipes and instead of using baby wipes on his son, he used an antibacterial one when changing his nappy. Aisling remarked: "No wonder why his skin is so sensitive." Carl explained how stressed it made him saying: "No and in fairness I remember the next day his a** was red raw and I was so afraid to tell you. "I was like she's gonna kick my a**. She's going to absolutely kill me'. "And every day you'd call my name, I was like 'She's found out, she's figured it out. I don't know how but she's figured it out'."

Posh couple used to £12k breaks last five minutes on Zante strip night out in Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday

The wealthy duo have had 29 holidays in the two years they've been together POOR SHOW Posh couple used to £12k breaks last five minutes on Zante strip night out in Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday A RICH COUPLE used to champagne dinners on a yacht lasted five minutes on the Zante strip in Channel 5's Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday. James and Isabella, both in their 30s, lead a glamorous life in Barcelona, and have had a whopping 29 holidays during their two-year relationship. 4 James and Isabella lead a lavish life in Barcelona Credit: Channel 5 4 They were not impressed with the budget Zante accomodation Credit: Channel 5 4 Isabella struggled to cope with the party lifestyle Credit: Channel 5 Superyacht broker James and lawyer Isabella think nothing of spending £12,000 on a single trip, so got the shock of their life when they were sent on a budget break to the Zante strip. The jetsetting duo, who describe being in a nightclub as their personal hell were horrified to discover that they would be staying in a "stinky" self-catered apartment right in the centre of the Greek Island's party capital Laganas. Used to five-star comfort, the couple described the bed as like "laying on a piece of wood", and the bathroom as "disgusting". "I believe this is way out of anybody's comfort zone", Brazilian beauty Isabella said, looking visibly repulsed. The couple considered throwing the towel in before they'd even stayed one night in the hotel, despite their holiday companions, cash strapped single mums Gemma and Stacey describing the place as "lovely". The Hertfordshire besties, both 44, and the posh couple got off to a rocky start, with James declaring to the camera that the women are "not our type of people". And James and Isabella couldn't believe their ears when they found out that their budget for the trip would be just 135 euros. "That's usually what we spend on one dinner", Isabella said. After probing more in to the couple's lavish lifestyle, Gemma and Stacey, who both struggle to feed the six kids they have between them on their £1000 a month Universal Credit money, were left gobsmacked to learn that James and Isabella have £5,000 a month in disposable income. Used to dining on salmon and avocado, the wealthy duo were less than impressed when party lovers Gemma and Stacey ordered them both a full English. Single mum surviving on just £125 a MONTH after bills fights tears at £250-a-night hotel on Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday "It's not healthy", said Isabella, turning her nose up at the fry up. However, the couple were given a reality check after seeing Gemma and Stacey, who sometimes can't even afford a tin of beans, haggle to get their breakfast's cheaper. "It's not an easy life for them", Isabella realised. Despite at first being unwilling to join in, Isabella and James did admit to having fun at a budget day out to a waterpark. However, their worst nightmare came true when Gemma and Stacey dragged them out to a night on the strip. After being disgusted by the neon lights and cheap shots on offer at the nightclubs, Isabella and James decided to make a French exit before even entering a single bar. Sick of living on the cheap, the couple blew their strict budget, and spent £40 a takeaway. "This is the best part of the holiday", James said. Despite admitting that the trip wasn't up their street at all, the posh pair did admit that the break had really made them think about the value of money.
