
‘The delivery man arrived with the ashes in a gift bag' – why are so many people opting out of traditional funerals?
During an online consultation with 'death specialists' Farewill, Hayley was quoted £1,062 for a direct cremation, more than £3,000 cheaper than the current average cost of a basic funeral. The only catch was that no one would attend the cremation, aside from those paid to carry it out. It seemed a cruel choice to some, who could not get their heads around the idea that there would not be a funeral to attend. But Hayley explained why it seemed like the perfect option: they could obtain her father's ashes without fuss and hold their own, intimate ceremony on the banks of the River Wye, where Cliff had loved to fish.
Although Cliff died in a hospital in Powys, Wales, he was cremated 140 miles away at a crematorium near Exeter. His ashes then travelled 220 miles east, with no limousine cortege in sight, to our home in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. The delivery man arrived holding a gift bag containing Hayley's dad in one hand and a small bunch of flowers in the other.
Farewill's co-founder Dan Garrett is something of a disruptor within the death industry. Death first inspired him when he was growing up in Golders Green in north London, where his family home backed on to the local crematorium.
'The walk with my family was always to the crematorium,' he says. 'It was absolutely beautiful; I reckon it left some kind of resonance in my head.' He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2015 looking for a gap in the startup market, and launched Farewill the same year. He felt that the funeral industry, with its monopolising practices based around local, family-run funeral directors, was ripe for revolution. Farewill branched out from its initial offer of online will-writing services (usually carried out by solicitors) after it noticed a pattern emerging among its customers.
'We were speaking to 20,000 people a year,' he says. 'And we had a box [on the online form] that said: 'What do you want to do with your funeral?'' And probably 80% of what people were writing was: 'I just want no fuss, don't wear black, nothing traditional, just something that represents me.'' Garrett realised this was 'a great business opportunity'.
Farewill began doing direct cremations in December 2019, a few months before Covid hit the UK. The popularity of its services did not peter out with the pandemic, and now 20% of bodies are disposed of by direct cremation. Farewill rivals Pure Cremation recently predicted that 50% of the UK population will choose direct cremation within 20 years. Business has been bolstered by a generation of tech-savvy consumers navigating a cost of living crisis and a stagnant economy. It is not exclusive to the UK: the US is experiencing a similar shift in the funeral industry, as detailed by the New York Times.
According to the Cremation Society, up to 80% of people are cremated in the UK, which is above the average globally – although this is still behind Japan, where almost everyone is cremated – but it hasn't always been the case. As Jessica Mitford (who, like David Bowie, opted for direct cremation) wrote in The American Way of Death, there were just three cremations in the UK in 1885 – the first year of its legalisation, after a hard-fought period of campaigning. Today, the vast majority of the UK would rather be incinerated, perhaps for reasons similar to those articulated by George Bernard Shaw in the 1940s: 'Earth burial, a horrible practice, will some day be prohibited by law, not only because it is hideously unaesthetic, but because the dead would crowd the living off the Earth if it could be carried out to its end of preserving our bodies for their resurrection on an imaginary day of judgment.'
Despite its growing popularity, fightback is brewing against direct cremation, nicknamed 'burn and return' by those who oppose it. 'Direct cremation interrupts both this sacred understanding of the dead body and the sense that it has deep and powerful spiritual value,' wrote Anne Richards, public policy adviser to the Church of England, in June. 'Whether offered overtly or not, such a no-fuss service undermines the sense that a dead body is worthy of respect, care, dignity and love. Why spend money on something worthless?'
Writing in the Spectator, Ysenda Maxtone Graham, in a piece that described the process as 'a lonely end for one's mother or father, or indeed oneself – and actually quite expensive for what happens, which is basically waste disposal', said: 'You can see how – as with assisted dying – the elderly could be pressurised into going for this option by the death-averse, non-religious and hard-up young.'
But looked at another way, direct cremation has demystified an industry that has long been accused of overcharging grieving families. The 'cost of dying' in the UK, including professional fees for administering the estate, a simple funeral service, and all optional extras like the party or wake, has this year hit a record high of £9,797, according to Sun Life's annual study, while 6% of funerals are now crowdfunded.
In February 2025, Farewill was sold to Dignity, one of the largest funeral companies in the UK, which operates 45 crematoria. In the office of Dignity's Bentley crematorium, just outside Brentwood, Essex, manager Ian Best says he still calls direct cremations 'unattended cremations' out of habit. It is a hangover from the days when the only cremations without family or friends were 'pauper's funerals', paid for by the council if there were no relatives to cover the cost (thanks to the cost of living crisis, the number of such funerals, now known as public health funerals, has risen by 47% in England in the last seven years). Before the pandemic, Best says, unattended cremations only happened at Bentley every three or four months. Now, they count for roughly a third of all cremations that take place there.
'It's definitely changed the industry massively, and I think we're learning as we go,' says Best. 'It's uncharted territory for us.' The biggest change, he says, 'is just the fact that people aren't here. I'm so used to being here, looking out of the window, seeing the car park full up, and hearing people – to then think, oh, there's no one outside, but I'm still attending a funeral.'
But in many other ways, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a direct cremation and a service attended by mourners. 'I always emphasise the fact that we do it exactly the same here, regardless of whether it's attended or unattended,' says Best. 'You'll still always come through the front [of the chapel], we'll always have music on, we'll always bow, we'll always have the curtains, there'll always be that element of respect.' Imagining it reminds me of another echo of the pandemic – catching highlights of Liverpool's winning Premier League campaign when there were no crowds; all that ceremony, but with no one to share it with.
I first arrived at Bentley shortly after a direct cremation and family members were standing outside chatting, having said their final goodbyes. I ask Ian if he minds people attending direct cremations in this manner, when they are advertised as 'unattended' (and this is reflected in the price). Quite the contrary, he says: when he noticed them congregating, he turned the speakers on outside and played music as they watched the funeral directors take in the coffin. 'Theoretically, an unattended funeral should just be the funeral director bringing the loved one in the coffin: there's no family,' he says, but he is open to families watching, and sometimes invites people in to sit at the back, to help them grieve for their loved one. 'I'm not going to turn people away. It doesn't cost me anything.'
Some funeral directors suggest that the way direct cremations are sold is too pushy. Pure Cremation is one of the country's biggest direct cremation providers, with an enormous crematorium in Andover, Hampshire, and a multimillion-pound TV advertising spend, with commercials shown primarily during daytime hours to catch the retired demographic most likely to buy funeral plans. Their adverts are all over social media, too. I saw one advert promising a free afternoon tea, up to the value of £50, when buying a direct cremation through the company ('Offer ends 31 August').
The rise of direct cremation, as well as the backlash, goes some way to addressing a fundamental question about death: what, or who, are funerals for?
'Funerals have always been for the living,' says Martin Stibbards, whose family funeral directors in Essex offer everything from a full horse-drawn funeral cortege that harks back to their Victorian roots to their own direct cremation service. 'You don't know you're at your funeral, but your relatives do.' Stibbards says that the genius of the new direct cremation companies is that they have flipped the decision from the family to the living, directing their advertising towards those making their own funeral plans. 'Grief is difficult. You might think it's all very good when you're sitting in your living room and you're not dying and thinking: 'Yeah, I'll just sign up, this is going to be great for my family.' But when the reality happens and you're whisked off somewhere without anybody knowing where you are … grief can be very complex.'
At Bentley, Best ushers me behind a curtain to see the cremation chamber. Coffins from unattended and attended services wait to be cremated.
It feels inadequate, somehow – but not because of the cremation process itself. Rather any attempt to mark the end of a life feels unsatisfactory. And nothing – direct cremation, a princely burial after a multi-vehicle cortege, or lighting up the sky with fireworks like Hunter S Thompson – can change that.

Appeal for £40,000 to protect Garth Pier in Bangor
A £40,000 appeal has been launched to repair and safeguard one of Wales' best-known Friends of Garth Pier in Bangor, Gwynedd, want to complete essential work on the 1896-built pier's substructure in order to "protect it for generations to come".The 1,500-ft (457m) Grade II-listed structure, the second longest pier in Wales, boasts views over the Menai Strait, Anglesey, Llandudno and the mountains of Eryri, also known as 2022 it was also named the National Piers Society's pier of the year, with judges saying it "boasts the best panorama of views of any pier in the UK". Having faced threats of demolition over the years, it is owned and maintained by Bangor city council, who bought the pier for 1p in 1975.A £1mrestoration programme to restore parts of the structure was completed in 2022, with pier supporters noting these latest works would form the last phase of the project. Vice chairwoman of Friends of Garth Pier, Vanessa Hawkins, said the £40,000 from the appeal would be matched with funding from the city council."The substructure isn't a very exciting part as its underneath the planks, so you can't see it, but its vitally important to keep it safe," she said. "The pier has always been a place that local people come to for fun, the children come to crab... its really important to the community and a lovely place to be," she said the current renovation process started in 2017 as the substructure had not been touched since the pier's previous reopening in 1988."Since then Bangor city council has spent £2.2m on the substructure, and now we just have the last two phases to finish out of six in total."We're very excited that just £40,000, with council match funding, will get this finished."On a wet and windy Monday morning the city's mayor Medwyn Hughes said he was confident the target would be reached."The climate is changing, the environment isn't favourable to a structure like this so the plan is that we strengthen the structure underneath the platform," he said. "A day like today is about showing that we need the money to do that." "We've completed three quarters of the work, this is the last quarter to make it safe for the next 25 years," he added."The residents of Bangor have put their hands in their pockets over many years... its part of our history and heritage."The pier is the attraction as far as I'm concerned, we had over 100,000 visitors last year which is quite a number."Last week we had a couple from Hungary who found the pier were thrilled to bits with the place."Its a fantastic place to come."

UK's first female archbishop tells of how she hid her sexuality for decades
The new archbishop of Wales, the Most Rev Cherry Vann, has told of how she kept her sexuality secret for decades as part of her struggle to be accepted as a female minister in the Anglican communion. Speaking to the Guardian on Thursday, the day after her appointment, Vann, 66, said that without the strong belief that God had called her to the priesthood she 'would not have survived' her journey through the ranks of the church. Vann became one of the first female priests to be ordained in England in 1994. Now, as the UK's first female and first openly gay archbishop, and the first openly lesbian and partnered bishop to serve as a primate within the Anglican communion, she has well and truly broken the stained glass ceiling. 'It happens that I've lived in a time that's meant that I'm a trailblazer, but I'm not a campaigner,' the Leicestershire-born archbishop said during an interview at the Church in Wales's offices in central Cardiff. 'I'm not somebody to be out there all the time but I do seek to be true to what I think God's asking of me.' Working in the Church in Wales since 2020 has been very different from the many years Vann spent at the Church of England, she said, as clergy are permitted to be in same-sex civil partnerships. In the Anglican church in England, same-sex relationships are technically allowed, but gay clergy are expected to remain celibate. Upon becoming bishop of Monmouth five years ago, Vann publicly disclosed her civil partnership with Wendy Diamond, her partner of 30 years, for the first time. 'Other people in England were braver than I was and made their sexuality clear. A lot of them suffered the consequences of that, certainly when going forward for ordination,' Vann said. 'For years we kept our relationship secret because I worried about waking up and finding myself outed on the front page of a newspaper. Now, Wendy joins me everywhere, and when I take services, it's just normal. But in England she had to stay upstairs if I had a meeting in the house.' Being a woman in the church had been difficult enough, she added. 'You can hide your sexuality, up to a point, but you can't hide being a woman. There was a lot of nastiness; the men were angry, they felt they had been betrayed.' Vann said in the 1990s, she and a handful of other female priests began meeting for prayer and conversation with male colleagues opposed to their ordination. 'It was awful, it was really difficult for all of us, but we stuck at it,' she said. Over time, the hostility dissipated. 'This is what I'm hoping around the sexuality issue too – modelling that we can vehemently disagree about something, but we can still love one another in Christ and recognise one another as children of God.' Vann will be enthroned in red and gold at her home cathedral in Newport this autumn in what many in the church hope will mark a definitive end to a tumultuous period. Andy John, the former archbishop, announced in June he was standing down with immediate effect after an alcohol-fuelled financial, bullying and sexual misconduct scandal at Bangor Cathedral. John was not accused of wrongdoing, but calls for his resignation gathered pace after summaries of two reports were published and six 'serious incident reports' were sent to the Charity Commission earlier this year. Two members of the cathedral's college of priests have called for an independent inquiry into the events at Bangor, but Vann downplayed the demands, telling the Guardian that she believed the Wales-wide 'cultural audit' announced by the church's representative body in the wake of John's resignation would be sufficient to 'hold people accountable'. The new archbishop's top priority is 'healing and reconciliation', she said. 'There's a lot of work already going on in the background, we haven't been standing still … We must work to build trust with those who have been hurt and angered by what has gone on.' Vann is also somewhat of an outsider to Wales, symbolising a clean break with the John era and the Bangor scandal. The archbishop grew up in a religious family in Whetstone in Leicestershire, following in her church organist father's footsteps by studying at the Royal College of Music and then the Royal Schools of Music, where she trained as a teacher. She entered an Anglican theological college in 1986 to prepare for ordination and then worked in the Manchester diocese, becoming a priest in 1994 and archdeacon of Rochdale in 2008. Gender and sexuality are still highly divisive issues in the Anglican communion. Even in her new role as the first female and first openly gay archbishop in the UK, Vann was cautious on the topic of gay marriage. 'I don't personally feel the need to get married in church; Wendy and I have been together for 30 years, we've made our vows, and we are committed to each other. 'Gay marriage in church is inevitable, I think: the question is when. There are people who are very opposed, and as leader, I have to honour their position, which is theologically grounded. It isn't my job to push something through that would alienate a good proportion of clergy.' Vann's appointment has caused outrage in some circles, with one prominent conservative group calling it 'tragic'. In response, the Church in Wales has highlighted the warm welcome her appointment has received from dozens of other denominations and churches. For her part, Vann said she was not worried about whether her election would be perceived as tokenistic. 'It's a two-thirds majority vote in the electoral college, the bar is high,' she said. 'I don't think any of those people voted for me primarily because I'm a woman or I'm a gay person. They voted for me because they recognise I've got the skills to lead the Church in Wales at this particular time.'

Public urged to look out for exotic Jersey Tiger moths in parks and gardens
The public is being encouraged to look out for the exotic-looking species of Jersey Tiger moths that have been surging in numbers. Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation said the day-flying moths appear to be doing well as people record butterflies they see for its annual butterfly count. The initiative, which takes place over three weeks in summer and is currently under way until August 10, gets members of the public to spend 15 minutes recording those they see in their garden, parks or countryside. This year, the charity is urging people to take part in what it describes it as a 'nationwide rescue mission' for the UK's ailing butterfly species. As the count reached its mid-way point, Butterfly Conservation said people have recorded seeing 5,300 Jersey Tiger moths, compared with a total of 3,496 for the whole of last summer's count. This marks a 78% rise from 2024 when measured as an average per county, with the increase attributed to the warm, dry conditions, which likely helped the species spread their wings in abundance and settle in parts of the UK they usually would not. The moths are recognisable by their black and white tiger stripe forewings and vibrant red-orange or yellow hindwings adorned with bold black spots. Butterfly Conservation said the Jersey Tiger was largely restricted to the Channel Islands, the south coast of England, London and south-east Wales just a decade ago. But now they are frequently spotted across southern England and are continuing to spread through East Anglia and into the Midlands, with the charity saying they have been photographed this year in Cardiff, Birmingham, Cambridgeshire and Essex. It comes in the wake of last year's record low numbers which were partly down to the wet spring and cool summer but conservationists warned they come on top of long-term declines in the UK. More than 80% of butterfly species have declined since the 1970s, with experts warning they have been hit by damage to their habitats, climate change and the use of pesticides. Butterfly Conservation said that while the looks of Jersey Tiger moths have caught the public's attention this year, sightings in unexpected places also tell an important story about climate change. Dr Richard Fox, the charity's head of science, said: 'Butterfly and moth numbers fluctuate naturally each year depending on the weather, and this summer's warm, sunny conditions have created a much more favourable environment than last year's cool, wet season, which saw numbers recorded during Big Butterfly Count plunge to record lows. 'It's certainly uplifting to see more butterflies and moths this summer, but one good year can't undo the long-term decline many species are facing.' Dr Fox said populations peaks during good years have grown smaller over the past five years, while bad years have seen low numbers dip further. He added that the increase in Jersey Tiger moth sightings is an example of how climate change 'is reshaping the distribution of wildlife'. 'While it's a delight to spot such a vibrant moth in gardens, parks and green spaces, it's also a reminder of how rising temperatures are altering our natural environment,' he said. 'This is why the Big Butterfly Count matters. The more people who take part, the more we can learn about how species are adapting, or struggling, in the face of climate change and extreme weather.' Data collected by members of the public during the Big Butterfly Count directly informs national conservation strategies, helping protect not just butterflies and moths, but the wider ecosystems they support.
