Michigan, Matt Weiss sued again by 2 more former athletes alleging account hack

New York Times27-03-2025
Two more former University of Michigan female athletes have filed a class-action lawsuit against the university, its board of regents and former offensive coordinator Matt Weiss after Weiss was indicted on complaints of accessing intimate photos of thousands of students.
The federal suit was filed Wednesday on behalf of two unnamed athletes — a volleyball player and a soccer player. Both played from 2020 to 2024. The 42-page suit also names a third-party vendor, Keffer Development Services, as a defendant.

The suit echoes allegations made in a separate class-action lawsuit filed last week by two other former Wolverines athletes, a soccer player and a gymnast. That complaint was filed Friday, a day after a 24-count indictment was announced against Weiss. He's accused of using students' information to hack into email, social media and cloud storage accounts, giving him access to private information, including intimate photos and videos, as well as medical data.
The latest complaint said that Weiss 'primarily targeted female college athletes, so he posed a greater threat' to the unnamed plaintiffs, who were both 'prominent female student-athletes' for the Wolverines.
'The information that Weiss acquired due to the Non-Individual Defendants' negligence is highly confidential, personal, and distressing when exposed without authorization, causing humiliation and embarrassment,' the suit said.
Damages are expected to top $5 million, according to the complaint, and affect more than 100 other potential plaintiffs.
Weiss was fired in January 2023 after a report of suspicious computer activity at Schembechler Hall, Michigan's football facility. Authorities obtained warrants to search Weiss' residence in Ann Arbor and seized multiple devices as part of a two-year investigation that produced last week's federal indictment.
Weiss was hired in 2021 as Michigan's quarterbacks coach after 11 years with the Baltimore Ravens and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator the following season. Michigan won the Big Ten and appeared in the College Football Playoff in both seasons. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.

Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches

Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. OSU begins the defense of its national championship on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Texas in the 'Shoe. MSU basketball listed among top teams in Big Ten in latest preseason rankings

Today's edition of the ROTHSTEIN 45 is now LIVE following recent 10:1. Purdue2. Houston3. St. John's4. Florida5. Michigan6. UConn7. UCLA8. BYU9. Duke10. Texas TechCC: @FDSportsBook, @ Michigan State basketball remains just outside of the top 20 in the latest preseason rankings from one of the game's top analysts. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. Paul Finebaum criticizes Ohio State ranking in preseason poll

During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" Tuesday morning, college football analyst Paul Finebaum shared his biggest takeaway from the season's first AP Top 25 poll. His opinion was clear. Alabama is being underrated, and Ohio State is getting far too much credit. 'Don't be too shocked by this, Greeny, but Ohio State is too high. And, Heather, calm down, Alabama is too low,' Finebaum said. Ranked No. 8, Alabama sits lower than many expected, a placement Finebaum finds puzzling. He believes the Crimson Tide are legitimate College Football Playoff national championship contenders, especially following the announcement that Ty Simpson will be the starting quarterback this season. Simpson, now in his fourth year with the program, has served as the backup the past two seasons but has yet to start a game. That will change this fall. 'I really think Alabama is a serious national championship contender,' Finebaum emphasized. In contrast, Finebaum believes Ohio State, ranked No. 3, is being overhyped. He argued the Buckeyes are benefiting too much from last season's national championship and not being judged based on the current roster. 'I don't get Ohio State at all, Greeny. I know they won the national championship last year, but that has nothing to do with it,' Finebaum said. 'They don't have the same team, and that national championship hangover is going to catch up with them.' Finebaum went a step further and predicted that Ohio State's high ranking would be short-lived. He expects an early-season loss to top-ranked Texas. 'We'll see that in about two and a half weeks when Texas goes up there and walks out of that stadium a winner,' he added. ESPN's Heather Dinich agreed with Finebaum's assessment. 'He's right that Ohio State has a lot of questions and they're too high,' Dinich said. With the college football season just around the corner, Finebaum believes the AP Poll is already missing the mark on two of the sport's biggest programs.
