'We don't need this' - return of HMO plan neighbours just don't want

Residents are 'concerned' over a plan to convert a two-bed bungalow into a HMO for seven people.
Another planning application has been submitted for the property on Church Road in Perry Barr after a previous bid for a nine-bedroom HMO was given the boot last October.
Reasons for the rejection included the "loss of a family dwelling without sufficient justification" and an "increase in noise and disturbance."

This time, the HMO, which is close to the A34 Walsall Road, would be "tailored for young professionals" and come with four parking spaces.
Each bedroom would come with an en-suite and there would be a communal living/dining/kitchen area which opens up into a garden.

Coun Jon Hunt is opposing the latest plan, saying there is a desperate need for family homes in the area.
He said: "The residents of Church Road are very concerned at attempts to convert the houses into HMOs with large numbers of flats.
"Last time they signed a petition and the proposal was rejected by the planning department.
"These houses need to be kept as family homes, which are desperately needed.
"There are many flats available elsewhere in Perry Barr. We don't need this."
A design and access statement on behalf of the applicant said: "The proposal respects and responds to the existing site context and the character of the surrounding area.
"It carefully considers the local planning policies, including the '3Bs'Neighbourhood Plan, which promotes a garden suburb ethos.
"By incorporating significant landscaping, ample parking, secure bicycle storage, and enhanced pedestrian access, the development aims to meet the current and future needs of its residents while integrating seamlessly into the community."
It added: "In conclusion, the proposed development is a considered and respectful solution that utilises the potential of the existing site to meet the accommodation needs of the local area, contributing to the community's diversity and vibrancy."
The application will be discussed by city planners at a later date.

Patriotism ‘always important' to Starmer, says No 10 amid flag row

Patriotism 'will always be an important thing' to Sir Keir Starmer, Downing Street has said, after St George's Cross flags were removed from council properties by two local authorities. Flags have been taken down in Tower Hamlets in east London as well as Birmingham. On Monday, St George's cross flags were pictured on the A1206 on the Isle of Dogs in the east of the capital, after campaigners attached them following an online movement called 'Operation Raise the Colours'. BirminghamLive also reported flags that have been flown in areas of the city have been removed by the local council. Asked what the Prime Minister's view is on the councils that have removed the flags, Sir Keir's official spokesman said on Monday: 'I think the PM has always talked about his pride of being British, the patriotism he feels. 'I think he's talked about that previously […] not least recently in relation to the Lionesses' successful campaign in the Euros. 'Patriotism will always be an important thing to him.' Asked if Sir Keir is supportive of people who put up English flags, the spokesman said: 'Absolutely, patriotism, putting up English flags. 'We put up English flags all around Downing Street every time the English football team – women's and men's – are out trying to win games for us.' Residents saw Manchester Road in Tower Hamlets, east London, lined with St George's flags over the weekend but only a few remained by Monday. Walking along the busy inner city street on Monday lunchtime, one local resident who did not want to give his name said: 'They were all along the street, lots of them. It looked nice really. It was very colourful. 'I saw them late on Saturday. They just appeared and only noticed they have all gone now.' His neighbour said: 'They all went up at the weekend and have come down now.' She added that she did not feel threatened or scared, but it was definitely a 'very pointed act'. The local resident, who did not want to be named, said: 'It was right they should come down as I think it was after the demonstration about asylum.' She said 'it was not about community', adding that normally when you see flags go up it is around a celebration or about bringing people together. 'There was no noise or trouble about it. They just went up and I did not see anyone take them down.' She added: 'It was OK. I know a lot of people like it and it was bright.' Another resident said: 'It was all along the road. It was nice. There was nothing wrong with it. 'It went all along to the Britannia Hotel.' He added it was 'good to see' because 'so much today is about division and I am just proud of being English'. The Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf has been at the centre of protests over asylum seekers in recent weeks. Tower Hamlets Council said it has a 'policy setting out which flags are flown from council buildings and on which occasions'. In a statement, the council added: 'We are aware members of the public have been putting up St George flags on various structures. 'While we recognise people wish to express their views, we have a responsibility to monitor and maintain council infrastructure. 'Where flags are attached to council-owned infrastructure without permission, they may be removed as part of routine maintenance.' Birmingham City Council has been contacted for comment.

'Deep reservations' over leafy Midlands village housing plans as 'besieged' residents speak out

A West Midlands MP has expressed "deep reservations" over proposed developments around Hockley Heath in Solihull. There are a number of ongoing development proposals surrounding the leafy West Midlands village - with some submitted to the council and others under consultation ahead of being proposed. Meriden and Solihull East MP Saqib Bhatti spoke of his "deep reservations" around the proposed developments, which could bring a significant number of extra homes to the "tranquil" village. READ MORE: Residents of 'tranquil' West Midlands village feel 'besieged' at housing plans READ MORE: HMO extension appeal thrown out by inspectors Some plans are yet to be submitted to the council as they are undergoing public consultation through developers, but if later approved, would bring hundreds of new homes to Hockley Heath. In addition to plans to be submitted to Solihull Council, there are proposals from the south Warwickshire side of Hockley Heath that are also worrying villagers. Hockley Heath villager Peter Sylvester told BirminghamLive: "Hockley Heath forms part of the green belt between the Dorridge/Knowle conurbation and Solihull and if the developments that we are seeing proposed at the moment, that will convert us from a green belt location to a town in its own right, which means we will lose the complete split between the green belt and the buildings." The 73-year-old added: "We are not against new houses. "We don't want to be NIMBYS we have to be realistic but we have to say crikey, how are we going to do this? "We appreciate that we have to play our part but this is overwhelming. "You feel as if you are being besieged from north and south." Peter helped set up Hockley Heath Action Group at the start of July and it now has some 185 members. Saqib Bhatti, Member of Parliament for Meriden and Solihull East, also met with residents of Hockley Heath, attending a meeting with Hockley Heath Action Group on Thursday July 17. Responding to concerns, Mr Bhatti said: 'I was pleased to meet with residents at a meeting hosted by Hockley Heath Parish Council, to express my deep reservations about the proposed developments around Hockley Heath. "This follows a meeting I attended in February, earlier this year. 'My constituents in Hockley Heath and I are in lockstep in our belief that these planning proposals could have a significant impact on the local greenbelt. "We also agree that the Government's National Planning Policy Framework is gravely unfair – putting enormous pressures on rural communities whilst leaving urban areas like Birmingham criminally undeveloped. 'I will continue to work tirelessly with my constituents to protect our precious greenbelt, preserve our natural environment and ensure that the people of Hockley Heath are treated fairly and with consideration.' A Solihull Council spokesperson told BirminghamLive: "We are aware that these sites, along with many others, have been submitted via our Call for Sites exercise over the winter. "The Council will be reviewing all sites to determine which may be appropriate to be included in the draft Local Plan. 'The Call for Sites is a land availability exercise, and it does not necessarily mean that sites are suitable for development. 'The council is also aware of the proposals within the South Warwickshire plan and will continue to engage with the neighbouring authorities as these plans evolve.' Sally Nugent forced to halt BBC show live to deliver 'breaking news'

BBC Breakfast was halted live on air as Sally Nugent issued a breaking news update to viewers. It came following a fatal shooting of democratic state politician Melissa Hortman and her husband in Minnesota over the weekend. Sally shared with viewers that a man had been arrested following the incident. Vance Luther Boelter, aged 57, was captured on Sunday (June 15) night after an extensive two-day search operation for the killings that occurred the day before, YorkshireLive reports. READ MORE: Drug dealer who hid cocaine in Vaseline tubs jailed Speaking on the show, Sally said: "Police in the US state of Minnesota have arrested a man suspected of killing a democratic politician and her husband." Viewers were then shown an image of the man alongside a breaking news banner. Sally continued: "Officers released this photograph of the suspect, who was captured in what the Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described as a complex and dangerous manhunt. "Melissa Hortman and her partner were shot on Saturday after the attacker posed as a police officer." It has also been reported that the apprehended individual is accused of shooting and injuring another democratic legislator, state Senator John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their residence nearby. Following the arrest news, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey took to Facebook, commending the exceptional "skill and bravery" displayed by multiple law enforcement agencies in catching the suspect. "I'm grateful that our law enforcement partners in Minnesota acted with urgency to arrest the shooter and bring him to justice," he wrote. "Political violence is abhorrent, it cuts against the most basic moral fabric of our democracy. It's critical that those who commit these acts be held accountable under the law. I'm glad that will happen here." You can get all your favourite content from BirminghamLive on WhatsApp. Click here to sign up for breaking updates about the biggest stories in the region.
