(Deepak Gupta/HT Photo) Urging people to participate enthusiastically, Adityanath said, 'The Tiranga (tricolour) should be hoisted in every Indian home as a symbol of respect for the country.' After the launch, the streets of Lucknow resonated with patriotism as citizens marched holding the tricolour high. The chief minister himself marched alongside his cabinet colleagues and public representatives, leading the Tiranga Yatra through the streets of the state capital with the tricolour amid chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram'. Before flagging off the march from his residence, he interacted with and took selfies with schoolchildren, NCC cadets, scout guides and enthusiastic youth. Adityanath said Tiranga Yatra was not just a march but also an expression of gratitude to Bharat Mata, great leaders, revolutionaries and brave soldiers. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal, the August 13 to 15 campaign, along with Tiranga Yatras across villages, towns, and districts, aims to spread reverence for the Constitution, national symbols, freedom fighters, and great leaders during Amrit Kaal, the chief minister remarked in his address. 'From villages to towns and districts, Tiranga Yatras are setting an inspiring example. In Uttar Pradesh too, people are enthusiastically participating in Har Ghar Tiranga and selfie with Tiranga campaigns,' he stated. Highlighting India's global standing, he said, 'The world has witnessed India's courage, strength, and might during Operation Sindoor. This recognition also places a responsibility on every Indian to uphold the nation's honour.' He appealed to 140 crore citizens to rise above personal interests, dedicate themselves to the nation and actively participate in the grand celebration of independence. He cautioned against forces attempting to fracture social unity through divisions based on region, language, or caste, and urged that such elements must be exposed. Referring to the ambitious goal of 'Viksit Bharat – Atmanirbhar Bharat' by 2047 set by the Prime Minister, Yogi reaffirmed his commitment to making 'Viksit Uttar Pradesh – Atmanirbhar Uttar Pradesh' a guiding mantra for life. The event was attended by deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, ministers Swatantra Dev Singh and Kapildev Agarwal, MLAs Neeraj Bora, Jaya Devi, OP Srivastava, MLCs Mahendra Singh, Mukesh Sharma, Umesh Dwivedi, BJP Mahanagar president Anand Dwivedi and senior BJP leader Neeraj Singh, among others.

Fishermen protest demanding immediate release of arrested fishermen

Urging the Union and State governments to initiate steps to put an end to the frequent arrests of fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy, fishermen staged a protest at Thanganchimadam on Wednesday. Condemning the recent arrest of seven fishermen from Rameswaram, they raised slogans to put an end to the arrests and retrieve the traditional Katchatheevu fishing grounds. Karl Marx, a fishermen leader, said that they were fed up with pleading with the governments to find a solution to the ever-ending issue. 'Whenever the fishermen arrest happens we come to the street and protest. We are just given a namesake promise to withdraw the protest,' he added. Neither the arrested fishermen were released nor the Sri Lankan government have stopped arresting fishermen, he stated. 'As they have had enough, this time, to put an end to the situation permanently, in addition to the announcement of series of protests, have also restrained from entering the sea for fishing,' he noted. Also, they would go to any extent to pressurise the government to release the arrested fishermen, Mr. Karl Marx said. Jesu Raja, another fishermen leader, said that after the fishing ban period ended in June 15, in addition to the detaining seven mechanised boats and one country boat, more than 55 fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. More than 20 fishermen were already in the Sri Lankan prisons as convict prisoners. 'With the addition of 50 more to the prisons, their health conditions were badly affected due to the poor conditions in the prisons,' he added. While several of them were diagnosed with serious health conditions, the Indian government should step in immediately to put an end to the inhumane treatment and arrest of Indian fishermen, he stated.

Amid US tariff friction, India engages China and Russia in high-stakes diplomacy

NEW DELHI: As geopolitical tensions escalate over India's energy ties with Russia and new US tariffs on Indian goods, New Delhi is set to have high-level engagements with two of Washington's chief strategic rivals, China and Russia, within a single week. These parallel diplomatic efforts highlight India's need for a nuanced foreign policy calculus as it navigates a shifting global order. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is slated to visit India on August 18 for talks under the Special Representatives (SR) mechanism, a bilateral channel primarily aimed at managing and resolving the longstanding border dispute. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will represent India. While the mechanism has been dormant in recent years due to post-Galwan tensions, this meeting is being viewed as a signal of intent from both sides to re-engage cautiously, but constructively. Wang is set to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well. Relations between New Delhi and Beijing have been severely strained since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh. Wang Yi's visit may pave the way for a broader normalisation process and building of mutual trusts. More significantly, it sets the stage for a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin on August 31, Modi's first visit to China in seven years.
