Beyond My50: A call for bold digitalisation in Malaysia's public transportation — Tan Wei Siang

JULY 1 — The recent move to allow the purchase of the My50 unlimited travel pass through the Touch 'n Go eWallet app is a welcome development.
It offers added convenience, reduces queue times, and reflects growing awareness of the need to modernise Malaysia's public transportation system.
However, this should not be mistaken as a major breakthrough.
At best, it is a preliminary step—an overdue update that scratches only the surface of what true digitalisation could and should look like. If Malaysia is serious about transforming public transport into a world-class, efficient, and sustainable system, we must go far beyond app-based ticketing.
What we urgently need is a fully integrated, digitally powered public transportation ecosystem.
Malaysia still lacks a unified platform that allows commuters to seamlessly plan, pay, and track their journeys across different modes of transport—be it MRT, LRT, buses, KTM trains, or last-mile solutions like bicycles and e-scooters.
A centralised Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform should be introduced, bringing together real-time route planning, mobile payments, fare discounts, and service disruption notifications into one user-friendly interface.
Such systems are already operational in places like Helsinki and Singapore, where multimodal commuting is treated as a single, smooth experience rather than a fragmented patchwork.
Another area that demands urgent attention is route optimisation and service planning.
Currently, many of our bus and train schedules are based on outdated assumptions.
Artificial intelligence and data analytics should be deployed to analyse commuter behaviour, predict peak-hour congestion, and dynamically adjust schedules and fleet deployment.
Demand-responsive transit—where buses or vans are dispatched based on real-time passenger demand—can serve underserved suburbs and rural communities much more effectively than rigid, fixed routes.
The government and local councils must shift from static planning to smart, adaptive service design.
We must also look at how people access public transport.
If physical cards still need to be topped up at machines, or tokens need to be bought at counters, then we have not truly digitalised the user journey.
Malaysia should aim for a future where contactless, cardless, and queue-less travel is the norm.
This could mean using smartphones, QR codes, or even facial recognition for ticket validation—technologies already piloted in parts of China and Japan.
Subscription-based travel models that operate like Netflix, where users pay a monthly fee for unlimited or tiered access, should also be explored.
Digitalisation must also be inclusive.
Public transport apps and platforms should be built with the needs of all users in mind—not just the tech-savvy or urban elite. Accessibility features such as text-to-speech, screen reader support, large icons, and multilingual interfaces in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese, and Tamil must be standard, not optional.
Elderly users and those with disabilities should be able to use public transport apps with confidence, not confusion.
Another often-overlooked area is feedback and responsiveness.
Malaysians regularly endure broken escalators, overcrowded platforms, or late arrivals without any clear way to report issues.
Public transport apps should integrate crowdsourced feedback tools that allow commuters to report faults, rate service quality, and suggest improvements.
Transit agencies can then use this real-time data to maintain infrastructure, respond to service failures, and increase accountability. Digitalisation should also empower users to shape the system—not just use it.
Finally, digitalisation must be underpinned by transparent governance and open data.
Currently, much of Malaysia's transport data is locked within government agencies or private operators.
Opening up anonymised transit data through public APIs would allow startups, universities, and civic groups to innovate on top of it—building better journey planners, accessibility tools, and analytics dashboards.
A culture of open, collaborative innovation would help Malaysia move faster and smarter.
In short, while the My50 pass on TNG is a positive step, we must not stop here.
If we are serious about digital transformation in public transport, then the government must think bigger, move faster, and act bolder.
It is time to reimagine public transportation not just as a daily necessity, but as a digital public service that is efficient, inclusive, and future-ready.
Let us not settle for convenience when transformation is possible.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Bursa Malaysia reversed last Friday's losses to close higher on Monday, tracking gains in regional markets. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) climbed 1.44 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 1,537.51 from Friday's close of 1,536.07. The benchmark had opened 0.10 of a point lower at 1,535.97 and hovered between 1,533.93 and 1,538.33 throughout the session. The market breadth was negative, with 514 decliners outpacing 432 gainers and 510 counters unchanged, while 962 were untraded and nine suspended. Turnover declined to 2.93 billion shares worth RM1.67 billion, compared with 3.37 billion shares worth RM2.30 billion last Friday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the key index's positive performance was underpinned by stronger-than-expected trade data from China, with exports rising 5.8 per cent year-on-year in June, well above the 3.6 per cent forecast. 'The data suggested that Chinese exporters were accelerating shipments ahead of the expiry of the 90-day tariff reprieve, providing some relief to global market sentiment and partially offsetting lingering concerns over Washington's tariff rhetoric,' he told Bernama. Investors will also monitor more upcoming data from China, particularly June trade figures and the second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP). The Chinese government is due to release the economic data tomorrow. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the local market sentiment remains cautious amid ongoing concerns over US tariffs, with investors closely monitoring their implications for Asean economies and global supply chains. 'Nevertheless, the benchmark index is well supported above the 1,530 level. While commodity-related stocks saw some selling pressure, defensive and stable names in banking, consumer and utilities showed resilience,' he noted. Thong anticipates the FBM KLCI to trend within the range of 1,530-1,560 for the week. Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank gained three sen to RM9.72, while Public Bank and Tenaga Nasional rose two sen each to RM4.34 and RM13.98, respectively. CIMB and IHH Healthcare both edged up one sen to RM6.69 and RM6.59. In active trade, NexG gained two sen to 47 sen, Wentel Engineering grew 1.5 sen to 33.5 sen, Malaysian Resources Corporation added half-a-sen to 54 sen, Zetrix AI was 1.5 sen lower at 98.5 sen, and Tanco was flat at 90.5 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index gained 14.88 points to 11,558.46, the FBMT 100 Index expanded 12.30 points to 11,321.04, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index added 8.13 points to 11,560.60. The FBM 70 Index increased 25.85 points to 16,787.20, while the FBM ACE Index improved 33.35 points to 4,571.52. By sector, the Financial Services Index gained 55.74 points to 17,663.87, the Industrial Products and Services Index shaved 0.22 points to 153.87, and the Plantation Index fell 16.35 points to 7,434.10. The Energy Index inched up 9.76 points to 747.38. The Main Market volume retreated to 1.13 billion units worth RM1.35 billion from 1.36 billion units valued at RM1.99 billion last Friday. Warrant turnover slipped to 1.46 billion units valued at RM208.01 million from 1.70 billion units worth RM203 million previously. The ACE Market volume increased to 342.18 million units valued at RM113.55 million, versus 318.83 million units worth RM107.58 million on Friday. KUALA LUMPUR : The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended the week slightly lower today, as investors await fresh catalysts, mainly the ongoing trade negotiations between Malaysia and the US. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said the benchmark index touched an intraday high of 1,541.94 before retreating in the afternoon session, reflecting intermittent profit-taking and a lack of conviction amid external policy uncertainty. Despite the subdued tone, he noted that the underlying momentum remains intact, as valuations continue to look attractive relative to 2024 levels, particularly for long-term investors with a value bias. 'Telecommunications stocks led the gainers, buoyed by balance sheet improvements and investor optimism over earnings quality. 'Conversely, the utilities sector came under pressure, with investors locking in gains following a notable two-week rebound,' he told Bernama. On the regional front, Sedek said the market shows early signs of portfolio reallocation by US-based institutional investors. 'This trend, if sustained, could provide structural support for regional equities, Malaysia included, as tariff risk escalations and a pivot towards looser monetary conditions increase the relative appeal of Asia,' he said. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI eased 0.45 points or 0.03% to 1,536.07 from yesterday's close of 1,536.52. The benchmark index had opened 1.36 points higher at 1,537.88 and hovered between 1,530.77 and 1,541.94 throughout the session. However, the market breadth was positive, with 510 gainers outpacing 450 decliners. A total of 532 counters were unchanged, while 926 were untraded and 10 suspended. Turnover rose to 3.37 billion shares worth RM2.30 billion, compared with 3.25 billion shares worth RM2.45 billion yesterday. Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank lost four sen to RM9.69, but Public Bank gained two sen to RM4.32, Tenaga Nasional was flat at RM13.96, while CIMB slipped two sen to RM6.68, and IHH Healthcare was seven sen lower at RM6.58. In active trade, Zetrix AI and Dagang Nexchange garnered two sen each to RM1 and 32 sen, respectively. Tanco and NexG both improved 0.5 sen to 90.5 sen and 45 sen, respectively, while Sapura Energy reduced 0.5 sen to 3.5 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index gained 15.25 points to 11,543.58, the FBMT 100 Index expanded 15.61 points to 11,308.74, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index added 43.73 points to 11,552.47. The FBM 70 Index increased 105.75 points to 16,761.35, while the FBM ACE Index improved 21.60 points to 4,538.17. By sector, the financial services index fell 14.25 points to 17,608.13, the industrial products and services index inched up 0.55 points to 154.09, while the plantation index fell 10.81 points to 7,450.45. The energy index inched up 1.0 point to 737.62. The Main Market volume inched higher to 1.36 billion units worth RM1.99 billion from 1.32 billion units valued at RM2.17 billion yesterday. Warrants turnover rose to 1.7 billion units valued at RM2.03 million from 1.69 billion units worth RM190.86 million previously. The ACE Market volume rose to 318.83 million units valued at RM107.58 million, versus 241.47 million units worth RM86.17 million yesterday. Consumer products and services counters accounted for 161.98 million shares traded on the Main Market; industrial products and services (201.87 million), construction (109.35 million), technology (265.10 million), SPAC (nil), financial services (81.56 million), property (228.25 million), plantation (12.61 million), REITs (23.88 million), closed-end fund (15,500), energy (91.82 million), healthcare (55.13 million), telecommunications and media (49.04 million), transportation and logistics (33.85 million), utilities (43.83 million), and business trusts (132,600).

US economic data, trade uncertainty weigh on ringgit at close

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit ended the week lower against the US dollar today as stronger US economic data fuelled demand for the greenback. 'This came as lower-than-expected US initial jobless claims released overnight reinforced the narrative of a resilient American labour market and boosted US Treasury yields,' said SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes. Innes said the ringgit's recent depreciation was driven more by global macroeconomic forces, including robust US economic data and rising geopolitical uncertainties, rather than Malaysia's economic fundamentals. 'At this stage, the ringgit is no longer trading on local fundamentals. It is being swept along by the strong momentum of US macroeconomic indicators, dollar strength, and intensifying trade tensions. 'This renewed strength in the greenback is putting downward pressure on high-beta emerging market currencies, particularly those with close trade ties and higher sensitivity to global interest rates, such as the ringgit,' he told Bernama. Innes said the rising political risks are stemming from US trade rhetoric, particularly from President Donald Trump. 'Whether this is part of a broader strategic shift or merely pre-election posturing, the markets are taking notice. 'Even if viewed as a bluff by some, there is growing unease beneath the surface, especially given Malaysia's strong ties with China and BRICS nations – relationships that are increasingly at odds with Washington's current geopolitical stance,' he added. Innes reckons this layer of political uncertainty adds complexity to the ringgit's outlook, making it difficult for markets to price in or hedge against. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit eased today on renewed concerns over US tariffs. 'The market sentiment was dampened as Trump maintained a hawkish stance on trade, fuelling uncertainty over future tariff measures against several countries,' he added. He noted that the continued rhetoric has heightened investor caution, particularly in emerging markets, putting additional pressure on regional currencies, including the ringgit. At 6pm, the local note retreated to 4.2475/4.2525 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2410/4.2505. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It strengthened against the British pound to 5.7524/5.7592 from 5.7716/5.7845, rose versus the euro to 4.9679/4.9737 from 4.9751/4.9863, and improved against the Japanese yen to 2.8893/2.8929 from 2.9014/2.9081. The local note, however, trended lower against Asean currencies. It dropped against the Thai baht to 13.0668/13.0886 from 13.0196/13.0548 at yesterday's close, and was easier versus the Philippine peso at 7.52/7.53 from 7.51/7.53. The ringgit traded lower vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar at 3.3186/3.3228 from 3.3159/3.3236, and slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.8/262.3 from 261.3/262.1 previously.
