Baffled Google Maps users say phone is CRASHING after searching for common journey type
The popular app has more than a billion users worldwide - but some have been hit by a baffling device crash.

And strangely it only seems to affect those looking for public transport.
A number of commuters and people on trips over the summer holidays have complained about the issue.
The bug appears to only affect some Android smartphones.
Most reports have come from various Google Pixel owners, but Samsung, POCO and Redmagic users have come forward too.
The Sun tested Google Maps ' transit routes on a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and had no issues, suggesting the glitch isn't widespread.
"So today my Google Maps app on android suddenly decided to bug out in a really weird and specific way," one user wrote on Reddit.
"Whenever I try to search for transit directions for a place, it just crashes, every time.
"I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, logging in and out, and it still doesn't work.
"The weird thing is, whenever I'm searching for walking, biking or driving directions, it works just fine! It's just transit directions that causes it to crash."
Other travellers have come forward reporting the same problem.

"I'm visiting NYC and relied on this crappy app to get around," another person responded.
"Thank God I'm not the only person it's happening two what in the flip is going on," a third commenter said.
Others have informed Google that there's a snag in the app via their forum.
But the company hasn't responded to users as yet.
MAPS WORKAROUND
If you have been impacted by the Google Maps public transport route issue, there are some workarounds people have discovered.
It turns out, using the incognito mode in Google Maps avoids any crashing.
For those who don't know where to find it, simply tap your display image in the top right hand corner and you'll see Turn on incognito mode.
Another temporary solution is to use alternative apps like Citymapper instead.

Apple revenue forecast beats estimates, tariff costs projected at $1.1 billion
SAN FRANCISCO, July 31 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab forecast revenue for the current quarter ending in September well above Wall Street's estimates on Thursday, sending shares up despite a warning from CEO Tim Cook that U.S. tariffs would add $1.1 billion in costs over the period. As the centerpiece of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war, those tariffs cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter and spurred some customers to buy iPhones in late spring this year. Those purchases helped Apple's fiscal third-quarter sales beat expectations by the biggest percentage in at least four years, according to LSEG. The company still forecast growth, though, with Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh saying the company expects revenue growth for the current quarter in the "mid to high single digits," which would exceed the 3.27% growth to $98.04 billion that analysts expected, according to LSEG data. Apple reported $94.04 billion in revenue for its fiscal third quarter ended on June 28, up nearly 10% from a year earlier and beating analyst expectations of $89.54 billion, according to LSEG data. Its earnings per share of $1.57 topped expectations for $1.43 per share. Apple shares were up 3% in after-hours trading, extending gains after Apple provided its forecast. Sales of iPhones, the best-selling product for the company based in Cupertino, California, were up 13.5% to $44.58 billion, beating analyst expectations of $40.22 billion. Apple has been shifting production of products bound for the U.S., sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. The ultimate tariff rates many Apple products could face remain in flux, and many of its products are currently exempt. Sales in its Americas segment, which includes the U.S. and could face tariff impacts, rose 9.3% to $41.2 billion. In Greater China, where Apple has faced long delays in approval to introduce AI features on its devices, sales were $15.37 billion, up from a year ago and above expectations of $15.12 billion, according to a survey of five analysts from data firm Visible Alpha. That gain was a turnaround from a year-over-year decline in China sales in the March quarter. In a conference call with analysts, Cook said some of that was due to a subsidy program in China to help revive the smartphone market, which boosted some of Apple's products. "It was the first full quarter of the subsidy playing out," Cook told analysts. In an interview with Reuters, Cook said the company set seasonal records for upgrades of iPhones, Macs and Apple Watches. He said Apple estimates about 1 percentage point of its 9.6% of sales growth in the quarter was attributable to customers making purchases ahead of potential tariffs. "We saw evidence in the early part of the quarter, specifically, of some pull-ahead related to the tariff announcements," Cook told Reuters, though he also said the active user base for iPhones hit a record high in all geographies. The U.S. is still negotiating with both China and India, with Trump saying India could face 25% tariffs as early as Friday. However, analysts said India could still retain cost advantages for Apple in the longer term. "The pull-forward in demand due to tariffs was somewhat expected given the uncertainty around pricing. However, it's important to put this in context as this is typically a slow quarter for Apple, yet they still delivered exceptional results with iPhone growth," Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne said. Tariffs are only one of Apple's challenges. The company faces competition from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co ( opens new tab in a tough market for premium-priced mobile phones. On the software front, Apple faces challenges from Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, which is quickly weaving AI features into its competing Android operating system. "Apple has always been about taking the most advanced technologies and making them easy to use and accessible for everyone, and that's at the heart of our AI strategy," Cook said. Apple faces regulatory rulings in Europe that threaten to undermine its lucrative App Store business. Apple said sales from its services business, which includes the App Store as well as music and cloud storage, were $27.42 billion, topping analyst expectations of $26.8 billion. Sales of wearables such as AirPods and Apple Watches were $7.4 billion, missing estimates of $7.82 billion. Mac sales of $8.05 billion beat expectations of $7.26 billion, while iPads hit $6.58 billion in sales, missing expectations of $7.24 billion. Apple said gross margins were 46.5% in the fiscal third quarter, beating analyst expectations of 45.9%, according to LSEG estimates. New types of engineered wood are ready for building sites

The construction industry is increasingly pushing wood to new limits."You can almost massage the wood so you're squeezing air and imperfections out," explains Mr Lau as he describes the process of treating timber with chemicals to remove lignin, a polymer found in wood, and then compressing it extremely firmly to reduce its volume by around 80%.This has the effect of creating additional hydrogen bonds within the material, adds Mr Lau, significantly strengthening it even though it becomes much thinner than the original timber.A key advantage, InventWood says, is in retaining the wood's attractive grain in the finished product. InventWood has spent years refining its process – it used to take more than a week. Like an ultra-tough CLT instead of concrete to build a community centre could reduce carbon emissions associated with the construction and operation of the building by nearly 10%, a study published in June isn't designed to compete with these products, says Mr Lau. But it could provide a more aesthetically pleasing, and structurally sound, finishing layer to them, for example. Or, it could function as a durable external a "promising" technology, says Morwenna Spear, research fellow at Bangor University's BioComposites she points out that, in environments such as the UK, wood that is used externally on buildings must cope with weather that cycles from wet to dry extremely frequently. "I'd want to see some data coming from them about that," she says. Other companies are working on different engineered wood in Germany, for example, has BauBuche – a laminated veneer lumber, very thin layers of wood pressed and glued together – made using beech. That's interesting because beech is not generally considered the first choice for construction."By processing it into veneers, Pollmeier found a way to use it much more structurally," explains Michael Ramage, director of the Centre for Natural Material Innovation at the University of also 3RT in Australia, which uses thin veneer sheets of low-value trees or "pulp logs".It allows them to mimic the structure and density of much more valuable hardwood. "It just increases that palette of options to people." There are still barriers to wood in construction, though, says Prof Ramage: "Is the mortgage the same rate as a mortgage on a concrete building? Is the insurance the same price?"He advocates for the wider adoption of wood products chiefly because of their ability to store carbon over many years, though he notes that there are some jobs wood can't do. "We're always going to need concrete in the ground for foundations," he Lau points out that, after the devastating wildfires that hit Los Angeles in January, some people have questioned the wisdom of using wood as a building material. But he insists that Superwood has proved fire-resistant in the wood has also survived exposure to wood-eating insects, adds Mr Lau. While it is tougher to work with than natural timber, it can still be sawn in a traditional manner with carbide or diamond-tipped shouldn't forget the importance of recycling old timber amidst the rise of highly engineered wood products, though, says Dr Spear. Researchers in the UK have shown that waste wood from demolished buildings can be repurposed in CLT-style you probably already have a significant number of recycled wood products in your own home, demonstrating that novel ways of using wood really have become quite mainstream these days. "So much of our furniture is made… of particle board – a huge proportion of that comes from recycled timber," says Dr Spear.
