'He was my hope': Stepfather mourns teen killed in m-cycle crash before Aidiladha
KUALA MUDA: Abdul Hamid Hassan broke down in tears on the morning of Hari Raya Aidiladha today, overcome with grief as thoughts of his late stepson, Muhammad Fahmi Jamel, 19, flooded his mind.
The 54-year-old odd job worker said this year's celebration felt empty without Fahmi, who had shown much promise as a welding student at the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) Jitra branch.
"He was a good child.
"He never talked back, and I would never lay a hand on him.
"He was my hope, he was my 'orang kuat' (strong man)," he said, his voice breaking as he spoke at their home in Jeniang Town.
Fahmi was one of three 19-year-old students from IKBN Jitra who were killed in a road accident while riding home on two motorcycles to celebrate Aidiladha.
The other victims were Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri from Gurun and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani from Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani.
Another student, Muhammad Adib Aiman Mohamad Hasan, also 19, who was riding pillion, is currently receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.
Fahmi's mother, Siti Fatimah Mat Rejab, 45, said her son had been looking forward to wearing a new black outfit – a matching shirt and trousers – that he had ordered days earlier.
"It's difficult to accept, but I've come to terms with it.
"Alhamdulillah, he passed away peacefully, on a blessed day.
"He was excited to come home. The clothes arrived on Tuesday… he would have worn them today," she said, holding back tears.
She said Fahmi, who was well-loved by his peers, had planned to spend Hari Raya Aidiladha with his hometown friends.
"He had many friends.
"He planned to celebrate Raya with them and made a lot of memories with them.
"Whenever he was back home, you could always hear him playing the guitar and singing in his room.
"We still can't bring ourselves to enter that room," she added.
Fahmi was laid to rest at 1am today at a cemetery near their grandfather's home in Kampung Berona Kanan, Sik, next to his grandfather, Mat Rejab Awang Kecil.
A similarly sombre atmosphere lingered at the home of Habil in Kampung Lubuk Reba, Padang Lembu, Gurun.
His parents, Mohd Sobri Kamis, 47, and Sarah Abdul Rasid, 41, were still reeling from the loss.
"I told myself I have to accept this as fate – that my son is gone and this is Allah's will… but it's painful, as it came as a major shock to us because he was healthy this whole time," said Sarah, a Quran and Fardhu Ain (Kafa) teacher.
The family had planned a surprise balik kampung trip to Bagan Serai, Perak, for the holiday, which was cancelled following the tragedy.
"We didn't tell him because we knew he'd be overjoyed. We had everything ready and were just waiting for him to come home," said Sobri, who was holding a blue shirt meant for Habil – the family's Aidiladha theme colour.
In tears, Sobri said Habil had dreamed of working as a welder on offshore platforms and was seen as the family's hope for the future.
"We buried him in a nearby cemetery, and Alhamdulillah, the process went smoothly. Everything was completed by around 1am this morning," he said.

Losing five family members to horrific car crash
Cherished memories: Five members of the family were killed in the crash near Jerantut. — Bernama IPOH: For Muhammat Ridzuan Ishak, 33, the loss of his younger brother in a tragic accident in Jerantut, Pahang, is difficult to bear, especially since he gave much joy to his family with his antics and cheerfulness. He said that it was a harsh reality to accept when his brother Muhammad Ikmal Ishak, 26, was killed along with his wife, Nur Arfiqah Aziz Jaafar, 23, and three of his in-laws in a road accident at KM7, Jalan Jerantut-Maran, in Pahang. Earlier, Jerantut police chief Supt Zukri Muhammad confirmed that Muhammad Ikmal and his wife, Nur Arfiqah, from Ulu Kinta, Perak, together with Nur Arfiqah's three siblings – Mohammad Zulkifli, 21, Mohamad Azizul Hakimi, 19, and Nurul Hazwani, 17 – all from Bota, Perak, were killed in an accident involving another vehicle near Jerantut on Friday night. A nearby hospital treated the injured driver and two passengers from the other vehicle. 'The last time we met was on Wednesday at Taman Malar, Tambun, when the siblings gathered, and as usual, my brother was cheerful. We have seven siblings, and he was the sixth child. 'Before the incident, I saw a WhatsApp message around 10pm where he complained that it was the first time he was using this road and that it would be the last time,' he said, Bernama reported. Recalling the incident, Muhammat Ridzuan said he received a phone call from Nur Arfiqah's brother informing him about the tragedy. 'I was stunned. But even though I was sad, I will accept this test from Allah,' added Muhammat Ridzuan. Meanwhile, the mother who lost four children in the road accident said she had asked them not to visit their uncle on that day. Zaini Noh, 52, who is the mother of Nur Arfiqah and her siblings, said her motherly instinct made her feel that something untoward was going to happen. Hence, she advised her four children and son-in-law to cancel their plans to spend Hari Raya Aidiladha at their uncle's house in Jerantut. 'I could not go because I was unwell. I told them not to go as my husband and I will not be going,' Sinar Harian quoted her as saying. 'I told them not to go several times, but they insisted on going,' she said at her residence at Kampung Padang Kunchor, Bota Kanan. Zaini added that her children had not visited their uncle for some time.

Mother mourns four children killed in Jerantut crash
PARIT: The mother of four siblings who were killed in an accident at Km7 of Jalan Jerantut–Maran in Jerantut, Pahang, today never imagined that her children's trip to celebrate Aidiladha at their uncle's house would end in tragedy. Zaini Noh's children, namely, Nur Arfiqah Aziz Jaafar, 23; Mohammad Zulkifli Aziz Jaafar, 21; Mohamad Azizul Hakimi Aziz Jaafar, 19; and Nurul Hazwani Aziz Jaafar, 17, along with Nur Arfiqah's husband, Mohamad Ikmal Ishak, 26, were all killed on the spot. The 52-year-old said she had initially advised her children and son-in-law not to make the journey to Jerantut, as she was unwell and unable to join them after suffering a mild stroke. However, she said Nur Arfiqah was determined to visit their uncle to attend a qurban (sacrificial livestock) feast in conjunction with Aidiladha, as the family had not visited his home in Jerantut since 2004. "They left for Pahang around 5pm yesterday to attend the qurban ceremony organised by my brother. This was their first visit after a very long time. "Since their uncle had invited them, they were eager to go... I did not accompany them because of my health. "I told Arfiqah that if I could not attend, they should postpone the trip, but she insisted, even though I repeatedly asked her not to go without me," Zaini told reporters when met at Kampung Padang Kunchor, Bota, today. Zaini said she has come to terms with the loss of her four children on the eve of Aidiladha, as she now has only her eldest son and youngest daughter left. She said she was first informed by a neighbour that her children were involved in an accident. It was only hours later that she received confirmation that they had died. "My youngest daughter had travelled earlier with other relatives to Jerantut on Thursday, while my eldest son, who is married, did not join the trip," she said. Zaini last saw her children on Tuesday, when Nur Arfiqah came to her house to pick up her younger siblings. The group gathered in Ipoh, Perak, before continuing their journey to Jerantut on Thursday and Friday. She said her son, Mohammad Zulkifli, had recently bought packed rice for his 10 housemates, a kind gesture that his friends shared with the family when they came to visit today. "His friends came by today and told me that he had bought them packed meals just days before the tragedy," she said. Funeral prayers for the siblings will be held at Jamek Bota Kanan Mosque before they are laid to rest at the Kampung Selat Muslim burial ground in Bota Kanan. In the early morning accident, three others, including a woman travelling in a Toyota Alphard, sustained injuries.
