White House discloses Trump's approach to Putin summit

Russia Today4 days ago
US President Donald Trump believes that diplomacy is the best way to end the Ukraine conflict, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has told Fox News ahead of the American leader's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
Washington has a wide range of 'tools' at its disposal that it can use if necessary but would still very much prefer to try out a diplomatic approach first, according to Leavitt.
Washington and Moscow have both tempered expectations for the summit, signaling the meeting will likely end up being just the first in a string of top-level talks rather than yield an immediate breakthrough.
Trump earlier described the summit with Putin as a 'feel-out meeting' that will help him determine whether the Ukraine conflict can be resolved.
'The president wants to exhaust all options to try to bring this war to a peaceful resolution,' Leavitt said Thursday. 'He has always said that diplomacy and negotiation is his primary way of hoping to end this war. That's what he will be looking to do tomorrow.'
The American leader is reluctant to resort to more forceful measures in its dealings with Moscow, Leavitt said, adding that, although sanctions and 'many other measures' are on the table, that does not mean that Trump 'is willing' to use them.
The spokeswoman also confirmed that the summit will feature a one-on-one meeting between Trump and Putin followed by a lunch with the respective delegations and a joint press conference of the two leaders.
Such a schedule was earlier confirmed by the Kremlin. The Russian delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, according to Ushakov himself.
Washington is yet to officially announce who will be accompanying Trump to Alaska.
The Russian delegation is expected to return home immediately after the negotiations conclude.

Starmer instructed Zelensky how to behave around Trump

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer advised Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on how to avoid another confrontation at the White House, NBC News reported on Monday. Zelensky is in Washington for negotiations with US President Donald Trump and Kiev's key European backers. His previous visit in February was cut short after a heated exchange with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance in the Oval Office. According to NBC, Starmer was a key figure among European officials who 'coached' Zelensky on how to interact with Trump. The Ukrainian leader was reportedly advised to thank Trump for military aid and diplomatic support and to wear a suit jacket instead of his usual military-style attire. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

NATO deployment in Ukraine ‘unacceptable'

The presence of NATO troops in Ukraine, regardless of the pretext or scenario, would be absolutely unacceptable to Russia, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has stated. She accused London of attempting to undermine the ongoing diplomatic process toward a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict by Moscow and Washington. Commenting on British officials' remarks about a hypothetical military mission on Monday, Zakharova claimed that 'London is hell-bent on constantly upping the ante in the conflict and pushing its NATO partners to a dangerous line, beyond which a new global conflict lies.' 'We reiterate the position that we have voiced on multiple occasions that we categorically reject any scenarios, envisaging the arrival of a military contingent in Ukraine, involving NATO states,' the spokeswoman clarified. Sergey Shoigu, secretary of Russia's National Security Council and former defense minister, earlier warned that the arrival of NATO troops in Ukraine could trigger a third world war. In March, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron announced the establishment of a 'coalition of the willing' to provide ground and air forces to monitor a potential truce or a peace deal, should Kiev and Moscow reach one. Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, Romania and Croatia have all refused to commit their military personnel. Earlier this month, The Sunday Times quoted an anonymous UK defense official as saying that 'no one wants to send their troops to die in Ukraine.'
