Microsoft has reportedly cancelled Rare's upcoming Everwild amid job cuts
This new round of layoffs follows a previous round in May. Roughly 6,000 people were let go, with most of the job losses landing in product and engineering departments. Microsoft Gaming Chief Executive Officer Phil Spencer sent an email to staff (as transcribed by Bloomberg): 'To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness.'

Spencer said that affected employees who apply for other positions within the company will be given priority review. This is the fourth wave of layoffs at Xbox within the last 18 months. The company has laid off more than 10,000 people since 2023. Nearly 2,000 people were affected in February 2024, with another 650 cuts in September 2024.

Everwild was described as 'a brand new IP from Rare,' and many fans waited eagerly for its release since its announcement in 2019. However, little information has emerged since that time, with a report in 2021 announcing that development had restarted. In February 2025, Phil Spencer confirmed Everwild was still in development.
Everwild has been in development for more than a decade. The reasons for its cancellation are unclear, but the mysterious game has had a troubled development cycle with little to show for it in all this time.

Orpington student wins engineering category in Big Bang competition
A South East London student has won the intermediate engineering category in a nationwide competition. Om Kuravinakop, a year 11 student at St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School in Orpington, was a winner at the Big Bang Competition. This competition recognises young engineers, scientists, and technologists from across the UK. Om created a portable air quality monitor for people with asthma. This device tracks elements such as fine particulate matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and humidity. It syncs to a smartphone to help asthma sufferers assess potential risks, aiming to avert attacks. Muhammad Shah, a year 13 student at Queen Elizabeth's School in Barnet, was crowned UK Young Technologist of the Year 2025 for his creation, Icarus, an alternative telecommunications system designed for low-cost emergency communications in remote areas. Inspired by his experiences in Kashmir, Muhammad's project was motivated by a desire to prevent trekking-related accidents. Muhammad said: "I'm delighted to have won this award, it means a lot. "Coming from Kashmir, I really wanted to give something back to my community. "I remember hearing news about different accidents of people trekking. "I wanted to find a solution to help find ways to prevent those disasters from happening." His absence from the official awards ceremony due to A-Level exams led to a special presentation at his school's design showcase on Thursday, June 26. Another student from Queen Elizabeth's School, Snehal Das, was recognised with the UCL Engineering Inclusive Design for a Fairer World Award for his Addition Toy. The toy, created as part of his D&T GCSE project, helps children with learning difficulties and autism visually learn addition. The Intellectual Property Office Innovation Award went to Aina Dyandra from Park View School, Haringey, for their Aerate project. The Big Bang Competition also named several runners-up from London-based schools. Black Sabbath live stream begins online but fans 'heartbroken' by number of problems
A 'live stream' of Black Sabbath's Back to the Beginning concert in Villa Park today has started - but fans have been left upset by a number of issues. Tickets to the Black Sabbath concert sold out in minutes - but fans not able to go to Villa Park today were given the chance to catch up with all the excitement online via a stream of the show. The gig itself started at 1pm today, and the stream began at 3pm - with organisers saying it gave fans 'around the world' the chance to watch. One said: "I'm like a child waiting for Santa Claus" while another said "Long live the Prince of Darkness". There were 'hello' messages from Finland, Scotland, Portugal, Italy, Vietnam and more. And while many viewers were excited when the stream began, dozens of messages popped up from unhappy fans who said the stream was 'glitching' or 'not working'. A lot of people were upset they could not cast it to their TV either. One said: "The video was glitchy for me but refreshing the link fixed it." Another said: "If I can't cast it to my TV, I want a refund. I am heartbroken. And someone said: "I wonder how hard it will be to get a refund for this dreadful streaming". One fan added: "Where is the video stream? I only have sound." But many fans expressed their joy at watching online saying: "yeahhh man" and "Birmingham forever!" One said: "The stream is actually awesome. Anyone having problems check your browser/internet connections etc". There are also adverts in the live stream, but these are for the three chosen charities proceeds from the gig are going towards - Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Acorns Children's Hospice.
