Lower pass percentage brings down Common Entrance Test eligibility in Karnataka
This year, 2,62,195 students are eligible for engineering courses, compared to over 2.7 lakh last year. Similarly, a little under 2 lakh students are eligible for BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences), as against almost 2.2 lakh last year. In BSc (Agri), the number is down more than 20,000 to 1.9 lakh.
"The reduction is because the number of students who passed II PU was less than last year. There was a difference of 9,000," said the minister.
In exam 1, in 2024, 2,46,744 students passed in science. This year, the number was 2,31,461.
Seat blocking
Reacting to the seat-blocking scam of CET 2024, Sudhakar said he is yet to go through the chargesheet. "We need to go through the details of the chargesheet. In case we don't find it satisfactory, we will take legal opinion on what can be done next," he said.
TOI had reported that the chargesheet filed by Malleswaram police states the brokers said colleges weren't involved.
The chargesheet states that even though option entries were made, no students were admitted to these seats. While the accused used the credentials of students who excelled in other exams, they said the students were also unaware of the scam.
Janivara controversy
The student who didn't write the maths paper of CET because he wasn't permitted to wear the sacred thread (Janivara) received a rank of 2.06 lakh. He secured around 57% marks in the II PU exam.
He was given the option of writing the paper again or taking the average of marks of his other papers, and he chose the latter.
Spot ranks for those who didn't enter marks
Candidates whose CET 2025 results haven't been announced because of errors in entering their registration number, will be given an opportunity to upload their marks online starting Monday.
Several candidates have submitted representations stating that even though they passed II PUC / class 12 exams, their CET results weren't published.
"It was earlier announced that the II PUC / class 12 marks would be obtained directly from the respective education boards before announcing the CET 2025 results, and candidates were required to enter the correct registration number. However, some failed to enter the correct number, because of which their results couldn't be processed," Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) said in a press release.
From May 26, an online link will be activated for such candidates to submit their II PU / class 12 marks along with the correct registration number and mark sheet. Once KEA verifies and confirms these marks with the respective boards, the candidates will be issued spot ranks starting May 29.

The number of helplines in KEA was increased from five to 10 last year. The call centres will work from 8am to 8pm.

For those offering online money games and banks engaged in transactions face violations of the proposed law will be "cognisable and non-bailable" offences. Every subsequent violation after conviction would attract penalties of at least three years' jail and fine of Rs 10-20 lakh. In the case of advertisers, such penalties would be 2-3 years in jail and fine of Rs 5-10 lakh. The bill proposes to hold senior executives of the companies liable, if it's established that the offences have been committed with the consent or connivance or due to their neglect. It also proposes blocking of platforms and money gaming services, if the entities or individuals fail to comply with the law. According to the proposal, the bill seeks to encourage Indian startups to build culturally relevant content, reduce dependence on foreign platforms and promote self-reliance in the digital gaming ecosystem.

Karnataka child marriage figures show marginal dip in 2024-25
Mysuru: Incidents of child marriage continue to be high in Karnataka, with 700 cases reported in 2024-25. Though this shows a roughly 3% dip in cases compared to the previous fiscal, the overall numbers are still quite alarming. A district-wise breakup put Shivamogga, Belagavi, and Chitradurga in the top three, with Mysuru and Mandya in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Laxmi Hebbalkar, the women and child development minister, said in the assembly last week that in 2023-24, about 719 child marriages took place in the state. This year, between April and June 2025, the state reported 211 cases. The minister, in her reply to a query on the measures taken by the department to prevent child marriages, said senior police and district administrative officials have been instructed to take necessary action to prevent child marriages. The govt has initiated measures to run awareness drives on KSRTC and BMTC buses to prevent child marriages. As a deterrent to tackle the scourge, a draft amendment bill 2025 has been prepared, which has been approved by the cabinet. The bill seeks to criminalise even acts such as attempts, preparations, and engagements for child marriage. Presently, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, doesn't allow the police to register complaints on these grounds. President of the Child Welfare Committee, Mysuru, M Ravichandra, told TOI in all cases of child marriage, an FIR is registered against the parents and relatives. If a minor girl is physically abused, then the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act are invoked. Elopement is also a reason behind child marriages, with parents marrying off the minors fearing social stigma and ostracism, the president explained. Jasheela, a counsellor at Santwana Kendra at HD Kote in Mysuru, claimed cases of child marriage are high among economically weaker families. Two girls, both 17, who were believed to be in a relationship, were rescued recently before their families could marry them off, she said. Mandya DCPO S Rashmi claimed efforts are on to prevent child marriage at all levels. According to Rashmi, the efforts have already yielded favourable results, as the number of cases of child marriage have come down. 26% staff crunch affects Kendriya Vidyalayas in Karnataka
Hubballi: Karnataka has 53 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) run by the Union govt. According to an RTI reply, there is a 26% shortage of teachers at KVs in the Bengaluru region, which includes all districts of the state. Some schools are functioning without a full-fledged principal, and some are left understaffed. The parents who are mainly from union govt departments, including the defence and paramilitary personnel, the state govt, and civilians, are worried about the shortage. In an RTI reply, a copy of which is available with the TOI, Hema K, assistant commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Bengaluru Region, stated that there are 1,981 sanctioned posts, but 524 of them are vacant. Umapati Bandakeri, secretary of KV Alumni Association, Hubballi-Dharwad, told TOI that the shortage of teachers is hampering the academic curriculum of KVs across the state. "Though they appoint local teachers on a contract basis, they can't be engaged in departmental training and other activities like permanent teachers. He also noted that earlier, it was mandatory to have a substitute, like local contractual teachers, to relieve any transferred teacher. "Nowadays, this mandate is removed, and north Indian teachers are being relieved at any time from Karnataka or any other state without the arrangement of substitutes," he added. Prakash, who worked as a contractual teacher at a KV in Bengaluru, said that he was mercilessly terminated when a permanent teacher joined. "I suffered without a job for the remaining academic year, as I was terminated in the middle of the year. Since then, I have stopped joining KV," he added.
