Tunnels will reduce travel time, ensure all-weather connectivity: J&K LG
Jammu, June 23 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for giving approval to 19 mega road and tunnel projects worth 10, 637 crore with length of 296 kms for the Union Territory.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the Action plan of 2025-26 in respect of National Highways of J&K and sanctioned major projects include construction of Peer-Ki-Gali tunnel on NH-701A (Rs 3830 Cr), Sadhana tunnel on NH-701 (Rs 3330 Cr) and Zaznar Shopian section of NH-701A (Rs 852 Cr).
Besides, the ministry has sanctoned a four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora (Rs 700 Cr), Construction of Trehgam Chamkote section of NH-701 (Rs 966 Cr), a 4-Lane Magam Flyover on Narbal-Gulmarg section of NH 701-A (Rs 445 Cr), Construction of Qazigund Bypass (Rs 95 Cr), Construction of 2-L bridge over Rambiara at Shopian on NH-444 (Rs 71 Cr) and various other, including road safety projects.
'Many strategically important projects will improve logistical support and troops mobility. Projects will improve Infrastructure in the Union Territory and connect various tourist destinations. Construction of tunnels will reduce the travel time, ensure all-weather connectivity and spur economic growth,' the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Ministry has also sanctioned preparation of DPR/Feasibility Study for various NH works to be up in next 3 years.
These include widening and upgradation of NH-444 from Srinagar to Qazigund (63 kms), construction of 2L+PS road from Shopian to Magam on NH-701A (75 kms), construction of 10.80 Km long Panjtarni tunnel including approach (31 kms), development of Domail-Katra-Bamla of NH-144 to 4 Lane specifications (82 kms). No fund crunch but bureaucratic delay, says Union Minister Gadkari on execution of big projects
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said there is no dearth of funds for projects but expressed concern over the bureaucracy's lack of flexibility and "complete no to out-of-the-box ideas" to execute big projects. "There is no death of funds with us. I always talk of ₹1 lakh crore, ₹50,000 crore, ₹2 lakh crore projects. Generally journalists do not trust politicians when it comes to big ticket announcements. I tell them to record what I say and run breaking news if the work does not get materialised," he said. Mr. Gadkari also said the concern was about slow pace of work rather than availability of funds. "In rural areas, when cattle go for grazing, they follow one line. They are so disciplined that they never break the order. I sometimes get the same feeling with the bureaucracy. It is a complete no to out-of-the-box ideas. But Kelkar sir accepted flexibility in policy-making," Mr. Gadkari said. Mr. Gadkari said he had met Mr. Kelkar when the latter was chairman of the finance commission and told him that 406 projects costing ₹3.85 lakh crore were stalled, and there was a danger of banks ending up with non-performing assets of ₹3 lakh crore. "He asked me what was the reason. I told him the only reason is bureaucrats. We solved the issue by terminating some projects and rectifying some. The projects resumed and banks were saved from having NPAs of ₹3 lakh crore," he said. "Kelkar did excellent work in every department but the policies he drafted as finance secretary had a long term effect on India's future," the Union minister said. In 2009, when (former President of India) Pranab Mukherjee was the Union finance minister, Kelkar was trying to create a consensus on GST while facing several challenges but he insisted it had to be done as it was in the interest of the country, Union Minister Gadkari recounted. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kelkar said politicians are the one who promote social and economic reforms. "I feel they are the real policy entrepreneurs as they are the decision makers," he added.

"Congress's only job is to spread lies," Annapurna Devi slams Jairam Ramesh over technology remarks
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Union Minister Annapurna Devi hit back at Congress MP Jairam Ramesh for claiming that the Modi government is using technology to keep poor people away from welfare schemes. She said the government uses tools like Aadhaar, biometrics, and face recognition to ensure help reaches the right people quickly and without corruption. However, Jairam Ramesh claimed that these technologies are making it harder for pregnant women, tribals, and workers to get the benefits they deserve. In a post on X on Monday, Annapurna Devi wrote, 'The Modi government is ensuring transparency and inclusion in welfare schemes through technology. Congress's only job is to spread lies and misconceptions, and to hinder the effective implementation of our government's schemes. With the help of modern technologies like Facial Recognition System (FRS), Biometric and Aadhaar, the government today is successful in reaching the last line beneficiary.' Devi dismissed claims that technology is reducing access to welfare schemes, stating that the number of first-time beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) has actually increased, from 72.05 lakh in 2019-20 to a record 80.48 lakh in 2024-25, with over 27 lakh already registered in the first quarter of 2025-26. 'It is totally wrong to say that the use of technology has led to a decline in PMMVY beneficiaries. First-time beneficiaries in 2019-20: 72.05 lakh, increase to: 80.48 lakh in 2024-25 (highest ever number) and in the first quarter of 2025-26 itself: 27 lakh+ beneficiaries,' the post reads. She said over 10 crore farmers receive monthly DBT under PM-Kisan, and more than 20 crore families benefit from ration and financial aid under PMGKY. 'Today, over 10 crore farmers are receiving direct benefit transfers (DBT) every month through the PM-Kisan scheme, and more than 20 crore families are availing ration and financial support under the PMGKY. This is not the tenure of Congress, where if you gave Rs 1, only 15 paise would reach the beneficiary. This is the Modi Government, where if you give Rs 100, the full Rs 100 reaches the beneficiary,' the post further reads. Earlier, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh had accused the Modi government of using technology to block poor and vulnerable people from getting welfare benefits. In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh wrote, 'The Modi government is systematically using technology to deprive the most deprived sections of the country of the rights they receive under social welfare schemes. First, Aadhaar was used as a weapon to exclude crores of workers from MNREGA. Acid attack survivors had to fight in court just to get their names added to Aadhaar. Tribals across the country are still deprived of their ration due to technical glitches. Now, pregnant women have been faced with yet another hurdle face recognition technology (FRT) has now been made mandatory to avail of the basic and legal rights under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).' He alleged that due to technical issues, the number of women receiving help under the PM Matru Vandana Yojana dropped from 96 lakh in 2019-20 to just 27 lakh in 2023-24. 'There is evidence around the world that techniques such as FRT discriminate on the basis of skin colour and class. Earlier, there has been evidence of failure and disruption of technologies such as Aadhaar based payment system (ABPS), National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app. The 365th report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Child, Youth and Sports also mentioned how the implementation of ABPS in the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana disrupted the access of benefits to pregnant and lactating result of this was that the scheme under which 96 lakh women received payment in 2019-20, was reduced to just 27 lakh in 2023-24. 161 Indian nationals arrive in Delhi from Israel under Operation Sindhu: MEA
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): As many as 161 Indian nationals arrived in Delhi from Israel under Operation Sindhu on Tuesday. Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, welcomed them at the airport. Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Israel leg of Operation Sindhu started on June 23. Jaiswal emphasised that the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad remain the government's highest priority. In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, 'The Israel leg of #OperationSindhu began on June 23, 2025, bringing home the first group of 161 Indian nationals from Israel. They safely arrived in New Delhi today at 0820 hrs from Amman, Jordan. At the airport, MoS @PmargrheritaBJP received them. The safety and security of Indian nationals abroad remains the highest priority for the Government.' Amid the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, the Indian Government has launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate from Israel those Indian nationals who wish to leave. MEA stated that their travel from Israel to India would be facilitated by land borders and, thereafter, by air to India. Meanwhile, 292 Indian nationals were evacuated from Iran on a special flight that arrived in New Delhi from Mashhad on Tuesday. In a post on X, Randhir Jaiswal wrote, '292 Indian nationals were evacuated from Iran on a special flight that arrived in New Delhi from Mashhad at 0330 hrs on 24th June.' The conflict between Israel and Iran began on June 13 when the former launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, code-named 'Operation Rising Lion'. In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) initiated a large-scale drone and missile campaign called 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. Tensions escalated further after the US conducted precision airstrikes early Sunday morning on three key Iranian nuclear facilities under 'Operation Midnight Hammer'.
