San Antonio Spurs Predicted to Bring Back Fan-Favorite This Offseason

Yahoo11-05-2025

The San Antonio Spurs have ten players already signed for next season, and most of them (if not all) complement Victor Wembanyama very well, and no one is on a bad contract.
Their biggest needs this offseason will be a Chris Paul replacement, assuming he signs elsewhere, as well as a backup center, which could be found in the draft if the Spurs select Derik Queen or Khaman Maluach.

On a budget deal, the Spurs are predicted to bring back fan-favorite Sandro Mamukelashvili.
"Sandro Mamukelashvili seems most likely to return," wrote Spotrac's Keith Smith. "He's been effective as a backup big, despite inconsistent minutes. Charles Bassey and Bismack Biyombo could come back, but they'd be on veteran minimum deals for frontcourt depth. Same with Jordan McLaughlin in the backcourt. Keep an eye on new two-way deals for Harrison Ingram and Riley Minix. Ingram shot poorly in the G League, but did enough else to get another year. Minix showed a ton of potential before suffering a season-ending injury on January 1."
The Georgian big man averaged only 6.3 points and 3.1 rebounds this season, although he continued to show promise as the season went on and his minutes increased.

In a win over the New York Knicks, he scored 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds, missing only a single shot. After the game, he was joined by personal friend Flavor Flav, much to the delight of fans and his teammates.
The Spurs will continue to use "Mamu" as a backup option behind Wembanyama, although on a low-budget deal, it makes sense to have him as a depth piece. He's made it clear he wants to stay in San Antonio, as well.

Meet the Philadelphia cancer patient being honored before Tuesday's Phillies' game

A Philadelphia cancer patient will be honored at the Phillies' game on Tuesday night. The Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Phillies are joining forces for what they're calling Strike Out Cancer Night. The ceremonial first pitch will come from a young man who's part of a concerning trend. "As a lifelong Phillies fan, you think that you're gonna get to the major leagues by playing," Josh Breen said. "I think that this is a different way of going." As a young cancer patient, Breen will be throwing out the first pitch at the Phillies' Strike Out Cancer Night "Definitely a little bit of pressure," Breen said. In physical therapy now at Fox Chase, Breen knows all about pressure. A year ago, he was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma, a deadly kind of skin cancer. It was right after his wedding. Breen was on his honeymoon in Italy and found a lump. "Very scary at the time," Breen said. "It's supposed to be the best part of your life. And then you kind of quickly get torn down." Breen was only 30 when he was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma, which is part of a new trend of young people being diagnosed with different types of cancer. Josh Breen, who was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma last year, will throw out the first pitch at Tuesday's Phillies' game as a part of Strike Out Cancer Night. CBS News Philadelphia "And many young patients, cancer is not on their radar as it should not be, but suddenly they're presenting with these small lesions that then can turn into bigger problems," Dr. Jeffrey Farma, of Fox Chase Cancer Center, said. Farma, the head of surgery at Fox Chase, said that before his surgery, Breen had immunotherapy, which is changing the face of cancer. "The survival and outcomes is really the best we've ever seen, so really, really exciting," Farma said. And the exciting cancer advancements now come with fertility options. "I was able to bank my sperm a week before I started immunotherapy treatment," Breen said. Breen and his wife, Sam, are expecting a baby boy on July 19. Fox Chase now has a program specifically for young cancer patients to help with everything from fertility to work, school and family issues. "From this moment that our younger patients are in the door, we're providing all of these resources in a combined program, which is amazing," Farma said. Breen said it's been a wild year of highs and lows. Now, it's just about getting his pitch over home plate. "Things are definitely trending in the right direction," Breen said. Breen will no doubt get plenty of applause Tuesday night before the game starts. He said he always uses sunscreen now, which is critical for guarding against skin cancer.

In 2025 offseason, what should the Rockets pay Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams?

In a Houston Rockets offseason preview episode of the Game Theory Podcast, The Athletic's Sam Vecenie makes the case for what new contracts with Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams could look like. Vecenie believes a new VanVleet deal should come in at three years and between $90 and $100 million in total value, while Adams could be at the same length and between $42 and $45 million. Both players are now 31 years old, so a three-season deal could potentially carry each through the remainder of his prime NBA years. 'Adams would basically take up the money you're saving by redoing Fred's deal,' Vecenie says of the combined figures and their impact on the Rockets. The Rockets currently have a team option for VanVleet at $44.9 million for the 2025-26 season, and it has been reported that Houston could look to negotiate a contract extension for more years and at a lower annual value. The upside to VanVleet would be locking in more guaranteed money in total, while the advantage to the Rockets would be lowering his payroll number next season. To Vecenie's point, should VanVleet's 2025-26 annual figure be reduced from $44.9 million to something just above $30 million, that gap would nearly match the starting salary in his proposed Adams deal. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle Adams made $12.6 million this season, and the NBA's non-taxpayer mid-level exception (NT-MLE) this offseason is expected to be in the range of a $14.1-million starting salary. Many teams have access to the NT-MLE, so a contract in that general vicinity would seem realistic, on an annual basis. And from Houston's perspective, it's unlikely they would ask or expect Adams to take a paycut after an elite playoff performance. It's worth noting that VanVleet had a very strong playoff run, as well. However, his larger salary compared to Adams could make it more likely that he takes a paycut, and especially because there aren't many teams with significant salary cap space this offseason. In the absence of external market leverage, that could drive down his annual cost, on a relative basis. By lowering the combined figure of the VanVleet and Adams contracts, that could provide Houston with additional space (relative to the NBA's tax thresholds) to help fill out the rest of its roster. Relative to 2024-25, the Rockets will be a much more expensive team in 2025-26 due to salary increases for fifth-year players Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green — which makes saving money at other spots more of a priority. Teams can exclusively negotiate with their own pending free agents (in this case, VanVleet and Adams) immediately after the conclusion of the 2025 NBA Finals. Then, on June 30, negotiations between free agents and other teams can begin. In a perfect world, the Rockets would reach deals with VanVleet and Adams before that later date. The question will be if everyone is on the same financial page. It has been widely reported that VanVleet and the Rockets want to stick together, and Houston has expressed optimism that Adams wants to return, as well. Because the Rockets are likely to operate above the salary cap, no matter what (due in large part to the raises for Sengun and Green), there isn't much incentive to letting VanVleet and/or Adams leave for another team — since Houston wouldn't have the ability to use anywhere close to that same money to fill those rotation roles. In the aftermath of a 52-30 season with the No. 2 record in the Western Conference, the Rockets are largely operating with a win-now approach. To say the least, VanVleet and Adams are quite helpful to that ambition.

Knicks' coaching change could bring them everything they're chasing

What the Knicks are trying to pull off with their coaching search is not unprecedented, nor is it even particularly uncommon. Four teams in the past 11 years have won an NBA title in the first year of a new coaching regime, and that number grows to seven over the past quarter century. Here is a look at those instances, as the Knicks search for Tom Thibodeau's replacement following a run to the Eastern Conference finals: 2019-20 Lakers Taking over after Luke Walton had posted a .398 winning percentage over the previous three seasons, former Pacers and Magic coach Frank Vogel led the Lakers to the franchise's 17th NBA title in his first year at the helm to conclude the COVID-spurred bubble setup in Orlando, culminated by a six-game knockout of the Heat in the Finals.
