As heavy rain continues to pound the Northeastern region of the country, it has thrown normal life out of gear. Several areas continue to remain inundated on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Indian Air Force (IAF) was roped to assist in the rescue operation of people stranded amid floodwaters. On Sunday morning, a critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission was launched by the IAF in response to a request received from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh administrations. As many as 14 people who were stranded in the middle of flooded Bomjir river in the Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh (cut off from main land) were safely rescued to a safer place. The rescue operation was undertaken by Mi 17 helicopter. Amit Shah Dials CMs, Assures Help Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah dialed chief ministers of several northeastern states and assured them of all possible help in time of distress. Taking to X, Shah wrote, 'Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast. (sic)." Assam CM Issues Advisory Amid Rain Fury Further, in the wake of rain havoc, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday advised people residing in riverside and low-lying areas to remain alert in view of incessant rain in the state and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. Taking to X, Sarma issued the flood alert and said heavy rainfall has been recorded in Arunachal Pradesh's Kibitoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm) and Kalaktang (10 cm), which may cause a sharp rise in river levels downstream. 'Assam is already witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), Hailakandi (30 cm) and in nearby areas. People in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories. Stay safe, stay prepared," Sarma further wrote. Heavy downpour over the past few days has led to flash floods and landslides across several Northeastern states, triggering widespread destruction. So far, the rain fairy has claimed at least 30 lives in Northeast. The downpour has severely affected road connectivity and infrastructure, damaged homes, and disrupted power supply, leaving thousands in distress. First Published:

The capital also received 188.9 mm of rainfall, the highest-ever rainfall recorded in the month of May. This is over 202 per cent more than the normal monthly average of 62.6 mm. In contrast, May 2024 saw just 0.4 mm of rain, which was 99 per cent below average, with not a single rainy day recorded. The unusual weather is being attributed to the early arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai, which has had a ripple effect on weather systems in northern India, including Delhi. However, meteorologists have clarified that the monsoon has not yet arrived in the national Capital, even though conditions have turned significantly cooler and wetter.

Air Force Rescues 14 People Stranded In River On Assam-Arunachal Pradesh Border

Tinsukia: Fourteen people trapped in the swollen Bomjir river on the Assam-Arunachal border were rescued by Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel on Sunday, an official said. Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapneel Paul said the rescue operation was carried out in the morning hours at his request. "In a daring rescue operation, 14 persons trapped in the swollen Bomjir river were rescued by an IAF helicopter," Paul said. "The trapped individuals were stranded due to rising water levels caused by continuous rainfall in the region. The district administration quickly coordinated with the IAF and Arunachal Pradesh officials to execute the rescue plan," he said. Sadiya Revenue Circle Officer Jaydeep Rajak oversaw the operation, which saw 13 people from Tinsukia district and one from Arunachal Pradesh being safely rescued. All the 14 people have been sent back home, the official said. Paul thanked the IAF for timely intervention, ensuring the safe rescue of the stranded people.
