Ten Hag makes successful debut after Bayer Leverkusen wins 4-0 in German Cup

BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. HT Image Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. The game was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Also, Union Berlin routed Gütersloh, another fourth-tier side, 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. Union used dead-ball situations to take a 3-0 halftime lead, with Robert Skov firing in a free kick, and Leopold Querfeld and Danilho Doekhi scoring after corners. Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had to go off early in the second half after indicating he was feeling dizzy. Matheo Raab went on for his Union debut but had little to do as Andrej Ilić scored and then set up Jeong Woo-yeong to complete the rout. ___ AP soccer:

India waits with bated breath as Goa set to play Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in ACL2

Panaji: FC Goa have been drawn in the same group as Cristiano Ronaldo-captained Al-Nassr FC in the AFC Champions League Two, pitting the lowest-ranked side against one with the biggest profile in Asian football's second-tier club competition. Goa qualified for the group stage of ACL2 after a hard-fought win against Oman Professional League champions Al Seeb 2-1 at Fatorda early this week. The victory took the hosts to the main draw — 16 teams each in West and East zones — and they were delighted to have been grouped with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, besides Al Zawraa SC (Iraq) and FC Istiklol (Tajikistan). 'To be on the same field as Ronaldo, my hero, will be a dream,' said winger Brison Fernandes, the club's highest domestic goal-scorer last season. Goa will face Al-Nassr at Fatorda on Oct 22, while the away clash against the Saudi giants has been scheduled for Nov 5 in Riyadh. The Manolo Marquez-coached side will host Iraq Stars League runnersup Al Zawraa SC in the opening group game on Sep 17. The competition also includes Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who were placed in group C, alongside Sepahan SC (Iran), Al Hussein (Jordan) and Ahal FC (Turkmenistan). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like He is our only child, we cannot see him suffer. The Saudi Pro League giants have done even better this season, with marquee summer signings like Joao Felix (Chelsea/AC Milan) and Spanish defender Inigo Martínez from Barcelona FC, while Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich) is expected to follow. Whether Ronaldo shows up with Al-Nassr in India remains to be seen. In last season's AFC Champions League Elite, Ronaldo played just one of the club's five away games. He missed the group-stage clashes against Al-Shorta FC, Iraq (unwell), Esteghlal FC, Iran (muscle fatigue), and Al Sadd SC, Qatar (already qualified) with the club giving varied reasons for his absence. In the pre-quarterfinal clash, the Portugal star did not travel for the away encounter against Esteghlal in Iran. The quarterfinal and semifinal was played at home in Riyadh and Jeddah. Reports in Saudi Arabia have suggested Ronaldo's security team advised him against travelling to some countries for the club's away matches. Fans in India though will hope that Ronaldo boards the chartered flight that will bring the Al-Nassr players to Goa. 'To go from defeating Al Seeb to now being drawn against Al-Nassr that boasts a galaxy of stars like Cristiano, Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, Inigo Martinez, it's a moment that defines everything we have worked for at FC Goa,' said CEO Ravi Puskur. 'For over a decade, we have dreamt of Goan football standing tall on the biggest stages, and today, that dream is real. This isn't just about the club; it's about every player, every staff member, and every fan who has believed in us. ' Until last week, Goa were unsure of its future, given that there is no clarity on when this season's ISL, India's top-tier football league, will kick off. Six clubs are yet to start pre-season training; three have told their players and officials that their salaries are being kept on hold. We are ready to put Goan and Indian football on the global map, and we can't wait for football lovers in India to collectively join us on this historic journey,' said Puskur. The six group stage games are scheduled to be played between Sep 15 and Dec 24, before moving into the Round of 16 from Feb 10-19 next year. How Emiliano Martinez and Ronaldinho helped in convincing Messi to travel to India in December

Argentina's World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had arrived in Kolkata about seven months after he won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and three months later Ronaldinho came calling. The exhibition tour of the two players was a big hit. Before they left, Satadru Dutta, the man who convinced the two footballers to make the trip to Kolkata, requested them to put in a good word with Argentina football icon Lionel Messi. Messi is a longtime teammate of Martinez at the international level. Ronaldinho was Barcelona's talisman when Messi had made his debut with Spanish giants in 2004 at the age of 17. Messi is now on board. He is set to kick off his four-city tour in Kolkata on December 12. From Kolkata he will be in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. Dutta, who has played a role in bringing the likes of Pele and Maradona to Kolkata, is excited. 'The football world is a small circle,' Dutta tells The Indian Express. 'When I got Emi Martinez and Ronaldinho to Kolkata, I told them that I am trying to bring Messi to India and your review will matter. If you can give a good review to his team and even Messi himself, it will help. Touchwood, I executed it in a neat and clean way, they gave a very good review to Messi,' Dutta said. What followed was a chat with Messi's father and agent, Jorge, in July last year in Miami, USA, where the Argentina captain currently plays for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS). While Messi senior told Dutta that he likes the idea, it wasn't going to be possible to do it in 2024. 'I just said if it would be possible over the next one or two years, he said 'I love the idea',' Dutta said. The visit this year won't be Messi's first trip to India. That was made in 2011, when he played a friendly against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. That also happened to be Messi's first match as Argentina captain. When Dutta met Messi in February this year, he showed him clips from that match, and photos of a 75-foot statue of Messi lifting the World Cup, which he had erected in a Durga Pooja pandal that Ronaldinho inaugurated in 2023. 'He was touched by that,' Dutta said. A multiple-city tour was the only way enough sponsors would come on board to make Messi's trip feasible for the organisers. 'If it is not multiple cities, it won't be financially viable,' Dutta said. After landing in Kolkata on December 12,the next day Messi will attend the unveiling of a statue of his followed by a 'GOAT Concert' and 'GOAT Cup', the venue of which is yet to be decided. The GOAT Cup will be a celebratory seven-a-side soft-touch football match, with Messi teaming up alongside Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham and Bhaichung Bhutia. Tickets are likely to start at Rs 3,500 and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to felicitate Messi during the programme. This will be followed by a flight to Ahmedabad on the evening of December 13, where Dutta says Messi will be attending a private event with some of his sponsors. Messi then moves to Mumbai on December 14. Messi will be in Delhi on December 15, where he will have another GOAT Concert at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Dutta also said that Messi will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'We will seek an appointment from the Prime Minister,' Dutta said.
