Urukonda temple priest ends life, alleges harassment
In a heart-wrenching suicide note, Poojanna accused temple executive officer (EO) Vijayaraju, chief priest JErappa, and Vedic scholar Mohan Sharma of relentless harassment and humiliation, driving him to this extreme step.
Poojanna Swamy, a hereditary priest from Urukunda, had served at the temple since 2002 and was promoted to deputy chief priest three years ago. His family's deep spiritual connection to the temple traces back to their ancestral land, where the deity is believed to have been installed. Demonstrating his devotion, Poojanna donated a four-room building worth Rs 50 lakh to the temple.
On Saturday night, he retired to bed as usual but was found dead by his family in an upper room of his residence on Sunday morning. In his alleged suicide note, Poojanna alleged that EO Vijayaraju enabled the chief priest and Vedic scholar to exert unchecked authority over fellow priests, undermining the dignity of hereditary priests.
He claimed CCTV cameras were installed in the sanctum sanctorum with malicious intent and decried the growing intolerance and power politics within the temple, stating that the EO's support of the duo left no room for justice, plunging him into deep mental distress.
Poojanna is survived by wife, daughters and a son.The Hans India repeatedly attempted to contact EO Vijayaraju for comment, but he did not respond to calls.

Court-martial: Colonel sentenced to 6 years of RI for corruption, cashiered
A Colonel of the Army Service Corps (ASC), who had commanded a battalion in Ladakh, has been sentenced to six years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and cashiered (dishonourable dismissal from service) after he was found guilty of corruption by a Summary General Court Martial (SGCM) here in Chandigarh. Colonel Vikas Pandey, who commanded the 503 ASC Battalion under the 3 Infantry Division in Ladakh, was found guilty of all seven charges of fraud and corruption the SGCM levelled against him. The trial, presided over by a Brigadier with three Colonels as members, began on February 16 and concluded late at night on August 16 at N Area in Chandigarh. Army sources said the officer had been nominated for the prestigious Higher Command course when 'a pseudo-anonymous complaint was made against him about financial irregularities'. After conducting a Court of Inquiry and Summary of Evidence, it was decided to try him by a court-martial with one charge under Section 52 (f) of the Army Act (intent to defraud) and six charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. While serving as the Commanding Officer of the ASC Battalion, Colonel Pandey, with intent to defraud, opened, operated and closed institutional bank account in the name of 'Regimental Fund Account' at YES Bank's Leh Branch, with account type as 'Defence' by signing and using his appointment stamp and Battalion's round stamp, it was alleged. It was also alleged that, being a public servant, he 'intentionally enriched himself illicitly' during the period of his office as the Commanding Officer of the 503 Army Service Corps Battalion between August 10, 2020 and September 20, 2021, by receiving a sum of Rs 63,66,096 in YES Bank, Leh Branch. According to sources, the Commanding Officer was also accused of receiving Rs 4 lakh while serving in Ladakh, while a third charge alleged that he illicitly purchased a flat in Jaipur in the name of his wife and made the full payment of Rs 32,60,000 — 'disproportionate to his known sources of income'. The Army also accused the Colonel of illicitly purchasing a BMW car in the name of his wife, and making the full payment of Rs 48,48,258 — 'disproportionate to his known sources of income'. Two more charges relating to receiving Rs 21 lakh in cash illegally during his tenure as the Commanding Officer were also levelled against him, sources said. The SGCM found him guilty of all these charges. The sentence to the officer is subject to confirmation by the higher Army authorities. Earlier, the Commanding Officer had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which observed that his sentence would be subject to the disposal of a petition filed by him in the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT).

CB to take two more accused on remand
CUTTACK: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police will take Sanatana Bisoi, president of ex-cadre teachers' association of Koraput district and Ramjee Prasad Gupta, a businessman of Cuttack's Badambadi locality on remand in the second phase for interrogation in connection with the Special OTET question paper leak case. Sources said the Crime Branch had prayed the JMFC-3 court for a two-day remand of the duo on August 21 and 22 but the court allowed their remand for one day on August 21. The agency will grill Bisoi and Gupta to elicit more information on the sale of the leaked question papers and to ascertain the money trail. Earlier, the officials of the investigating agency had taken BSE's data entry operator Jitan Moharana and working president of state ex-cadre teachers' association Bijaya Mishra on two-day remand. During interrogation, both had confessed to their role in the question paper leak. In his statement, Moharana had revealed that he obtained the question papers from the laptop of the BSE vice-president using a pen drive well before the examination. He printed hard copies from a printer, placed the pen drive and the papers in an envelope, and drove to Nayagarh, where he handed it to Mishra's brother. Subsequently, Mishra transferred Rs 2.5 lakh to Moharana's bank account via UPI. The leaked papers were later sent to Ambodala in Rayagada, where accused Prasant Kumar Khamari, a teacher at government upper primary school at Bhejipadar in Bhawanipatna, translated them using Google Translate and rewrote them by hand to cover up the leak.
